Wouldn't you have just loved to have heard them play?  I bet they had a grand time.

My grandpa, Jim Hawkins, and great uncle, Clarence Garrett, both played in the Heater Band.  I may have a photo of the group to share, but I'll have to look for it.  I have heard lots of stories about the fun times they had.  They played for a lot of social gatherings at that time, and were very serious about their music as well as enjoying the fellowship of being in the band with other close relatives and friends.  .

Does anyone have a picture of the Band from Howard.  I can't think of the name of it, buy my great uncle Turner was in it.  It would have been turn of the century I believe.

Patyrn, Fred and I have very fond memories of your Grandpa Jim Hawkins.    In 1951 he and Mary owned the old Howard Golf Course, and Fred and I were as poor as any church mouse you could imagine -- and Jim asked us if we would like to move out there and live and the rent would only be $10.00 a month.  Wellll  we were absolutely delighted, so of course we did.  That is the first time we had any home furnishings of our own...as we had lived in apartments in Howard, rented  first from Dallas & Audry Roberts - 2 rooms upstairs - no water, ( had to share the bathroom downstairs ) no REAL fruniture - only 2 chairs, a bed and 1 small dresser, a hot plate and orange crates for dish storage and a slab for a table, and had to pay $35.00 a month  then after several month had a chance to rent the west upstairs 2 rooms WITH A BATH from Mr. and Mrs. Rube Criger for $40.00 a month.  Then along came our angels Jim and Mary.  They were so very very good to us, and Mary gave me a Queen Anne sewing rocker when our Teresa was born.  She said, "Every new Mama needs a rocker to rock her baby to sleep."  It belonged to her Mother and it is sitting in Teresa's home this day.  One day Jim and Mary were out at the farm and Fred's Dad had given Fred some Home Brew.  Fred asked Jim if he wanted a bottle, and they sat down and drank some together and when they were finished, Jim said, "I'll tell you, Freddie, this is squirrel whiskey -- it will make you climb trees and talk nutty"  To this day --- Fred still uses that expression .
Oh---- We surely loved Jim and Mary Hawkins!!!
IT'S NOT WHAT YOU GATHER, BUT WHAT YOU SCATTER....
THAT TELLS WHAT KIND OF LIFE YOU HAVE LIVED!
