Christmas Past

Which Christmas in your past do you seem to remember the most?  For whatever reason.

At my age there have been so many Christmases from so long ago, it is hard to choose just one.  Perhaps I should choose one that I don't remember.   In December of 1930 my father's construction job was completed.  The next one wouldn't start until after Christmas and in a location a hundred miles away.  So my parents packed their belongings in Daddy's dump truck and with my sister and brother between them in the cab and me in Mother's arms, they proceeded to go to Grandpa's farm.  Grandma and Grandpa had a big house with plenty of room for a family with small children.  Only the four youngest children were still at home.  Mother and Daddy both were welcome help on the farm.

Unfortunately, Daddy's truck broke down before the trip was completed.  Somehow word was gotten to Grandpa and one of Mother's brothers was sent to the rescue.  He arrived in Grandpa's farm truck and we were all tucked in for the remainder of the trip.  Now for the memorable part.

Grandma had a real tree with real candles and they were lit.  Remember this was 1930 and there was no rural electricity, so the only lights on a tree were real lights.  My sister doesn't remember much more of that Christmas.  Just the real lit candles on a beautiful tree.  I imagine it was quite a sight for a hungry, tired five year old.  I am sure that I saw it, too.  I wish I could remember it.

Now I have shared mine.  Won't you share yours?

PS.  Jo writes so beautifully, I hope she will share a story with us.
