Not to mention itchy too. In my case it's got to be almost 45 years since I helped on my girlfriend's family's farm.

Both of them get mighty messy......but, I will take the hay anytime. I most of the time drove the truck and the guys rode up top and then back at the barn I helped load the elevator. Messy, but I loved it. Nasty in the heat, too.

We had a pulley and rope but it wasn't a huge barn either.

The level of discomfort of exertion can be summed up with the following equation:

D = T x (Y squarred)  Where D is level of discomfort, T is temperature in degrees F, and Y is number of years since you last hauled square bales of hay during July or August.

My brother and I "upended" the square bales in the field so the guys could hook 'em and pull them into the back of the truck. When I was 13, I graduated to driving the truck. So that would have been about 35 years ago....
