Title: Have you planted Tomatoes yet??
Post by: frawin on April 05, 2010, 04:59:29 PM
I planted my  early Tomatoes a day late, I didn't get them planted until Friday, April 2nd.  They are really liking this weather and it looks like they are growing already.

well planting right now is a gamble.  Especially with the way the weather has been lately.  Hail storm will kill them just as fast as snow.
Plus last frost day around here is may 1.

I'll keep mine in til may :)

Steve, I have planted Tomatoes on April 1 in this area, and your area, for years and have rarely ever lost one. I know of no reliable source that gives the average last Frost date as May 1 in this or your area. A hail storm is very possible anytime. Admittedly I do take steps to protect the plants for awhile but it doesn't take that much to do it. You loose a whole Months growing season by waiting and hot weather can slow your plants growth and reduce your crop .

I understand that, but its a risk that if you lose, you lose the years crop.  Starting over is iffy at best.
I don't know i haven't had problems.  I get my tomatos about the same time when i grow them inside as i do when i plant them early. Its all on when you start them.  60 - 90 days from germination til you get first fruit.

I understand Steve, I think it is solely up to the individual. Everyone has different experiences and ideas. What works for one may not work for others.

Yeah, well good luck. :)  I always tend to start my tomatos around first week of february.  Set them out when last frost has gone by.   Usually i start getting blooms int he first week.  The other thing is timing to plant between the blights.  early blight hits usually in may - june. That one is tough to get around.  Usually if you can plant later, you avoid the early blight.

Another thing i usually do when planting is put a couple tums and a tablespoon of epsoms in the hole where i plant the tomato plant.

Then you must have lost all your tomato plants last year when that big ice storm hit in April huh?

I would love to at least get my squash outside.  I think I started them too soon cause I have blooms on them.  The tomatoes need a little bit more time before they're ready to go outdoors.  I may go ahead and put the squash plants outside and take my chances.  If I lose them, I can always replant.

You all can have your tomatoes and whatever.  I have a planter of nasturtiums.  They are looking better every day now that they are setting outside.  The desire to plant nasturtiums hit me suddenly one day and as soon as I could, I picked up a package of seed.  I planted them in a hanging planter, set it in the east window and hoped for the best.  Hopefully, they will bloom before anything happens to them.  I haven't had to bring them back inside for more than a week now.

No I didn't loose any plants last year. I put cages around my plants, put clear plastic around the cages and I cut the bottoms out of gallon jugs and put the jugs over my plants for 2-3 weeks. I pack dirt up around the jugs. The last ice storm last year was the 28th day of March in Elk County.

I would like to know why every time someone puts a post on the forum, someone has to argue about it.  Just because it is not done your way why is it wrong?  ???

I don't know about arguing, i know i wasn't.  I know that most tomato problems that one encounters like blossom end rot, can be prevented before it happens by putting a couple tums in the hole when you plant.  Also most of the time we don't think about the root development, and the fruit development. Most of the concern in fertilizing is the foliage.
So when you put epsoms salts in the soil, you will strengthen the tomato plant stalk, limbs, as well as increase your fruit development.

Too much work for me.  I'll just keep mine indoors.  LOL  I actually have blossoms on my squash plants.

I saw on another forum a woman who just places her plants in a south window and actually grows tomatoes all winter long just in the window and she's farther north.  So, I may try that next year.  We'll see.

i've grown them in a south window before but not this far north.  only problem with them is they tend to get thrips if you do.

This woman was farther north than we are.  She was in North Dakota if I remember right.  She had pictures of this window with all this snow outside and these big tomato plants with blossoms and bright red tomatoes and this was in December.

I'm having a heck of a time with my tomato starts this year.  They are just not growing like I want them to.  Probably because "someone" didn't loan me his lights like he said he would.   :P

That is very true Wilma. Seems I remember about 17 inches of the white stuff around the 27th of April one year.
Yes, it is rare, but does happen. Think the one I remember was back in the 70's. Made us all stay home.
Hopefully this will not happen this year.

I used to work at Valley Feed & Seed in Wichita and I remember as soon as it got warm in April people would be in in force buying their garden plants and planting them.  Then invariably we would get a freeze and they'd all be back in buying the same plants over again.  LOL
My mom always taught me never to plant any of the warm season stuff till end of April/beginning of May and even then we've had some mighty cold nights.  Kansas is fun that way.  You just never know what you're going to get.

I did try putting out some cucumbers the other day and the rather cool nights....they pretty much look like they're going to have to be replaced.  Oh well, such is life.  But we're wide open on the north and get all the cold north winds through here.

I did have a wonderful time though planting all my Canna bulbs and Glads and Caladiums today along with a few other plants and I'm going to try a rose bush one more time.  I always manage to kill them.  I love them, but they don't like me much.

I had my chickens parked on my garden spot after last harvest and all winter, sure didnt have to worry about any thing growing in there. I kind of worried about it being too hot fertilizer wise but we had so much rain I decided to move the chickens over and give it a try. I only tilled rows for planting and left the rest of the soil alone. I put out 20 potatoes in one row Friday, which according to the lunar planting calender is a little late but still in phase. It suggests waiting until the last couple of days of April to plant tomatoes, dont know if I can wait that long though. All together we are waiting to plant tomatoes, brussle sprouts, cucumbers, goliath jalepenos and cauliflower. Im thinking maybe last part of next week.

I'll tell, planted 30 yesterday and planted 30 a few days ago.   I have 21 more to plant.   Waiting a few more days might have been better but I had to make hay when the sun shines. I raised several but visited the nursery in Elk Falls and their tomatoes makes my look pretty bad.  Also bought egg plants and peppers and a moon vine.  Guess the vine blooms at night so when I come home from dancing I can check on it.  Also planted Jerusalem Artichokes but Lois Markley said they will take over.  Planting 3 items for Father Sixtus, the Catholic priest from Burma.  Will have apples, peaches, pears, apricots, and plums unless it freezes.  Have raspberries, boysenberries, dewberries, blackberries, blueberries, strawberries, and loganberries. Would   like gooseberries.  Have 3 fig trees.  Also corn, popcorn, parsnips, pole beans, regular beans, yard long beans, watermelon, cantaloupe, okra, 4 kinds of squash, pumpkins, cucumbers,  radishes, beets, asparagus, rubarb and a three legged dog and a 3 footed cat and a 2 legged wife.  Hard to believe isn't it.

Wow! That sounds just like home! My parents' place had a garden that size when I was growing up. We didn't have quite that many toms, but all the rest we had plus grapes, red currents and goose berries. Mom had the  Sun Chokes down behind the barn in a separate area so they could spread and it didn't matter. No cukes? We never had Logan berries or figs but we had Boysenberries and Dewberries and all the rest of your list. Had a nice nectarine too. One dog at a time and passels of cats and canned and froze up a storm. Thanks for the great memories. You really made me smile.

Delbert, is this all for your own use? or do you plan to sell some of it?  Let us know!  We have a Farmer's Market here in Bartlesville and they sell their herbs, veggies, fruits, etc. even home made bread and sweet rolls, etc. on Saturday mornings after the gardens start producing.    It is fun going down there and getting fresh berries, and other goodies!  We have tomatoes and peppers, but don't plant anything else.  Sounds wonderful, but you won't have much idle time on your hands from the sounds of your garden.

(Giant Marconi) I can see already we're going to have early blight problems again. May lose one plant, (will that then be a late Early Girl?)  ;D, will start spraying fungicide tomorrow. I started one more from seed just in case. It will be a late, but alive, Early Girl but will extend the season.

Remember those nasturtiums I planted in the house?  They are blooming beautifully, are still in the hanging planter that they were planted in and are hanging at the south end of the front porch.  I learned that nasturtiums don't transplant well, so better to plant them where they are to stay.

How are the tomatoes doing?  Haven't heard anything lately and no one has offered me their excess.

Pam, mine are rather spindly too, but are coming along slowly. Weather related? We haven't eaten any yet and it's been almost too hot to set many blossoms, but there may be a few in about a week. My cukes and beans and squash and peppers suddenly said "OK NOW" and we have lots.

I bought one of those planters that hang the tomato plants upside down.  I planted 3 Big Boy plants in it.  All I have are blooms and my plants look really bad.  I'm giving them one more week and if I don't see any little tomatos then the plant is history.  I have to climb a ladder everytime I water it and then directions say you have to water it every day.  My blooms look terrible.  I really feel sorry for the plant, but if I don't see tomatos, then the hanging plant is gone.

Are the blooms not setting anything? Perhaps if you do some hand pollination? Can you set the whole thing right side up in a big pot and set a tomato cage over it to hold it up ? Poor thing, I hate for you to have to toss it out completely.

Well, my yellow pear tomatoes had bitten the dust...I don't know if they had some kind of blight or if the plant was just winding down for the year.  My Roma and Roma Grape tomatoes are still going strong and producing prodigiously.  My strawberries are still coming on, just with smaller fruits in this heat.  My hummingbirds are busy divebombing each other and my goldfinches are in full brilliance.  Even my hosta is beginning to bloom, which amazed me since it's in its first year of being planted.  I love this time of year...It's a harvest for not only the tummy but also the eyes... :D :D

Yep.  The hanging plant bit the dust.  Threw it away a week ago.  At least I'm not wasting water trying to keep the plant alive while it doesn't produce tomatoes.  Jim's plants are doing great.  I made salsa out of all those Roma tomatoes that he planted.  I like large round tomatoes, but no; we have Roma tomatoes.  LOL

I had wondered about those upside down tomatoes but did not give them a try.

Consumer Reports did a review of the upside down tomatoes this month, June 2011, titled "Don't Flip over Topsy Turvy." Their suggestion was that "pots or boxes are a better choice." Although they also said the Topsy Turvy produced "fine tomatoes" but there were drawbacks getting to that point.

RJ, there are plenty of things you could still grow this year if you want to ,especially if your new place has a garden plot. I'm sure there are people on here who could advise you. Then again knowing these nice folks, when their gardens come on I suspect they would give you more than you could handle. ;)I think I'll finally get my toms and peppers in tomorrow. It's still been getting down in the 40's at night so I've been in no hurry.

The best tomatoes I ever had were poor little plants in a six pack that I rescued from the Grenola market. I had not planned to put out tomatoes that year, but felt sorry for them. Since it was Mothers' day weekend I had my Mom with me, that leaves me with a special memory for that Mothers' day. I got more tomatoes that year than we could eat; I gave tomatoes to everybody, even to Judy at the Curly-Q. You just never know how they will do, usually they like hot sunny weather, so there is still plenty of time. Good luck!

Did you ever try the trick with a Miracle Grow potting soil bag?. You just put the bag on the ground in a sunny place, poke a few holes in the bottom for drainage, cut a nice hole in the side that's up, put in the tomato or pepper give it some water and you're done. My hair dresser swears it works great and she doesn't have to dig or use a tub or big pot.I guess she must stake it as it grows but she didn't say.

Way too expensive to do.  That potting soil is over 13 dollars a bag. :O

Walmart had it for like around 13 bucks the other day.    I don't use Miricle grow anyway if i can avoid it.  Theres better out there and i most certainly don't use it on garden plants.  Potting medium is best used for starting and keeping plants til they can be planted in soil. :).   And your better off using Potting soil that doesn't use miricle grow in it. Use petersons 20/20/20  and mix it according to the needs of your plants.

You can also make your own cheaper by buying sphagnum, sand and using woodchips. or pinebark.
Heres a good tip on saving some cash, if you need seed starting medium, don't buy the overpriced bag in the store, get yourself the bag of regular potting soil and use a box with 1/4" mesh on it and sift out the bark.

Planted two tomato plants and 2 peppers early this week. did mulch them a little.
I needed to prune a tree that grows out and over my patch and think I have finally
gotten the right amount of sun for them.
I refuse to give up my redbud tree and since I live at the housing in Longton, I must work
with what I have.  I did notice this year my patch has several worms in it.
I have lived here since 92 and the ground did produce a couple years but then it needed to rest mostly it
was clay and can't call it dirt as just did not have energy to produce. Over the years I have added produce, compost
when I had the money the better potting soil..........and finally have worms.
Now will see how they grow.
I have hummers this year and they are swarming my feeder. I love it. last few days have had all kinds of birds, like yellow canary type birds, color and size. not just one a whole flock. think they are a type of finch. Also had a couple, one of each sex, try to drink nectar out of the hummingbird feeder. It sits about 10 feet away from my window and when on 'puter I spend as much time watching them. Oh, have a pair of dove that spend time on the ground. I looked out window last week and they were walking down the sidewalk, like they lived here and were going visiting.................Love it. Didn't realize they were so big. love the music that wakes me up in morning.
I love SPRING!

Steve, I make my own potting mix too. I was just sharing a story. We have mushroom soil available here also, cast off from last years commercial mushroom growers. It's great stuff! Several years ago I had 6 inches added to the top of my garden and its wonderful. I'm going to go start a load of laundry now and go hit the garden and get some plants in finally!

We haven't planted a thing yet! Kids at the daycare keep asking, "Are you going to plant stuff in there"? LOL- I say, "When Jeff, decides what I can plant and when." You have to know Jeff to know what I mean. We put manure on ours and tilled it up, just need to get busy. I hope it doesn't get to late to get a garden in. Oh, a friend of mine told me a trick. A amish man told them if you have old carpet cut it up in strips and lay between the rows. Helps to keep weeds undercontrol. Has anyone heard that before?????

By this, I mean two orioles  ( I know this is the wrong spelling, but it wasn't the Baltimore kind) LOL I think Teresa should put a spell checker on this grid. LOL

Been working in yard some and my body says to stop and take a break. I will have tomorrow and many more if God so wills, to putter around here. Yard is looking good, and it needs some polishing...you know hand weeding and then raking.

Angie any thing that  blocks light even newspaper can be used to keep weeds down and moisture in. Also the paper will decompose and be plowed back into the ground. Carpet you will need to pick up each year, but a very good idea for scraps of it.
Good luck

There are a lot of carpet stores in Wichita, (or were), and people would swarm their dumpsters in the evenings to retrieve old carpet for garden use. Great for 'tween the rows and on the paths, no mud, no weeds. And it lets the moisture soak through to the subsoil. I would rather mulch with prarie hay, but haven't been able to buy any in the little bales that I can handle, for a long time. It has all gone to the big round bales. I can't handle one of those and nobody wants to deliver. Just get along the best I can----??  ???

Do you know anyone in the Howard area who I could hire to till a garden spot? I have an established spot and also would like to have a new small place tilled. Thank you for any leads.

Do you have a tiller and need someone to run it?  Or do they have to have their own tiller?  Perhaps szcrucish  (sorry about the spelling) could help you?

I don't have one right now and i'm not in any shape to till anything.   Just had surgery the other day and now i'm battling possible pneumonia.  Not sure on that.  When it rains it pours you know.

If I had been Frank, it would NOT have made the table.......LOL. I have blooms this year. I don't want to say that too loudly.
While I was gone I just knew the weather would have made hay out of my patch, but Praise the Lord, except for being rainsoaked
(I mean the ground) and needing a de-treeing. all the maples seed popped up and pretty little twigs/trees are in with the plants.
I will get to that tomorrow.
You enjoy that pretty red tomato. How did you fare in the storms? Happy eating.

Judy, the Tornado warning sirens did go off, but we didn't have damage here. When the siren went off we were in the Steel Safe Room and some of our neighbors came over and stayed with us until the all clear. The loss of life and property damage is so terrible from all of the storms. Maybe this is what is left for those of us that didn't make the list for the Rapture.

Tis possible, but, I doubt it. I am sure the people who lost it all including loved ones, think the worse.
It is just mind blowing. I was in Wisconsin for the brunt of it...........and only way I could find anything out
was the internet when we were at the house............not sure of where their channels were nor the fancyness?
of their equipment.........and all.
I tear up when I watch the video's of it. Coming home from Topeka this past Wednesday I traveled 75 and went through
downtown Topeka in a "Frog-strangler" Always wondered what that was like, and found out. Right outside the Capitol building and
had to almost drive white line down the middle.....Of course, the other traffic did too, but all were aware of each other and I would have pulled over if I could have found a spot, but couldn't get across the highwater. sewers couldn't handle the run off.
Then crossing the flinthills, ranch land I got a bird's eye view of all the weather around, including the clouds that the KC Tornado warning was in..nasty looking and I was very glad it was east of me. rest of the trip was hit and miss rain and at times a car length between rain and not rain,..love Kansas...........but so glad the worst is over.

I brought this thread back to Quote the last post that I had with Judy on it. As most of you are aware I plant my Tomatoes April 1 every year. This year was no different. At first the Spring was so cool they took of a little slow, but since we have had all of the HOT HOT weather Myrma has been picking a lot of Tomatoes. THe Neighbors all lost their late Tomatoes so they are enjoying ours.
I have been in the Tulsa Spine and Specialty Hospital off and on for almost a month so taking care of the Garden has been left to Myrna and one of our super neighbors. Also our Sweet Bannana and Green Peppers have really done well. I did get to see the Garden a little today and the heat is really starting to hurt the Tomatoes and Peppers, we don't have anything else in the Garden.

I ended up planting my tomatoes in May this year.  They got some good growth on them before the heat wave hit.  Now, I've got some little yellow cherries that are ripening but the plants are mainly just surviving for now.  I think, once this heat wave breaks a bit, I'll have plenty of tomatoes to spare...It's just hard to wait, is all.  ;D

think, once this heat wave breaks a bit, that is what I think, but in mean time my vines are wilting during the day so bad I am tempted to pull them up. If I were to wilt like that, they would call Zimmermans to come get me.
Oh, well, least we don't have the skeeters this year. Not even larve in the drinking water for the dogs. One good thing about heat.

If your tomatoes wilt during the heat of the day but perk up again in the evening ,don't give up.Many do that to conserve moisture. If you know they've given plenty of water, please give them another chance.

No problem diane, I just watered an hour or so ago and they perked right up. Still have green tomato's that don't show they are in distress..........just not growing. Also the blooms may still be there....least their stems are.
And if I pulled them up, the bed would be empty and a big waste of my effort. I am not giving up. YET

Tomato leaves curl up at the edges if they don't get enough water and if they are getting too much water.  The whole plant will wilt but it takes its toll on the plant if it happens too much.

I think Jim picked his first tomato today. They are just not producing. A gentleman that I work with brought some very nice tomatos to work the other day, so I did enjoy a nice fresh large tomato with my lunch. Oh, how I love garden fresh tomatos. I don't believe there has ever been a better food made by God.

Ahem...Finest food created by God?  That would have to be an even draw between (1) crisp, sweet, corn on the cob, roasted then dipped in butter and sprinkled with mesquite (a la Kansas State Fair); (2) my homemade candy; (3) Dulce de Leche ice cream by Haagen Dasz; (4) my mama's Baby Puddin' Pie; and (5) my mama's homemade ANYTHING.

Crap.  I'm hungry again.  So much for my diet.

I gave it up. Not only were my 'maters wilting during the day and just standing there not going no where...over the weekend I noticed a beatle.not sure what kind.but next I saw the bottom leaves turning brown and then looked the plant over and they were eating up a storm.
So lastnight I pulled them up and trashed them.
Guess that is the last time I try tomato's in the ground....next year, if there is a next year. Good Lord willing and the creek don't rise, I will put them in containers and make sure they stay in sun.

OR, I will just remember when and hope neighbors and friends have bumper crops to share. I did get one or two tomato's that actually tasted good........like tom's ought to.......oh well......my cukes look good yet. Did see a beatle on them, not same breed but I dusted it this morning and there are blooms galore.
