You might have heard that Barack Obama's mother was born in Wichita, Kansas. He also traces some of his ancestors to Howard County, Kansas.

Harbin and Elizabeth McCurry arrived in Howard County sometime before the 1875 state census and stayed until sometime after the 1880 federal census. I did not trace it through to determine the exact relationship.

They lived in Salt Creek Township, which is now part of Chautauqua County.

"If one of the many corrupt...county-seat contests must be taken by way of illustration, the choice of Howard County, Kansas, is ideal." Dr. Everett Dick, The Sod-House Frontier, 1854-1890.
"One of the most expensive county-seat wars in terms of time and money lost..." Dr. Homer E Socolofsky, KSU

I done some surfing and the closest I can come up without having to do some old-fashioned research with documentation is this:

(Direct line generations)
1.  Harbin W. McCurry  -lived in Chautauqua County, Ks   and died in Oklahoma
2.  Thomas Creekmore McCurry --listed in the 1880 Federal census as living in Elk County, KS and died 1939 at Peru, Ks.
3.  Leona McCurry b. abt. 1897 in KS and  married Rolla C. Payne
4.  Madelyn Payne b. 1922 married Stanley Dunham
5.  Shirley "Ann" Dunham b. 1942 and d. 1995, she married Barack Obama Sr. (Divorced when Jr. was
     abt. 2 years old)
6.  Barack Obama, Jr.

Samuel McCurry, who was a brother to Thomas Creekmore McCurry, was the one that lived in the Longton/Oak Valley area and is supposedly buried in the Oak Valley cemetery.

This is the only way I know how to explain it.

I went home and looked at the listing for the Oak Valley Cemetery that I got from the court house. It lists the following McCurry's:

Ethel M. dau. of S.P. and M.M. May 7, 1893 - August 5, 1894 Row 4-W-S
Martha M. (Mother) November 16, 1861-February 18, 1925 4-W-S
Ada 1900-1987 4-W-S (a sister to Ethel?)
Maybe Thomas is buried there too with no stone?

It was my understanding that Thomas was probably buried in the Peru (Chautauqua Co), Ks cemetery and Samuel was in the Oak Valley, KS cemetery.  Sure would be nice if all the cemeteries of Elk County were recently read and put online.  But I know that takes lots of time, effort to say the least.  I'm doing what I can through this forum and on the  www.findagrave.com website.

OOPS, I meant Samuel. Thus the S.P. I think this is going to be a week of Mondays.......
