Use the chart below to determine the relationship between you and another relative.
1. Determine the common ancestors you and the other person share.
2. Starting with your common ancestors in the upper left corner, find yourself across the top and note the column.
3. Again starting with your common ancestors in the upper left corner, find the other person down the left side and note the row.
4. Go to the box where your column and their row coincide.
5. This is the relationship you share with the other person.
This is good, but the common ancestor I am curious about goes back to the 17th century.

I had the other cataract surgery yesterday and guess what. I can see better without my glasses and an old pair of glasses works better than my current ones. Can't wait to try some new ones.

Lois: On your relationship chart, I am the 8 great grandchild of the common ancestor and the one I am curious about is 4 greats of the common ancestor. What kind of cousins are we?
I was afraid someone would throw me a curve. :laugh: But in answer to your question, Wilma, the chart I have only goes as far out as 7th generation great- grandchild. But in my calculations, I am figuring it would be 5th cousins, 4 x removed. The other person would be a very, very distant cousin. Most people wouldn't recognize that relationship at all.
Fortunately we don't have to recognize the relationship. The other person is long gone and wouldn't have been the least interested in being related to me anyway. I was just curious as to what it actually was considering our common ancestor. Thanks, anyway.
