Title: Howard High School
Post by: W. Gray on March 06, 2009, 08:58:01 PM

Before West Elk High School came into being around 197X, or so, what was the mascot of Howard High School?

Where were football games played?

Where were basketball games played?

The North Elk High School mascot was a trojan.
The football games were played at the Howard fairgrounds.
The basketball games were played at Severy.
1974 was West Elk High School's first graduating class.

The mascot of Howard High School was the Pirate.  School colors were red and white.  We played football games at the Howard Fairgrounds.  Basketball games were played in the gym at the back of the Howard Grade School.  The last Howard High School graduating class was 1970.  Then Howard and Severy combined into North Elk for three years.  Moline and Grenola combined into South Elk for three years.  The class of 1974 was the first West Elk graduating class that combined all the districts together.

What, or who, played at the area that is now the Howard pool?

My husband thinks it was an area of community softball and/or baseball fields before the swimming pool was built in the 1960s.

In my early days  where the pool is now was the High School football field, I think there was one backstop there and they played adult softball games there also.. Also that is where the Winfield Daily courier dropped the daily papers from the plane. I delivered the Courier for a couple of years, the courier had a plane and dropped the papers every day in a big roll in the middle of the old football field where the Pool is now. The little league field was at the Fairgrounds where the football field is now.

Frank is right about the football field being where the pool is now.  It was a pretty complete athletic setup for it's time.  In addition to the baseball back stop and field it included a 1/2 mile track and a broad jump pit and a pole vault setup.  The baseball field was busy every weekend during the Fifties with both American Legion, and Semi-Pro teams trying to make it to the big playoff's in Wichita every summer.  Some times they did quite well only to get eliminated by one of the big industrial teams (i.e. Cessna or Boeing).
