It is HOT HOT HOT  here today..
Whew.. i don't think that there is an ounce of air out there to breathe that isn't coming off of a 107 degree furnace.

Same here in Oklahoma!  Yesterday was 105, and it is supposed to continue in that range through at least Wednesday.  There is a 20% possibility of some moisture here by next weekend, but it will probably burn out by the time it's supposed to arrive.  I cannot imagine how it must have been to be a pioneer living in or going across the Oklahoma Territory prairie in a covered wagon during the hot summer with the winds blowing ninety to nothing.  Thank Goodness for air conditioning!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

When I was fixing supper last evening at 6 Fred asked me what the temp was - and the remote on the east side of the house said 111.
I wished he hadn't asked.  lol

The temp isn't what bothers me...What I hate is the heat index attached to it.  The humidity has been killer for the past few days.
Title: Re: Weather
Post by: Jane on July 13, 2009, 04:38:18 PM
When we left St Robert, MO Sunday after spending the week end with our daughter stationed at Ft Leonard Wood. The humidity was 100%. Saturday night we had run into rain, hail from pea size to golf ball size but it was soft and did no damage. :o
I am sure if anyone had breathing problems they were in the air conditioning.

The rain cooled it off a bit today, for a little while.  Nice relief, but probably not for long!  WeatherBug is already giving excessive heat warnings for the next couple days.

We're watching bad weather moving toward us south from Kansas.  Has Elk County received any thunderstorms or hail tonight?
Title: Re: Weather

It is 1:20 a.m. and it's raining .. no not raining.. POURING! and I mean pouring down rain. in huge sheets of rain.
Its been raining for the past few hours..but it has been thundering and pouring buckets for the past 30 minutes solid.
This will be a frog strangler.. Now itis just hammering down even harder and there went the lights almost ...better post and get off here..

Anybody have totals?

QuoteThis will be a frog strangler
The swimming pool had frogs this morning - quite a few, maybe as many as a dozen. Very unusual. All were alive and assisted out of the pool.  :D
Title: Re: Weather

When I used to lifeguard, we'd find frogs in the pool after a storm, too.  Odd.

I don't think we got as much rain out here West of Howard.  Good thing... my hubby is loading out 18 semi loads of yearlings this morning up on the hill!  If I wasn't working, I'd love to go up and get pictures.  What a sight to see, I'm sure!

happy wet, soggy Tuesday.

I haven't heard what the official total here is, but my rain gauge had 3" +.....the plus was from the rain
earlier in the day and I do have a tree close to the guage so it may not be right.

When I got up around 1:30 our low places were totally flooded and it was very noisy...no not with thunder and lightning.....but just the amount of water falling out of the sky.

I didn't notice any wind with it............never had to shut windows........but I did have a limb down this morning.......but nothing else.
Guess that stops the haying for a few days.

Post by: Jo McDonald on July 21, 2009, 08:36:24 AM
We had 4 inches in our gauge and I talked to Chris over at the Elk City Lake and he said they had 4 1/4 inches.  We had hanging baskets
on the ground and our tomato plants were leaning to the left.  They must be democrat plants  ( UGH )   :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D if we had know that we would have planted something else.  That is my giggle for the day, I guess - forgive me.  lol

But so glad we didn't get any hail, or I guess we didn't, I saw no evidence of any.
Title: Re: Weather
Post by: Tobina+1 on July 21, 2009, 11:08:04 AM
Finally went out and looked at the gauge... 2-1/2" here West of Howard.  We did get quite a lot of wind, but no branches down in the yard.  I have leaning hanging baskets (the shepherd's hooks are leaning from the soggy ground), but don't see much in the garden.  It's a little lower and more protected, though.
Hubby said it took them about an hour longer to load cattle due to the mud and the trucks having probs backing up.  Still 4 hours for 18 trucks is pretty good... about 13 minutes per semi.

I slept through nearly the whole thing. Only one blast of lightning and clap of thunder got my attention long enough to mutter "Well, that was respectable!" before I rolled over and went back to sleep.
Title: Re: Weather
Post by: greatguns on July 21, 2009, 03:30:26 PM
I had 3.5 inches of rain.  My tomatoes were leaning to the right!  Wait a minute if I face the other direction they are leaning to the left.  It doesn't matter because the hail knocked the tomatoes to the ground and off the vines.  My sister that lives at Latham said the wind flattened her corn.  Life goes on.

Post by: Rudy Taylor on July 21, 2009, 04:29:16 PM
There ... that's the answer for Jo!  If you think you're leaning to the left, just turn around.  Hey, it works for tomato plants!  LOL!

Now, this is my kind of weather.............cool enough at night you (I) need a light blanket
but during daytime I get to wear shorts..............

It has been very nice.........but I do want to continue with summer for a few months.

I keep hearing about "Global Warming" but where is it?????
Have a great day!

We only had about an inch of rain, which is just making the grass grow. You can see it grown if you stare. It is cool here now but I refuse to open the windows because I know it is just going to get hot again.
We check our window wells everyday for baby toad's. I also heard that the copperhead are hatching so to wear shoes no matter where you go. (Happy thought for the day)

Around the Flint Hills, I think we have gotten the same amount of rain as past years, but instead of it coming all at once (June or July), it's paced itself out and given us good rains throughout the summer.  This is good, as normally we have dry spells and almost drought conditions by August.

Tobina+1

I don't think we need worry about drought................but, I do think we are awfully close to fall
I know it is just about August.......but what I am seeing is about a month ahead of normal....

did you get a peek at "Global Warming" this summer?..........I only had a couple of days when I actually
thought it was "HOT" (Remember I am an old lady and most of the time reach for a sweater when everyone else
is removing clothes   LOL~)

I hope you are  staying comfortable

To go along with Teresa's funny Texas popcorn picture I will add this. I am not sure people in my area will see the humor in this but I know Warph in Arizona and my Kansas\Midwest friends will see it.

Today my city recorded(according to the news) a record rainfall for this date of .04". Depending on what time people here got up the moisture on the ground could have been confused for our summer marine layer (fog) , the street sweeper washing the street, or not even noticed.

It is hot and very dry here in Texas.  My dog is only eating about half as much as usual and knows where all the shady places are at.  About the only difference between our heat here in Texas and the heat in Arizona is we do have shade here, Arizona doesn't.

One summer when I was in high school it was so hot in Arizona that the farm workers could only work at night, it was to hard on the equipment to work in the daytime heat.  My fathers boss told all workers that if they wanted to go to town to go before 7 am, 135 miles to Pheonix, and if they couldn't come home that night after dark to stay in town the next day and come home after dark so as not to be on the highway in the heat.  It was 123 by 10 or 11 am every day for almost three weeks.

Well lets see, I have a sister in law and a good friend that lives in AZ. When they come back here the humidity kills them. When it is a 100
here it is only 90 there. Also they have umbrella's and pools which is where my sister in law stays. The last I knew neither one of them were vampires. I can not believe that all the people that live in AZ only come out at NIGHT.

Yes, we got some rain and storms last night... and again this morning.  Light sprinkles here now, but looks like we'll get more in a bit.  According to weather news last night... expect rain until Friday!
Title: Re: Weather
Post by: Jane on August 17, 2009, 03:27:13 PM
OK, I was wrong, it did not rain, it was a monsoon. I left for work at 5:15 am got about half way to work and had it rained any harder I was going to pull off and wait until it slowed down  it was a little foggy so that did not help. I hate driving in weather like that. They gad 6 inches of rain in Topeka but we only had a little over an inch here in Wakarusa.

Title: Re: Weather
Post by: flintauqua on August 20, 2009, 09:20:15 PM
I saw that Tornado Warning, and then got awakened by our tornado sirens about 3:00 am, as basically the same cell/line of storms came though here.  If you drew a line from Hutchison to Gentry, Moline would be almost exactly half way.  So if there's storms at Hutch at 4:00 p.m. and moving through Elk County around 9:00, then I can usually count of them getting here around 2 in the morning.

Jane, I agree, it was upper 50's here this A.M.  We enjoyed coffee on the patio and watching the hummingbirds!  We have several feeders and lots of flowers; it is so entertaining to watch them!  We sometimes have breakfast out there too!  Had our grandkids last week and they spent hours out there watching the birds (several other species as well).  Good entertainment for them (6 & 10 yrs. of age).  I agree, if we could keep the weather like it has been for the past few days, it would be wonderful year 'round.

 I have come eye to eye with a couple of our Hummingbirds. They seem to know we love watching them. We also have a couple of little birds we have yet to find in the bird book. Rex just loves our bats at night, I have had them so close they feather my hair when they fly by. They also seem to know we are in love with nature. We have rabbits that do not run and deer that just stand and look at us. We also have a couple of Tom Turkeys that come in the year. This year we keep hearing Bob White so we are hoping they make a come back.
I just cannot make myself move back to town.

Raining again/still/more.  Actually, the sun came out in the middle of the afternoon, but didn't last for long.  Hubby just dumped the rain gauge, but I think it showed around 2-1/2" before he dumped it.  He said Howard (in town) had 3".  From the radar, it just keeps building!  Kinda reminds me of June 2007 when we had all that rain in 5-6 days!  We've got a long way to go to do that, but just the feeling and the way it's raining.  I haven't ventured out to see the rivers, so someone else will have to give that report.

Wilma spoke too soon!  Actually, the evening was very pretty with the sun peeking out a bit.  But we got another 1-1/2" during the night with some fantastic lightning and thunder displays.  Sprinking again this morning.  I think it's supposed to have a break mid-morning, and then back again later today, though.  Eastern Elk County is in a flash flood warning.

Quote160 highway was closed between Moline and Independence due to high water this morning

It often closes over by Oak Valley - where the low water area is just east of town.

There was some flash flooding of roads in Howard mid- to late-morning. Not even really flash-flooding - just enough water to cover the street completely.
