They don't do Thanksgiving dinner at the High School anymore???  When did it stop???  I loved to do dinner there because it was less work and the food was always wonderful.

Hey guys I guess I did miss it.  Sorry about that.  But thanks to you all for the birthday wishes.  It wasn't the best birthday but your notes have made my day.

The Good Old Days / Re: Elk County Airport

Waldo, My ex-father-in-law Ralph Roggow kept his Cessna there for some time from the late 90's till around '04 or so before he and JoAnn moved back to South Dakota.  I can't say for certain if he still has it or not but he stored it in the hanger there on the west side of the runway.  I took my kids out there numerous times while we still lived in Howard.  Only ever saw 1 other plane other than his there in the years that we lived there though.

The Coffee Shop / Re: Let it Snow

I remember going to CO (Royal Gorge) one year when I was a kid and it snowed in June.  It think around 75, 76, or 77.  I cant remember the exact year but it sure was unexpected.  We didnt have the proper clothing, thought it would be much warmer.

The Coffee Shop / Re: Earthquakes/Volcanoes

Wilma, I just watched a show on the History Channel about this very topic.  It is a very hotly contested subject between scientists as whether volcanos cause earthquakes or vice versa.  But history has proved, at least in the case of Mount Vesuvius in Italy, that every eruption over the past thousand years was preceded by an earthquake.  They said it has a unique history of inhabitation around the vocano for over a thousand years so there is excellent documentation of eruptions.  So they are currently monitoring the area for earthquake activity again to see if it triggers another eruption.  Scientists are saying that it may not happen within a few days or a few weeks but a few months.  But in the frame of time, even a few months is a short period of time.  In the least it is a very interesting topic.

Angie,
As you may know I grew up in New Orleans.  Growing up I always said there would be no way I would ever live someplace without all the conveniences of a big city.  That was till I moved to Howard.  Life was moving at a different pace.  I found I didn't need all the trappings of the city, but maybe for a visit to Indy or Wichita once a month.  I liked waking up and being able to look out the front window and see deer in the front yard in the am.  Or going to bed at night and hearing the coyote howl at night.  I loved that my kids were safe and could go anywhere in town on their bikes.  I truly miss Howard and its wonderfull people.  My favorite was the Halloween traditions.  I tell people about it all the time.
I live in a smaller town now but it just isnt the same.  Like some of the other responses, I live where I do now mainly because I have to, although I did choose the little town i lived in because it was far enough away from the big city to still have that small town feel.
Maybe somday when I retire I may just have to move back to KS and live out the rest of my days in the one place I felt I could truly call home.
