The Coffee Shop / Re: How Do You Feel About Snakes????
October 13, 2008, 08:45:59 PM
When I was growing up in Southwestern Kansas, my parents did not have a septic tank we had a sess pool (spelling wrong). Huge black snakes would get into the pool and make their way through our sewer pipe into our toilets.  We ALWAYS kept the toilet seat down and a hoe beside the toilet to drag out the smelly slimy things.  When we had guests use the RR, they got a big surpise if they did not turn on the light at night and LOOK before having a rest. It did not take long before Dad dug a septic tank and the problem was solved.   ;D

When we moved out here to the farm 22+ years ago, nobody lived out here for about 7 years.  I had copperheads and rattlesnakes in my yard.  #1 thing we did is poured a cement top over our rock well.  Copperheads loved the cool dampness and would thrive by our well.   #2 I kept my grass mowed short and had about 30 guineas and 10  to 15 chickens.  We also had 3 dogs and lots (20) of cats.  I would lose a guinea or two to cats but they usually hatched out enough chicks to make up for it.  They are very good protectors.  Once in a while I will see a snake down our lane but in our yard very seldom.  Any animal that roams, cats, dogs, chickens, guineas, ducks, pigs,  etc.  will keep the snakes away plus keeping the grass mowed.  Now I have 3 dogs, 1 cat.  No snakes.

Leon uses that speed limit as a way to catch many unsuspecting people.  My son was at a friends house in Leon and an off duty officer saw that his pickup tag expired in December.  He radio'd the officer that was on the hyway.  Before Ty got out of town the cop had the ticket already written out without looking at his registration that showed that Ty had a farm tag that did not actually expire until the middle of February.  My husband and I drove all the way back to Leon and the police officer told us that WE would have to take off from work to explain his mistake and to get out of paying an 80.00 ticket.  We finally had him call his boss and Ty's ticket was dissolved but beware of the Leon cops, they are out to get you for any minor offense.

The Coffee Shop / Re: Rural Water

It sounds like Howards problems are due to lack of consistancy of chlorine and testing. Maybe that is what is wrong with Severy's water.  I thought that there were other problems and that is why Severy was trying to get onto RWD.     I haven't heard anything about it for years.  Did something happen where it would cost the city too much money? By the way yellow is what color the water is in Severy .

I have a question.  Wasn't Severy supposed to be getting rural water from RWD in Eureka?  I thought they were getting online 2 years ago.  I would hope that it would be soon because of the quality of water that comes out of the faucets isn't real appealing in color or taste.  Why is the quality of the present water system so bad?  If anyone has any info on this let me know?

Flo, I had Ronnie in class as a substitute in Eureka.  I know his father passed away with Chrones Disease.  Were any of his grandparents still alive?  Where did his mother live?  Ronnie was my son Travis's age.  I was shocked by the news.

OK Catwoman, My mother in law has told me that we have a quince tree on our 80 acres.  Do you have any recipes for "quinces"?  The tree does bear fruit late in the summer.  Let me know and I will try it.
