Joan Louise Baughman was born July 31, 1928 in Enterprise, Kansas to Emmett and Rose (Barnett) Poister.  She passed away on January 4, 2019 in Colby, Kansas.

Joan was baptized on April 1, 1934 at the Enterprise Methodist Church which her family attended.  She played violin in the high school orchestra and graduated from Enterprise High School in 1946 after which she taught first grade in Holland and then Enterprise.  She taught two more years in Woodbine, Kansas where she met teacher, Loyd Baughman.  On December 27, 1949, she and Loyd were married in the Enterprise Methodist Church.  They lived in Woodbine, Kansas, first boarding and then moving to a small trailer.

In 1959, Loyd and Joan brought their family to Longton, Kansas where Loyd took over operation of the Baughman Angus Ranch.  Joan raised the four children and guided their formative years.  The family spent many weekends moving cattle and enjoyed participating in the Grand Entry for the Elk County Rodeo.  Joan accompanied Longton/Elk Valley school choirs, was a 4-H leader, and served on the Elk County Extension Council.  She gave piano lessons to dozens of students through the years.

Joan was a member of the Methodist Church in Longton, United Methodist Women, and attended District Conferences.  She was organist for the church and played for numerous weddings and funerals.  Loyd and Joan traveled to National Association of Postmasters of the United States conventions throughout the nation.  Because Loyd had served in the Army Air Corps during World War II, Julys found them at Oshkosh, Wisconsin enjoying Experimental Aircraft Association airshows and seminars.

Joan enjoyed traveling throughout the United States and the world.  She and the family went on camping trips to Roaring River in Missouri with Longton friends.  She attended numerous Extension Homemaker Unit conventions and traveled to Europe with adult friends.  When Joan's children traveled or had special events, she got involved.  She attended many birthday and graduation celebrations for grandchildren and enjoyed visiting Tahiti, Spain, Australia, New Zealand, and Kenya.  She and Loyd enjoyed attending Independence Community College sports events.  She took a genealogy class at ICC and found some interesting leads on Poister and Baughman lineage.

Joan and Loyd moved to assisted living in Colby, Kansas in 2012.  She maintained her interest in reading, and despite some dementia, she enjoyed conversing and reminiscing.

Survivors include her four children, Janice (Bruce) Frahm of Colby, Kansas, Gary Baughman of Hugoton, Kansas, Charles (Margaret Froelich) Baughman of Dodge City, Kansas, and Kenton (Marcia Dowell) Baughman of Lincoln, Nebraska; a sister, Carol (Gary) Williams of Hayden, Colorado with her children, Don, David, Dale, and Denise Menges; sister-in-law, Nadine Poister of Butler, Missouri; six grandchildren, Jon (Teay Jindrat) Frahm of Thailand, Duane Baughman of Manhattan, Kansas, Ethan (Christie Buseman) Baughman of Thousand Oaks, California, Kendra (Jonny) Piening of Lincoln, Nebraska, Christine (Bobby) Truhe of Lincoln, Nebraska, and Karlyn Frahm of Colby, Kansas; and seven great-grandchildren, Evelyn and James Baughman, Joshua and Vivian Piening, Sophie and Rhett Truhe, and Aliyah Frahm.  Joan was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Loyd Baughman; her brother, Lyle Poister; and her brother-in-law, LeRoy Menges.

A memorial service was held at the Longton United Methodist Church on March 24, 2019.  Memorial contributions may be made to the Longton United Methodist Church in Longton, Kansas.  Services were under the direction of Weeks Family Funeral Home of Sublette, Kansas.
