Maxine Thorne was born in Severy, Kansas on July 15, 1941 to John and Margaret Allison.  She grew up in the Howard, Kansas area, graduating from Howard High School in 1959.

Maxine Thorne would live a life whose theme was "others".  When she was ten years old, she asked Jesus to come into her heart.  She was married to Dwight "Shorty" Thorne in Howard, Kansas on July 15, 1962.  In the years that followed, she gave birth to five sons, John, Jeff, Jim, Jerome "Tony", and Jay.  The family moved to Independence, Kansas in late 1970.  In December of 1981, Maxine graduated as a Registered Nurse from the nursing program at Labette County Community College in Parsons, Kansas and began her life's calling to serve those in need.  She served in various nursing positions in and around Independence before becoming a nursing home inspector for the state of Kansas.  She retired from the state in 2010.

In the summer of 2011, Maxine and Shorty moved to Covington, Georgia and began attending Eastside Baptist Church.  Whether administering medication to children on an Indian reservation in Nebraska, attending to the wounds of the injured deep in the rainforest of Liberia, Africa, or delivering groceries to the needy in Stockbridge, Georgia, Maxine Thorne gave herself tirelessly and unselfishly to others.  The more desperate a situation, the more passionately Maxine worked to fill the need.

While she gave of herself diligently to those in need, her most fervent energy was given to her family.  She was the rock of her family of five boys whom she raised to become generous and hard-working men.  To her daughters-in-law, she was loving and supportive.  Her grandchildren knew Grammie as a "miracle worker!"  Her healing touch could make everything better.

Maxine is survived by her husband, Dwight "Shorty" Thorne of Covington, Georgia; her brother, Virl Allison of Wichita, Kansas; her sons, John and Darlene Thorne of Southaven, Mississippi, Jeff and Lori Thorne of Lansing, Kansas, Jim and Michelle Thorne of Covington, Georgia, Tony Thorne of Stone Mountain, Georgia, and Jay Thorne of Porterdale, Georgia; her grandchildren, Timothy Thorne of Bartlesville, Oklahoma, Nicole Heg of Huntsville, Alabama, Joe Campbell of Southaven, Mississippi, Jacquline Hoorfar of Kansas City, Missouri, Danielle Golon of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Alex Thorne, Brianna Thorne, and Satie Brunk of Lee's Summit, Missouri, Thaddeus Thorne of Lansing, Kansas, Jostan, Jacey, Jasmine, and Jamie Thorne of Covington, Georgia, J.T. Thomas of New Orleans, Louisiana, and Keygan, Kelynn, and Karis Thorne of Porterdale, Georgia; great-grandsons, Cody Campbell and Arik Hoorfar; along with numerous nieces and nephews.  She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Margaret Allison and two brothers, Carl Allison and Ray Allison.

The life of Maxine Thorne has directly touched folks from Kansas, Nebraska, Texas, Kentucky, Peru, Mexico, Liberia, and Georgia.  Only eternity will reveal her influence for the Kingdom of God during her time on Earth.  May the generosity, compassion, and labor of love found in the life of Maxine Thorne inspire us all to give to others in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.

A graveside service will be held on Saturday, June 3, 2017 at Grace Lawn Cemetery in Howard, Kansas.
