Amelia Nowlin was born in Darke county, Ohio, February 10, 1834, and died in Elk Falls, Kansas, January 26, 1911, age almost 77 years.

She was married to Joseph Root in the spring of 1886.  To this union were born two sons, Phares and William.  At the time of her burial, neither sons nor husband were able to be present because of illness.

The family came to Elk Falls in 1871 and this has been their home ever since.

She united with the United Brethren church in early life and was ever known as an earnest christian woman, one whose life was made up  of kind ministries to those with whom she mingled.  The funeral took place in the M. B. church at 10 a.m., January 28, where a goodly number of friends of the family met to pay this tribute of respect to her memory.  The casket containing the loved form was lowered to its final resting place in Elk Falls cemetery to await the Resurrection morning.
