What is the best mulch for a rose garden? I know I can look it up, but I am too lazy to sit here and sort through all the information that is offered.
Wilma, I like cocoa hulls. They smell good, stay in place better than other mulch, control weed growth and do a great job of keeping moisture. I also, think they look good.
David
I like to use prarie hay for mulch, it serves the purpose, looks natural for the area and augments the soil.

Sixdogsmom's name made me think about one risk to be aware of with cocoa hulls. If you have dogs they may eat some of the cocoa hulls which can be toxic to dogs. My dog has no interest in eating them but you may want to consider the possibility. He is more prone to eating all my basil along with my cat.

So cat tastes better with basil? I just learned something. ;D I use small pine bark mulch around my flowers.
Diane I might consider the basil very seriously. Right now I am nursing a fat lip from Little Man, my tomcat. I was reading before going to sleep last Sat. night, he was laying next to me and decided that I was not paying enough attention to him when he just reached out and stuck me in the lip with one claw. Ouch! I popped him and he scrunched down and just sang. Ornery thing, I can't stay mad at him for long. :-\ :-\
Ow! They can be very demanding and insistent can't they?
Poorly constructed sentence on my part. They both eat the basil.
I am glad you straightened that out.

Well, here I assumed you just had a gourmet doggie. ??? ;D Oh well.
David, before I married Ted, my cats weren't allowed outdoors. Little Man loved pansies, and I made sure he got a goodly portion as they are safe for everyone to eat. Trixie was just a puppy then and figured out they were good, so when I took her outside she would help herself, plant and all. She would go at them in a running grab as she knew I didn't want her to pull up the plants. More than once she brought in a whole plant for sharing with the cat. :D

Wilma (and others), as soon as I posted and read my post I thought I should rewrite the sentence. Laziness took over and I posted a poorly constructed sentence. The humor that could be found in it was too good to pass up. My guess is that cat would taste better with basil.

Sorry David, the devil made me do it! ;D

Diane in my eyes you could never do wrong. (That is not an invitation to try! ;D)

Alright, David.... Basil, the Cat from Chicago has taken exception of your poorly constructed sentence AND this, buddy: "My guess is that cat would taste better with basil." He wants you to know that he's been dating a cat from the 8th ward, Chicago named Lulu Belle and now she's all upset about "that cat would taste better with basil" you mentioned. If I were you (and I'm not) I would write Basil and Lulu Belle and get this straighten out. I would hate to see you wind up in a Chicago Court in a big lawsuit. Basil's pretty upset.
You can reach Basil at: http://www.dupanet.com/basil.html
It just goes to show you that anything and everything can be found in cyberspace. In looking at the link you posted it appears that Basil is not in a good position to sue anyone. My condolences to the owner (I didn't get his/her name). Basil is not upset, HE'S DEARLY DEPARTED
Maybe Lulu Belle is departed too. Perhaps they are having a heavenly romance. :D

I spoke to my brother the lawyer, who was born in Harvey, IL on the south side of Chicago, and he said he would take care of it. One of our strategies was going to keep Basil tied up in legal motions until he passed away there by never making it to court. Hearing of Basil's untimely passing I guess maybe he handled it in an "old school" Chicago fashion. I must now go and send my condolences to Lullu Belle. I believe a dead Basil plant should do the trick.

Thank you Diane.
Now back to mulch and the original topic. I bet shredded basil\ Basil would work too.
The End

I planted basil, the plant, one year and it just about took over the place.
I have Basil in a jar on my kitchen shelf! ;D

I'm glad you clarified that, Wilma... for Basils sake. Now that he's past over that Rainbow Bridge, may he rest in peace.

I don't know if Lulu Belle is goin' to like that, SDM... she's pretty upset and I believe she's been in touch with Ingrid Newkirk, President and Founder of Peta, about David and his comments about Basil, especially the shredded one. I sure would hate to see you get involved, too.... you know, with six dogs and all.
OOoooohhhhh---- :( There is bound to be an investigation! LOL!

That explains the scantily clad women in basil bikinis and the news helicopters that woke me up this morning. I thought it was just another one of my neighbor's Goddess Worship parties. Gotta go take them some more of my Tomato & Basil soup. No wonder no one wanted any of the Beef Stew.
David
Just don't wear yourself out before the weekend starts! ;)
