The Coffee Shop / Winter Coming...
September 29, 2008, 12:06:33 AM
Is everyone ready for the rise in gas pricing.  Every year the city lowers the rate in the spring and then raises it in the winter. Here is an Idea, wow Im good at this.  Change gas service to a public company, rather than a private one and well get a better deal, we could probable save $3 or $4 a unit, or $50 or $60 a month.  Havent we learned yet the things those private companies do like leahman brothers, and bear stearns is wrong.  Why does the city need to rape the people in town making an honest living, they already rape the ones in the process of dying.  What doesn their bank account look like with the funeral home funds?

YES, I think there are "children at play" signs that you can buy and post.  I see them around different areas, and also in towns.  You might want to ask the county, but I think you can buy them somewhere if they don't have any.

Why would you want the city to waste their, I mean our taxes dollars on signs. Park at any intersection in town, and count how many cars go through it some like its not even there. The County would be the richest in the state if the local law wrote tickets everytime it happened, The county could multiply the funds available 10 fold in the first month alone.

You might have grown up on gravel roads but not Elk County gravel.  We have some of the hardest rock in the nation.   This is why there are federal and state spec quarries on all sides of the county.  The rock is harder, sharper and more plentiful than is the high plains or swamp.    Flint already told you about the crappie rock crusher harshness makes gravel from is a  cheap layer of $7 a ton stuff.

Buy a bigger vehicle with larger tires that have more tread on the ground.  I ran, used to, run trashhauler recaps that are 14 ply tires, worked really well and have no problems with the rock.

The faster you drive the less time you spend on the road.  Just put the petal on the right down a foot or two and you will get to your destination before the tires go flat.  Quit buying cheap tires.   I drive 90% of the roads in Elk County and rarely have a flat..... that Bill can't fix.   Besides tires are cheap.   What's a few hundred dollars compared to the hundreds of thousands that we spend each year graveling the ditches.

Greenwood county spends more on tires than our entire gravel budget.  That would be like comparing a Yugo to a Freightliner.   Larger county, more population, better road crews, and they have their own sets of problems.  I have been on some pretty poor GW county roads.

If the rancher is paying taxes just like any other land owner why should the road be closed so the trip to the cattle is four miles farther?  If you start closing roads you loose your federal and state cost share per mile of road.  Yes, it is stupid to spend so much time on untraveled roads but look how bad they can screw up the ones that are heavily traveled.

I think the new management will either fix or at least identify the maintenance problem.  He has been on the job less than a month.  Give him a chance to screw up before waxing with broad strokes.

Never had a problem with bf goodrich oem tires

if you drive less than 40 miles a day, its also gonna cost $50,000, Id rather have a corvette for that, but I cant afford it, and who can besides the 4 families that own Elk County

Trying to get interest in cleaning up Elk County is like pushing a log chain.  Every one thinks the chain needs to be pushed but there is no one who is willing to pull it along.  The worst offenders of trashed, abandoned, neglected property are the most hard to get a finger on.  Why is pride so hard when you have property setting around is the worlds view?  If your stock is in the toilet, your land is your best asset.  If your neighbor cleans up their yard your valuation goes up?  If you paint your house you are automatically put in the next higher tax bracket?

It must be environmental, the weed eater fumes might be carcinogenic.  Snapper exhaust kills mosquitoes.  My hummingbirds need food.  There is a noise ordinance so I can't run my lawnmower.  The goats won't eat the grass untill all the brush is scrubbed down.

I just don't have time.

Image.                  If you display good positive aspects to the area then hopefully others will be attracted to the county.

If you portray a bad neglected image you will get ignored.

There are 24 hours in a day.   Turn off the TV, log off, and go mow the yard.

I challenge anyone to mow their yard and one other before the first of October.

It is called stewardship.  Pick up some trash on your walk.   See a big boulder in the middle of the road stop and save someone from a slashed tire.   If your lawnmower is already started it takes no time to mow just one more swipe down the road ditch.  It will save in the long run.

Its not too environmental, look next to the museum, and look at the big oil spot on the street from the old kerosene tractor running there during the parade, Everyone is so concerned about environment, for the livestock sake, We burn fields, thats pollution, leaf burning is some of the most toxic pollution there is. Every car in Elk county leaks oil, Why dont we oil the dirt roads to keep dust down.

how the air conditioner hot tub working out for you pepelect.

"If you portray a bad neglected image you will get ignored." I have to disagree, Cookson neglected his school, and he got alot of attention, the lions club even cleaned it up for him.

On the other hand, take a ride east on Randolph, All the neglected house on both sides ready to fall down, those are being ignored.

And how do we clean up the 4 Junk stores in town, when did that one burn down....

The Coffee Shop / Re: If I Had Unlimited Funds

If I had unlimited funds, I would take Wabash apart brick by brick, sort of like the london bridge, and put it back together on the highway, so the business owners can prosper from a state highway that runs through town, like anyother town in the state, I would like to shoot the person that said "lets reroute the highway away from the down town area"

Good job Bluestem football you are out of the gutter.  WE held that distinction in the past.   WE has a better athletic program now but I  haven't seen a Rhode Scholar yet.

But I think that WE should and does cater to the regular old stupid kid.   We have a special education budget that is  60% of the entire school.   Still we have made improvement and NCLB benchmarks.   But what happens next year.  If you have good students, good scores, and good teachers, then what do you do to improve?  It is call Annual Yearly Progress.  If you are not meeting AYP you can lose your funding.  Less stupid than last year gets funding.  Good but not better gets the shaft.

The system is not set up to reward teaching the most inovative or out side the box type of structure.  If you could get more funding more programs would be created.  But this is the real world, I am constantly reminded on other channels, if you send 1/4 of you students out of district than 1/4 of your funding goes with them.

Why are we not stealing students from other districts?   What is so wrong with our system that is driving away our Patriots?
Couldn't we grab a couple of cubs before they become Lions?
If we took a couple of small devils they would not become so sad.

This system has many flaws, its run like your typical run of the mill government.

Lets go back....

School district Superintendent and higherarchy got raises, Special teachers get $15,000 raises

WE cant settle teachers contract because of lack of funds, and hey they dont want to raise taxes.

City wants to raise taxes $200,000 to tear down someones

Now lets think about this, City wants to raise taxes to tear down wealthy citizens property so they dont have to, but WE cant raise taxes to increase the standard of living for teacher.  GEE why would anyone want to move here to be a teacher

4 Teachers quit, cant find new ones to late in the year and pay sucks, 1000 jobs in kansas teaching system.  anyone know the website.

Rearrange school idea,

Does anyone know what the school higherarchy is getting paid? We know what public officials make, what senators make, what people working minimum wage jobs make, what teachers make, why dont we know was they make?????

Bussing system is horrible. Kids have to get on 2 hours before school because they live 10 minutes away.  (scratching head) this doesnt make sense.

"Why do we only hear about the windows being broken out, stores being vandalized, mail boxes smashed, and score of the ballgames?  "
Because WEST ELK & ELK COUNTY REVOLVE AROUND SPORTS. TO ANYONE NEW HERE WE DO NOT PUNISH ATHLETES. THEY CAN BREAK OUT WINDOWS, VANDALIZE STORES, PLAY MAILBOX BASEBALL, LEAVE THEIR ALCOHOL BOTTLES WHERE EVER THEY LIKE, PARTY AT THE BRIDGES OUTSIDE OF TOWN, PLAY THEIR LOUD THUMPING MUSIC, NOT WORK BECAUSE THEIR PARENTS PAY FOR ANYTHING THEY NEED, NOT TAKE TESTS, DONT DO HOMEWORK, SKIP SCHOOL WHENEVER THEY WANT, HAVE KIDS OF THEIR OWN IN HIGH SCHOOL, DROP OUT AND STILL PLAY SPORTS OR JUST SAY THE KIDS ARENT THEIRS, THE GIRL IS A LIAR,

If we want to promote the area for adults to move here all we need do is make a commercial, kind of like the one on tv for that other city with the really good schools, drawing a blank

Alright, Commercial.

We Can show the kids doing all the activities above, and then a football game, and say "Elk county has the best school system in the state of KS because we pass the kids as long as they bring home championships, then show the track team.

and for funding if we take 1/4 of student out of the system and send them to, lets say longton, then that funding goes with them.  Hey heres an Idea, knew my name meant something, This isnt wichita you dont have a choice where you go to school, You live in howard you go to West elk, You live in Severy you go to west elk, you live in moline you go to west elk, There shouldnt be a choice, if you live in the northern half of howard and north you go to severy e, the southern half and south go to moline e.  This would solve a huge problem with the busing i Mentioned before, because kids have to be bussed from near severy all the way to moline e. because their babysiitter is in moline.

Another Idea, hang on hear me out.  Im not a rocket scientist, I probably couldve work on the atomic bomb, with Ideas like this.
Cut The School day week to 4 days, Think about how much money this would save.
One less day heating or cooling school to compfortable level, One less day filling buses up, One less day paying busdrivers, para's, secretaries, cooks, cleaners, janitors. All the money saved, you could pay teachers more which in turn would draw more teachers here for jobs, better teachers, better schools, New residents moving here paying more taxes, new business better road surfaces, tourists.

But then again, Why would we want to do it someone might have to work....

This subject should be change to "Elk County Should"

I see alot of discussion about the roads.  Here is an "IDEA"

County Cant afford to fix roads.

Sherrif writes tickets

People pay tickets

County Can afford to fix roads

But then on the other hand if the sherriff rights tickets He wont be elected again, cause he did his job.
