Early in the morning, before daylight. Bud in my lap. The only light in the house coming from the TV as I catch up on the news and weather. No telephone, no knocks on the door, no traffic noise from outside.
Somewhere between 9:00am and 10:00am Pacific time when I first log on to the Elk County Forum
David
Around 5:00 A.M. while I am reading several Major newspapers on line, checking the London NYMEX and getting ready for a busy day.
I love the aroma of coffee...but will pass on drinking it. Give me a nice tall coke or a hot cup of oolong tea. The hour? Roughly 5:15 A.M., as I'm getting myself around for the day.
I'm up at 5 AM, getting Billy off to work and everything is rushed. Things slow down when he leaves at 6. I sit in the livingroom with hot cocoa and watch KAKE 10. It's so quiet and serene- except for the beautiful crow of our crazy rooster. I wait for the sun to shine through the east windows, and then it's time for chores.
At 3:30 A.M. when I first get up and read the paper on line and check in on the Forum to jumpstart my day.
Just at the crack of dawn.. after I get out of the hot tub.. have my shower..and make myself a cup of hot tea..with a big dollop of heavy cream.. Take it outside set on the porch and listen to the birds wake up and start their gossip and chatter. . Seeing the sun peek over and break into a new beautiful day.
Bright and early morning sounds are much better than what I'm hearing now. The neighbor's dog barking (a mile away) and the coyotes out west of the house. Time for me to tuck in.
I love early mornin, settin out watchin the sun come up with a hot cup of coffee.............(cept for the neighbors 47 friggin dogs that bark every time a knat farts:P) Lol My wolf howls and they shut up lol and it's back to peace and quiet
which is the best cup of coffee? The one just made fresh, hot and folgers, anytime of day or evening. Evening's, however, are reserved for a cup of coffee made fresh from freshly ground Starbuck's beans. The aroma alone would satify me. mmmmmmm
I agree with all of these but the best cup of coffee I ever had
was when I was a newly married and just learning how to drink the stuff
and my husband's family had an aunt I don't remember if third or fourth cousin or what
but she was in his family and
when we went to stay with them for a weekend.
Bell made the best coffee on an old wood stove (that is all she cooked on) and
in the worst coffee pot I had ever seen and she made it without a basket or strainer.
I did not notice if she added an egg to it......but I do remember that you could have ate it with a
fork but that was the best cup of coffee I have ever had.
The closest I came to it was when we were camping and I made coffee in an old perk coffee pot.......that was good
but not as good as Bells.
Boy I think that is where I got my first hair on my chest............Yum Yum!
Thanks for the memories.
Hugs
Judy
i like morning coffe with friends in the cafe in moline and on saturdays in longton to start my day coffe drinkers have some of the best conversations.

QuoteThe closest I came to it was when we were camping and I made coffee in an old perk coffee pot
Boy you are right about campfire coffee Judy, I have an old pot I use and there ain't nothin like a cup of coffee fresh off the campfire when it's a little chilly and the mist ain't burned off yet and it's so quiet it's like you are in church............dang, now I'm gonna have to build a fire in the pit and make some coffee :P
The first drink of coffee around 8 am while I'm booting up my computer... before the e-mails start rolling in and the phone starts ringing. The best whole cup is actually the 2nd cup, around 9:30 with my Grapenuts "stickers", when most of my e-mails are answered and there's a lull in the phone and I can log on to the Forum and catch up a bit. Although, a Saturday morning cup is usually the best... when there's nothing to do but fold laundry and plan the weekend... no computer, no phones... except maybe to call my mom or grandma.
I only drink coffee as a medium for my caffeine, cream, and sugar.
no cream or suger in mine - just Coffee
Many years ago, we had moved into a house and the gas was not turned on yet. I did not have an electric coffee pot, but did have an electric popcorn popper, the kind that was a small kettle and sat on a hotplate type burner. I made creek bank coffee in that thing, and when the gas man did show up, I could see his nose twitching because it smelled so good. I offered him some but he got my furnace going first and then had a cup of that fabulous smelling brew. Boiled coffee is indeed the very best; I have a huge porcelain pot that my dad bought for me one Christmas; it makes the bestest there is. Next is percolated coffee on top of the stove. Glass percolators are the best as they clean easily without the stale taste. But we use an electric drip maker for the ease and the warm holding.
The best cup of coffee is the one at around 2 or 3 am after walking the French Quarter in New Orleans when you stop at Cafe du Monde. Cafe au lait (coffee and chickory) with beignets, I can taste it now. A close second is at around 9 or 10 pm on a very cold night, a flavored coffee and a good book, curled up in the chair in front of the fire.
Jensarlou, you got me thinking. Everyone here mentioned a cup of coffee I would like to have. I am not a coffee aficionado and the cup I mentioned earlier is one that comes from the Arco gas station that I pick up in the morning while taking my dog for a walk before checking in on my forum friends. I started thinking the title is "The Best Cup of Coffee". And my previous post was has now moved to the best cup of coffee I have on a regular basis. I am still thinking about "The Best Cup of Coffee" and it is leaning now towards something more along the lines of your post. I'll have to get back to you on my true best cup of coffee.
David
Obviously, The Best Cup of Coffee can be either the one that tastes the best or the one that you enjoy the most or the one that gives you the best pick-me-up. Or however you feel about it. I have really enjoyed reading all the responses. They kind of give an insight into one's character.
Hey two in a row got me thinking. Wilma you are so right about the insights into a person. Knowing what I know about myself I can see several things that might reveal things about me. This has really turned out to be a great topic. Thanks for starting it.
David
If that's the case...I hate to think about what an addiction to Coca Cola and Oolong tea indicates! lol
Catwoman I am the biggest type of fan of Coca-Cola to the point of obsession almost. Wrote a college paper on it, known for drinking it by family and friends, large round Coke phone that lights up when it rings right next to me, and more Coke memorabilia. Middle age has cut down the amount I drink, but that rare Coke is better than any cup of coffee I have now.
David
Just washed and hung out the bedclothes.......hayed the horses.....played with Boo and Klinger a little....having my 2nd cup of the mornin..........Joe gets to come home a day early........all is right with the world :)
Pam, I have always said that if I should ever become wealthy, one of the luxuries I would have would be someone to wash and line dry my bedblothes every day, and I could crawl into that fresh bed each night! MMMMnnnnnn--I can smell the freshness now! Enjoy! ;)
Lol SDM nothin better than fresh sheets off the line!
I so have been meaning to get my sheets washed, but I have to hang them out and during the week is not possible for me. I am so jealous of you Pam!! I have a washer here at the daycare, but no line :'( :'( :'( And it looks like this weekend it might rain!! :'( :'(

SDM, I am sure if you made that wish to Obama he would put the promise out there that "under my programs I will see that every household will have someone to wash and hang out there bedlinens everyday".
Frank, I did not know that this was a political thread. For damn sure I will never be wealthy in a republican administration. The American people are being sucked dry, and all people like you can do is put everyone down that might, just might make it a little better. I would be willing to bet that you have never washed and line dried your bedsheets, but have spent your life in the pursuit of the almighty dollar. Enough, and I am sorry that this lovely thread got contaminated by this garbage. >:( >:(
Lol, maybe we need some MORE coffee :)
I only have the time cause I got layed off Angie lol, that and my dryer quit last winter and we just never have got another one cause I like hangin it out! Rain sure does mess with the program tho lol. I've got another line I can string down the hall for such emergencies tho, so it's all good :)
Was just thinkin about what was the best TASTin cup of coffee I ever had......I finally broke down and had a cup of starbucks a couple months ago, that stuff was GOOD, white chocolate macadamia espresso kitchen sink somthin or other, but it was probly the best tasting coffee I ever had.
Jens I had coffee on bourbon street once, that was good too. I'd always heard the chicory was too bitter but I liked it.

SDM, I don't think I deserved that, I was just trying to make a little humor as you have done at times. I don't know where you got your information that you think I am rich materlistically as I am not I am rich in family and friends, which I value the most. You know nothing about me and yet you keep slamming me with trash comments. I have spent my life working hard for my family and I am very proud of it, I can assure you that whatever we have we have earned it. I will not try to make any humor with or at you anymore.
Thank you! >:( >:(

This is the kind of thing that keeps many of us from saying who we are. Why should we want to put up with someone like this just because she doesn't like some little post. This is totally uncalled for and the thing that keeps a lot of people off the forum.
I freshly grind Hazelnut coffee beans each morning for Kjell's coffee. He drinks it strong and lots of it. About 3 pots a day :P
But I bought one of those small Black and Decker coffee grinders and you can grind just what you need each morning and even though I don't like the taste of it.. that smell when I am grinding is wonderful.
I wish I liked it................ :'(
Coming from the family I came from where there was ALWAYS a pot of coffee on 24/7, I never acquired a taste for it. I get my morning caffeine jolt from Coca-Cola. I am like David I guess in that I could be called a coke fanatic. If a place only service Pepsi and not coke, I will drink water, and I am either going to have to get a bigger kitchen or quit collecting coca-cola stuff as I am about out of room!!!!
When we lived in West Texas, there was a Mexican restaurant that had coffee beans at the register instead of mints. Everyone always seemed to enjoy them. I sometimes get a few here at home instead of a mint. I love the flavored coffees. We got some at the Red Buffalo in Sedan awhile back. HEB grocery stores in Texas have a wonderful variety of flavored beans, both regular and decaf, I usually kept some one hand. They are nice for a change.
Myrna
My mom and grandma swear that the best coffee is from a Lifetime coffee pot. They heat the water, but don't boil it, and they claim it's less caffeine. Not sure why you'd drink coffee if you didn't want caffeine?!?! Just kidding; sometimes I'll have decaf in the afternoon when it's cold. But I still think that decaf has enough caf in it to keep me up at night!
My "treat" when I'm traveling is Starbucks Skinny Vanilla Latte, if there's one in the area when I'm traveling. I've had the ground coffee that you can make at home, and I really don't see much difference than Folgers, so why pay the extra money. Unless you want the "fancy" flavors.
I normally just like coffee from a coffee pot, but I had some flavored instant coffee packets that were sent in the mail as a sample, and they were GOOD. I think it was Maxwell House; they make the skinny packets for just 1 cup of coffee. Still have to use cream and sugar, though.
Myrna; have you ever tried the chocolate covered coffee beans?
Quotethat smell when I am grinding is wonderful.
Boy it does doesn't it. I always stick my nose down in the can when I first open it just cause it smells so good. My sons mother-in-law sells perfumes and she keeps a bowl of coffee beans on the tables because you can smell the coffee and it keeps all the perfumes from startin to smell alike ( personally, think she oughta bottle the coffee smell lol,I'D buy that one!)
Down in the South, around Beaumont,TX, they have a brand called Community Coffee. It is almost as strong as Arabic coffee, although not nearly as thick in consistency. A lot of people that I know are hooked on the stuff...probably has a higher caffeine content. That stuff, you can smell from a block away...potent!

This works both ways, you know. :D :D
OMG, Tobina, there is a big difference between Folgers and Starbucks. At least the Starbuck Coffee Beans I bought. When I put them in the grinder (think it must be the same kind Teresa has) the aroma is just music to the nostrils. And after it's made into coffee, the aroma of freshly brewed is great and the taste is greater. Because of the costs, tho, I use them just when I NEED a special cup of "pick me up or spoil me" coffee, otherwise Folgers it is. ;D I, personally, have never had a cup in a regular Starbucks coffee shop.
I have never had a cup of Starbuck's. Period. I'm not particular about my coffee. How good it is, is based on the situation. The worst cup of coffee could be the best if shared with a good friend. Actually, I used to use Folger's exclusively, but one day I compared the price of it with another brand and took the other brand home. It proved to be just as good and not quite so acid, which was good for my tummy.
OK, Flo; I accept your invitation to test your fresh-ground Starbucks against Folgers. What time? Do I need to bring my own cream and sugar? ;) ;D ;D
I told you my best cup of coffee in an earlier post. N ow I must tell you my favorite cup of coffee is over conversation with a friend or friends. Being odd man out I prefer Maxwell House over Folgers. I do agree politics should stay in politics. Don't let 'em get you down SDM.
Thanks GG, I hereby invite you for a good cup of Folgers coffee! :D :D That is just our preference from the grocery, but it will probably be what we can afford to drink if the cost still keeps going up. Once in a great while, I buy from Starbucks at KU Med center, but they have another coffee bar called Jazzmans in the cardiac portion of the hospital with New Orleans style coffee; I like everything about it except the price. But, (and this is a secret), if you get to know the nurses real well, they will fix you a cup of their gourmet coffee. Just one of their perks. :D :D
Oh, I remember another great cup(s) of coffee I had once when I was in the Turner Enterprises offices in Atlanta, GA. It was made by one of those "pod" machines. Where you choose a flavor/type of coffee you want and put the "pod" in the machine, and then it pressed (?) the coffee out and fit perfectly into a cup. I drank a LOT of coffee that day!
I just bought 4 cans of Maxwell House (2 lb. 2.5 oz.) at $5.99 a can. If folgers is the cheapest at the time that is what I buy. I use to buy a lot of Butternut, but can't find it anymore. Can you tell I just like coffee? ;)
SDM, maybe you can answer this for me. When Lewis was in KU Med. (K.C.) I had all my meals in the cafeteria, and would take a few minutes to just people watch. There was a coffee bar in there that so many people, mostly I would guess 20's and 30's, that used it. There were all kinds of carafes' of what looked like coffee when they poured it in their cups, and then bottles of "flavors". What kind of coffee were they drinking? It wasn't Cappaccinno because there was one of those machines also. I do like Cappaccino, however, but was too embarressed to ask what the other was :-[ . Didn't want to appear like I just fell off a turnip truck coming thru town. ;D
Wilma; this has been a FUN thread! Thanks for having such a good idea! We need more of these light-hearted threads (at least until the election is over and people chill out a bit). :P
Flo, I know what you mean about feeling like a hick from hicksville. However if you will listen to people when they come up to the bar at Starbucks, the majority order just plain coffee; the fancy stuff seems to be a little passe. That may be the reason for the closing of so many Starbucks across the nation. They do tend to take themselves alittle more seriously than they are worth. Now you have to go to Quick Trip to get all the flavors to put into your coffee. They now have more ways to ruin a good cup of coffee than I would ever want to try. I like a good strong cup of black coffee, but once in awhile, I do like to float a huge dollop of whipped cream on top. Yum! ;) ;)

Hmmmm... maybe this is an Atlanta thing? This is the same type of machine(s) that we have in our school, here in Atlanta. It's an awesome machine, with an awesome cup of coffee. We have 15 flavors to pick from. The machine is by flavia, and makes the PERFECT cup of coffee, everytime.
I like it so much that I bought a Flavia machine for home, as well. If you are really interested, you can go to http://www.myflavia.com
I have one. Just sold it at my garage sale as Kjell likes to use a Bunn ( its fast) and he preferred fresh ground beans. so I had no more need for it. I also have one for Tea.. of which I use. The are really nice..especially in the winter when I drink a lot of hot tea.
When Kjell needs "comfort coffee" he ask me to make it. I make the coffee.. add to his bigger than normal cup 2 huge scoops of the hazelnut cappuccino mix along with about a jigger shot of heavy whipping cream. I mix, and using a whip, beat this until kinda frothy. Then I slowly add the coffee stirring all the while. Then I take the cans of whipped cream in a can and spray a big dollop on the top. ( sometimes ..if he is being a good boy........ ;) I add one chocolate chip to the top of that. )
Can't get any better "comfort coffee" than that. :)
I make it like that when we all play Pinochle. Becky Oakleaf says it is the best in the world and is like having dessert. LOL
James Athearn Folger traveled from Massachusetts to California via the Isthmus of Panama when he was fourteen. He found an isolated pocket of gold, which helped him to get started with the Folger's Coffee Company in San Francisco.
I have never drunk a cup of coffee in my life. I sipped a little when I was younger but hated the taste.
I occasionally drink tea if the wife makes sun tea.
However, the Coca Cola company does know my name. I open the computer up each morning with a diet coke nearby.
I can recall in the late fifties when the soda companies began pitching their product as a twenty-four hour drink. I got started about that time.
Dr. Pepper had an advertising campaign at that time, which promoted drinking hot Dr. Pepper in a coffee cup in the morning. Never tried it but remember a representative coming to the store and providing free samples to customers. They also had a slogan on their bottle that said 10, 2, and 3, as a suggested time to have a Dr. Pepper.
Dr. Pepper used to have a clock on their label with just the numbers 10,2 &4 on it. The little Dr. Pepper sodas they had when I was a kid were just soooo good! Them and the little Grapettes!
Grapettes were our favorite!!!
now singing in my bestest voice "Dr pepper is the friendly peper upper" small tap dance and thank you bow
And chocolate soldiers! Yum! ;D
There was also Orangette.
Grapette and Orangette were the only two "ettes" I was aware of but we had a local carbonated bottler in Independence, Mo, whose product was Polly's Pop. All different flavors--and it was the real flavoring from the fruit, not like the artificial flavoring of today.
You can still buy soda pop in gourmet stores with the real fruit stuff, but it costs an arm and a leg.
Since we've turned the coffee thread into a soda thread... I remember that my grandma used to have a soda machine where you would add your own flavors to the bottle and then the machine would make it carbonated and cap it off. I think you had to wait a day for the flavor to really come out before you could drink it, though. It seemed longer when you're a kid.
In the grocery store that I worked at one could buy orange or grape or whatever flavor syrup by the bottle--I seem to recall it was a gallon glass bottle.
Then one buy a jug of carbonated water and go home and mix your own.
They did not sell very well.
You can still buy flavored syrups...but they're a pretty penny...still worth it, though.
When I worked at Toot's years ago, the big thing was Strawberry Mountain Dew. I think alot of the kids still drink it today!!
Ok since this is now about soda. My all time favorite has got to be cherry limeade. I had never had one till I moved to KS, but Julie makes the best at the drug store. You just don't find it down here in FL very often. Occaisionally at a Sonic but unfortunatly we don't have one near by me. Not to mention they are not really as good as they are up there. Patrick maybe you can get Julie to send me the instructions for the base she uses when making Cherry Limeade. Catwoman the Community coffee you refered to in an earlier post is made right in New Orleans. I have family that actually works for Folgers but won't drink anything but Community. :) They have one they call "New Orleans Blend", it has the chickory in it. Community itself is quite a popular brand all throughout the deep south.
Well, we use old fashioned simple syrup. I don't think you want to know how much sugar is involved. You put a whole pound of sugar per each cup of water and bring to a boil. Fresh squeezed lime juice, carbonated water and cherry syrup. They are quite tasty!
The best cup of coffee always goes with a wonderful dessert or at least a candy bar.............

Julie and Patrick work hard to make that soda counter a memorable experience for the patrons...it's one of the things I miss about Howard!
Picture this. Bud on my lap. A cup of hot coffee at my lips. Bud nudges the cup. This cup of coffee was on me.
Wilma, Little Man does that to me all the time. I always have coffee stains on my nightgown, making it look like I cannot hit my mouth. :D :D
I enjoy my cupa Peet's House Blend coffee sitting on the patio watching the dust and road runners blow by.
