This corset advertisement appears in the Howard Courant on June 11, 1938. I am so glad that women have come a long way since those days, because there just "ain't NO WAY, you're gonna get me trussed up in one of those things." I am unsure just how women got themselves stuffed into one of those, as I think they laced up the back. Please click on the picture to enlarge it.
Believe it or not, but I am having one made. :o
With Kjell being a cowboy action shooter and all of the things we have to attend..one of the requirements is dressing up in period correct clothing...and of course. comes not only the beautiful day dresses and bustles etc, but the evening gowns, hats, jewelery and yes... corsets.
Can you breathe in them... ahhhmmmm I will soon let you know.. hahaha........as I will have to be wearing all the different outfits in a month or so.
Speaking of vintage clothing............I have some interest in that.........in my collection of sewing patterns, I have a few dresses that are styled for the 1800's, and I've made a few. But I have always wondered how women sat down when they were wearing bustles, or if they did or not. I also have made a bonnet that matched one of the dresses I had made several years ago. 8).
In reading historical novels of the Wild West, I get a bang out of the descriptions the authors give on the clothing and accessories that was worn in that time period. Back then, purses were called "reticules." (I love reading western/historical fiction novels) But then, I guess a different thread is needed for that.
Underware was called "unmentionables".. :)
Bloomers and chemises and of course corsets. All of those things were worn under all the other 10 layers.. Can you imagine how hot that must have been?
I have all of them but when it is hot I forgo the bloomers etc under the dresses. ;)
No one knows unless there is a strong burst of wind! :o
And do you have one of them hand-held fans, to fan yourself with? I can remember when I was little, some of the elderly ladies would be sitting there during church services, just fanning a way. I think Moon Funeral Home used to distribute them as a complimentary item.
Yeah..........I can just imagine you wearing high-topped laced boots, a long dress, with long-sleeves, and about a half dozen petticoats, all trussed up in a corset.................I wouldn't be able to move......let alone breathe! Good Luck, as you're gonna need all you can get!
Knowing Ms. T, she will probably rig the dress so that it will fly up whether or not there is wind. ha ha ha ;D ;D
Ha! Ha! Ha!  I forgot to ask her if she was going dressed as a "Proper, upright lady," or a "madam" or "painted lady."  I would think it would be cheaper to dress like Calamity Jane.
>:(
Okay Ladies... ( and I use that term very very lightly in this case)
you have both had it..!!
Insinuating that I am a "lady of the evening.." !! :o
And rigging my dress to blow up in front of hundreds of cowboys??

HA HA HA HA HA
I better sneak in and then exit very quickly after posting this.
A SUDDEN GUST OF WIND??? From where???coming from under the garmet...or from the breezes that ripple through the trees?
OOOOHHHHHHH MY...I had better get out of here.
I love you, Tressy...Really I do !!!
THAT IS IT!!!
I am out for revenge for all of you!~~ :police:
I have never been so shocked in all of my born days.!! :o
And by the way.. " I resemble those remarks!" hahaha ;D
Lois....I love your profile picture --- now, if you have to have a passport picture taken, use that one and you will never---NEVER have to worry about someone stealing your identity!!! lol
It is soooooooooo cool -- I love it !!!
Well, thanks, Jo! You are the first person to comment about that. I thought it was rather hilarious myself. In all truthfulness, that picture was taken off of my "Leanin Tree" coffee mug, just in case, no one knew. Don and I were wanting a picture of something that we could attach the name of "genealogynut" to, and we came up with that. If I looked like that in everyday life, I would do more than just run and hide!!!
Hi Danny --- I see you are on here also.
Love you
