Title: Let's talk about Welfare
Post by: debid on June 02, 2009, 01:44:00 PM
and government aid.   I'm not talking about the elderly.  I'm not talking about the single mom trying to get an education so she can make enough money later to raise her kids.   I am talking about people who make government programs their way of life.

I am going to be 47 this month and I have worked since I was 15 years old.    Even when my kids were small I ran a small daycare (and paid taxes) because it was going to cost me almost as much in childcare as I would make working outside of the home.   Why do I (and others who go to work every day) have to pay for others who choose not to work or barely work?

Please don't bring race into this discussion.

Every few years someone proposes a program where people on welfare ( who are able bodied and don't fit your definition) will have to do "something" to get their check .Then it disappears never to be heard of again. It's good question.

Info to ruminate over:

From the right -

http://www.heritage.org/Research/Welfare/wm2287.cfm (http://www.heritage.org/Research/Welfare/wm2287.cfm)

From the center -

http://www.urban.org/welfare/index.cfm (http://www.urban.org/welfare/index.cfm)

There's a lot more out there, but most is old, either leading up to the major changes in 1996, or contrasting pre- and post- 1996.

I have used info from both of the aforementioned organizations, and have always found their work to be well researched.

Some on this forum will chime in to say that the Urban Institute is "far-left" or liberal.  They will be correct, for anything from the center is far to the left of their point-of-view.
