Howard Marshall Bushman, attorney and longtime resident of McLean, Virginia, passed away on May 28, 2016 at the age of 70.  He was born June 19, 1945 in St. Louis, Missouri to Leonard and Tama Bushman.

Howard graduated from Murray State University and from the University of Missouri-Columbia Law School.  Following graduation from law school in 1970, he served in the United States Army within the Judge Advocate General's Corps at Fort Riley, Kansas and at the Pentagon in Washington, D.C.  He was committed to the U.S. Army, remaining in the Army Reserve until his retirement as a Lieutenant Colonel in 2005.  He continued to serve in his commitment to the Army by providing gratuitous advice to soldiers, their families, and veterans on legal matters and family challenges.  He did this without fanfare or promotion but with sincerity as to what might be in their best interest.

As an attorney, Howard furnished sound legal advice and counsel to 10 former Chief of Staffs of the Army, several U.S. Supreme Court justices, and one Secretary of State.  He was a licensed attorney in the Commonwealth of Virginia, State of Missouri, Circuit Court of Appeals, U.S. Court for Military Appeals, U.S. Tax Court, and U.S. Court of Claims.  In addition, he served on the Board of Directors of Potomac Bank of Virginia.  Following Potomac Bank's acquisition by Sandy Spring Bank in 2007, he served as a member of Sandy Spring's Northern  Virginia Advisory Board until his death.

An avid sports fan, Howard was a lifelong fan of the St. Louis Cardinals.  He always enjoyed taking in a game, no matter the sport and maintained season tickets for the hometown Washington Redskins and Nationals. He had been a little league coach and former President of the McLean High School Booster Club. He was secretary of the Army Historical Foundation and remained active with the Association of the United States Army, Military Order of the Carabao, and Knollwood Military Retirement Community.  He was a member of the Kemper-Macon Ware Masonic Lodge #64 and Temple Rodef Shalom.  In his free time, he enjoyed Nationals baseball games, cigars, and the view from the condo deck in Colonial Beach, Virginia.

Howard is survived by his mother, Mrs. Tama Bushman of St. Louis, Missouri; his wife, Betty J. (Heater) Bushman of McLean, Virginia; his four children, LTC John M. Bushman of Alexandria, Virginia, Jeff L. Bushman of San Diego, California, Sarah E. Bushman of Arlington, Virginia, and Joshua E. Bushman of Alexandria, Virginia; his grandson, Jay V. Bushman of McLean, Virginia; and two sisters, Gloria Schwartz and Wendy Wax, both of Chesterfield, Missouri.
