OK, since we have PEP's undivided attention (as well as his "keeper" who lurks on here to keep track of him)...
I thought I'd like to start a thread about what's on my grocery list that I cannot get at Family Market and must go to the dreaded W* store to purchase (or Dillons)... Maybe the powers-that-be might take these items into account (within reason) as they expand the Family Market dynasty.
Silk Chocolate Milk (the big one)
Lactaid Milk 1%
Hamburger and Hotdog buns other than just Thursdays
Frozen yogurt ice cream (or put this in the soda fountain/ice cream shoppe)
Baked Lays (BBQ)
Vanilla coffee creamer - liquid - Coffee Mate, Fat Free

LOL i can't afford to buy groceries.
Prices are far too high at family market for me to shop there. I just have to go once a month to wichita and get a months supply at a time at aldies or some other cheaper stores. Walmart isn't so cheap anymore. :(
Steve, they have Aldis in Bartlesville also, a little bit closer than Wichita.
I buy everything from Family Market. What I can't get there, I get at Dillion's where they will take double coupons as well as expired ones.
The only thing I buy from WalMart is fabric, and even now it's getting so high that I can get it on ebay much cheaper. I did buy plants there last month because they were all on clearance and I wanted to plant a rosebush in memory of my step-father. I also buy my shampoo from WalMart, Infusium 23 because Family Market does not carry it.
I bought Billy's razor blades from Family Markey last week and nearly cried when I saw the price. $21.76 for Gillette Mach something or other. I didn't feel so bad after his mother told me they cost close to the same at Dillon's. Needless to say, he will be switching razor's as soon as we can find something to suit his sensitive skin.
I have shopped the big W (get my exercise just looking for what I want, Dillons, Aldi's (make sure you have a quarter for your cart and take your sacks), all those places. The prices at Family Market are comparable, especially with the fuel prices and time involved to go somewhere else. As for frozen yogurt, I have bought it at Family Market. I understand that they cannot carry each and every item that is everyone's own special preferance. If you have to buy in lots, and it doesn't all sell, then that is a lost money item for the store. It is locally owned and operated and they can't stand a lot of that. As it is, I am sure they have fresh produce and etc. that spoils before it sells. Personally I like shopping here. Can usually find what I want and if I have to buy another brand, I do. I have never had an "Our Family" item that was poor quality. I prefer Duncan Hines cake mixes, especially when I am making a decorated cake for a special order. Simply because that is what I always used. I can't get them here so me and Betty Crocker are forming a relationship. As for Aldi's, their canned veggies are mostly alright and soups are okay for casseroles but forget their coffee, soaps, paper products, and most anything else they have. YUK . Thanks but no thanks. I WILL SHOP MY HOMETOWN GROCERY. You quit buying here, and there goes the convenience of shopping at home. Plus, I like the friendly service you get at home. ;D

Good luck with that DL. That's the normal price for the Mach 3 blades, and that's what we use. We've tried several others to see how they work, but nothing is as easy on the skin ~ at least not that I've found. If you discover something, I'd appreciate it if you let me know! :)

All good thought Flo! The prices really are more comparable that you might think, and it's so much easier to get things, run home & put groceries away without devoting a whole day to it! If I'm going out of town, I want it to be a fun trip; not hours fighting crowds, unhelpful employees and ginormous parking lots.
So far, the only Our Family thing I didn't care for was the black olives, and I just get the name brand.
I can't think of anything right now I can't find at Family Market, except maybe a wild rice mix that I especially like... and of course I always want some fresh vegetable that is out of season... it's how my mind works.
I miss stuff off and on, but generally can find most of what I need. I"m going up later today to see if they have ginger ale though, need some for a punch recipe for a baby shower on Saturday.
When we still lived up there I did a lot of my grocery shoppin at Morrows just cause I knew if the grocery store went under everybody else wouldn't last long either :P Sure enough. The meat was a lot better than you got anywhere else too.
We live so far from town now tho that there isn't any hometown store lol. So I just go where the best deals are cause it's gonna be at least a 35 mile round trip no matter where I go :P So support em if you got em cause you sure miss em when ya don't!
I do all my shopping here in town. Very few times in the last year have I ever bought out of town groceries. If I do, the dollar store or G and W and that other Eureka store. But it was just a few things that I needed and nothing that I couldn't get here. I just happened to be there and picked somethings up. As for Walmart, I am not sure when the last time I went there was. I bought all the girls school supplies here in town, they didn't need any new clothes for school (they have tons of clothes), and we are on a budget. With the trips that we had to make the past months to Wichita, we can't afford to spend any more money on gas than needed. And I will be one to say that I love the store here. If they don't have something, just ask, they might be able to get it. And they are really friendly. Ok, just don't have PEP check you out, (HaHa)!! No, we, Elk county are very lucky to have the Family Market. I love it!!!
I do love Batson's, too. So that's the point of this thread... to give them suggestions for food or non-food items that they might consider carrying to help us be able to shop there even more!
::) ::) Oh, Okay, Duncan Hines cake mixes then. ;D

|Uhmm before i would pay that much for razor blades, i would quit shaving
A lot of men consider those Gillette blades a shaving revolution, including myself.
The Mach 3 has three blades mounted in the same cartridge so that you are shaving with three blade edges at the same time. These are not the normal size razor blade but three small mini blades mounted very closely together in a self contained cartridge.
The Fusion is an improvement and has five blades mounted in the same cartridge.
While five may sound like overkill, I can tell the difference between three and five blades.
It is almost a pleasure to shave nowadays.
Gillette has acknowledged they are charging a premium of something like 30%.
Mach 3 costs more but they last much longer. If you think you're saving money at Dillons, you sure aren't going to the one in Augusta.
A Batson's dream list, eh? OK!
Splenda in the large bag (we go through one a month)
Millstone coffee (French roast ...woo hoo!) either whole bean or with a grinder
Tyson Southern-style breast fillets or patties
Bob Evans ground sausage (if you haven't tried this, it's wonderful!)
French bread
Murphy's Oil Soap (although Cookson's may carry it ... I haven't needed any lately)
Simply Jif peanut butter
Low-Sodium V-8 in individual serving size
Ah...but here's the piece-de-resistance: Batson's is the ONLY store I've been to in Kansas in the last 8 years that I've been able to find Totino's sausage pizza. Also, last winter, when we were still commuting, my skin was so dry I couldn't stand it, so I bought a bottle of Jergen's lotion...first time I'd used it in years, and I have to say it's now a favorite. Finally, I've recently re-started wearing contacts and my lenses require a special cleanser, which Julie special ordered and will keep an extra bottle on hand for me. So I do thank you, Julie and PEP!!!! You guys are awesome.
My grocery list:
Flour Potaoes
Sugar Bread
Yeast on occasion Butter
Baking Powder Margarine
Milk Cocoa
Vegetables (canned or fresh) Ground Pepper
Fruit (canned or fresh) Maybe some meat
Powdered Sugar
Milk
Shortening
Gosh!!!!!!! Family Market has it all.
Ihope you remember how licky you are to have it !
Buy everything you can there. Remember what Rudy said about saying I canbuy it cheaper at ---------!

LOL i can't affod dillons either. which is kroger stores. :( They are high.
What really bites is i usually only have maybe 100 dollars a month left to buy groceries for the month. So prices are a big deal. I can get much more other places including the gaas to get there than i can here locally. Now sometimes they get a good deal there. But one big thing that i can't do is buy in bulk on items i use through the month at batsons. I can at aldies, or even sams if i get to go there.
Steve, you need to get to canning those gookies from your garden.

i was trying to this year but i never could get any jars. :(
I dried some green beans and am drying my tomatos and pretty much eating what okra i can out of what i pick but will end up tossing most of it to the chickens i guess.
Heck the okra is the only thing that survived these bugs out here
They razed everything but the okra.
I don't use sevin as my stuff is organically grown.
IF i can get my garden tilled again soon, which i doubt due to rain :( i'll plant a fall garden.
I agree wholeheartedly with Steve. I buy at Aldi's or Sav-A-Lot. I have 3 kids that like to eat me out of house and home. I went to Walmart the other day to get stuff to make lasagna and spent over $50!! I do buy stuff at Longton Grocery too tho. I get milk and ice cream and bread, etc. and trust me they get their fair share from me! But I believe in buying in bulk, it's cheaper and I only go major grocery shopping once a month too. There's absolutely nothing wrong with the food from the "lower price" stores. It all comes from the same place, just has different labels. NAME BRANDS=HIGHER PRICES!
>:(
Julie told me to be nice...
First of all. Who ever thinks they can drive anywhere and buy anything cheaper than the amount family market sells for go right ahead and try. We shopped at Aldi for over a year stocking the store before we started getting trucks in. If you think you can go out of town and save big money buying 100 dollars at at time you obviously didn't have very good math skills as a youth. Even with gas down to $3.50 a gallon the closest Bentonville black hole is in Winfield 45 miles from here. You are thrifty so you probally don't have a brand new volkswagon at 50 miles to the gallon so let's assume that you get about 10-12 miles to the gallon. That means not counting your time or any thing else like wear and tear on the vehicle you are spending $18.00 before you even by a gummy bear. That means that I can charge 17% more that them and still save you money. I challenge any one to fill a grocery cart at both stores and compare apples to apples and find how much we are gouging you.
I would also say that our meat department has an entire grade better meat than the distribution cut, cryovac sealed with nitrogen to prevent color change, is still cheaper per pound. They sell select cuts. We sell choice or better. We have the ability to cut you 2" thick steaks if you want. Grind your hamburger in 10lb containers.
Our produce as small as it is right now is still better quality than the Aldi version. Find a cheaper head of lettuce.
Don't even get me started on milk. Bring me a gallon of milk for under $4. I will bet you it dates two days before the date on the jug. Because you brought it home in a 134 degree vehicle for an hour. Coolers only work so well.
As for the grocery list we try to get any and all things that we have available. Some of the mentioned items we have had before but didn't sell...Silk has a very short shelf life. Strawberries hate hot weather. We haven't been able to install misters on the produce as we are going to expand the area if someone will get off the computer long enough to swing a hammer. All the dry goods can be ordered but what do you want to get rid of. We have limited space if we add something new we must get rid of something old. Bread.....We have had more overstocked bread in the last two weeks than we have pills. We even had black bread. We have Earthgrains truck in every Friday. If you like soft squeezable bread then come in Friday afternoon or Saturday. If you like the crusty stuff we have it all the time. If it is not out we probably have more in the back.
Pepsi and Coke have deals with the big box stores that I can't buy even close to what they sell retail for. Even when we have it on sale it will always be cheaper somewhere else.
Did you know there are King Crab legs in the freezer?
Would you like to shop on Sunday?
Would you like to shop later hours?
One last note.....Bring me the receipt the next time you get a soda fountain sized ice cream cone somewhere out of town....I bet I can buy a gallon of gas with the difference.
We have always given full case discounts. Try that at Kroger....
I agree on many of your points, PEP. The ONLY time we shop out of town is if we're going to be there for an appointment, church, etc. We never make a trip just for grocery shopping. It costs us $20 for a round trip to Wichita, which means we've already spent any savings we might find there. And what we do buy at Dillons (we do NOT shop at Wal-Mart on principle) are things we can't get here (refer back to my "wish list"), and would gladly purchase if we could.
The beef sold here is by far some of the best we've ever had. The ground beef and steaks are flavorful and less expensive than that sold in OOT stores. We're very pleased!
The same is true for the milk. When we lived in Wichita, we'd have milk in the fridge spoil before the Xdate on the jug....that's never happened here.
T and I have been buying the rye and black bread, and really like the cracked wheat variety. Does the company offer French or Italian? Understandably, there's a shelf life issue if demand isn't high for these items, but we'd buy them regularly if they were available.
As for Sunday hours, you guys need a day off, too! There has been only one instance when I needed something on a Sunday -- Jiffy cornbread mix -- and I was amazed to find it at P&J's! I guarantee QuikTrip doesn't carry cornbread mix!
Overall, we "big city" transplants are more than satisfied with our grocery shopping options here, and we commend the Perkins for all their efforts. The store is more convenient, has comparable prices (and in some cases, cheaper and in no way "gouging") and it doesn't take all day to do the shopping. Life in Howard is good!
I have to agree with PEP, I have filled up many of shopping carts at Family Market. Sometimes I think that they hate to see me coming. I do buy for a daycare, which I feed daily about 30 meals. I do get money to cover the cost of food for the daycare and the meals that I serve. And when I get my check each month, I still have money left over from what I spend at Family Market. I understand that you have a budget, so do most everyone out there these days. (If they don't they have more money that most people around here). If you buy bulk, I buy cases of veggies at a time and fruits, they come to equal around .50 a can. I haven't seen can goods that cheap in a while. As for the meat, I really don't buy much meat at all besides lunch meat and such. We have our own meat, which is better than anywhere, (Sorry PEP but we raise it and it's just GOOD!!) Now, about the produce, great selections. If, again, they don't have what I need I just ask. Usually they can get it, it might even be out of season but they try. I am not trying to be mean about shopping other places, I used to do it to. But I just can't see that anything is cheaper other places. I have filled up 2 carts at the Family Market and been under or just a little over 100.00. I think that is pretty darn good!!! Of course, my budget is a little higher than most for food. But not to many people can feed around 10-12 kids a day, 5 days a week as cheap as what I do, and still have money left to pay the bills. I fix really nice meals for my kids at the daycare. Breakfast, lunch (meat, 1 veggie, 1 fruit, bread item, and milk. I usually through something else on the plate to make it a full plate), and 1 or even 2 snacks a day. They get homemade bread or cinnamon rolls at least once a month.
Ok, a grocery list to see what Family Market needs to add. Let's see, if they don't have what I need I just ask while I am there. Julie or about anyone of the people that work there will try to get right on the computer and see if they can get it. And if they can, it usually can be there the next day or with in a week. Tobina, I really don't have any suggestions, since if its something I need I usually just ask right then and there. I just feel that I needed to speak the truth and my mind above. ;D ;D
I was hoping and waiting for someone else to touch on this, but here goes.
When's the last time:
Dillons bid on a 4-H steer?
Wal-mart helped the high school band buy uniforms?
You saw the manager of Aldi at a Howard Chamber of Commerce meeting or helping the Lions clean up the old school grounds?
Remind me again how much Target donated to the clock tower project?
A key to community development is to support your local businesses, because they are the ones that support you!!!!!
The few times that I am back in Moline for more than a day, Angie and I go to Family Market to get the small amount of food we'll need while we're there. And we have never felt "gouged." Sure a few things might appear to be a little higher, but if you price checked any 50 common items, any difference between Family Market and other "out of town" stores would be negligible.
Very well said Charlie.
I buy every single grocery item I buy from Family Market and feel fortunate to be able to do so. It is such a blessing in our town. Even when I go to Wichita (my wife is there every day) or anywhere else with a Wal-Mart, Dillons, Target, etc..I go right on by. I feel like there is still a lack of support for our fine store by many of the local townspeople, but maybe those that haven't will come around.
you know, groceries aren't the only things you can buy in Howard. I still kick myself in the butt every day. When I sold my house in Severy, I sold it with the appliances. Went to Eureka and bought all new (Stove, frig, dishwasher, washer and dryer) and had them delivered to my new home in Howard. THEN I find out that I could have gotten all these things at Cookson's Hdw. Had I known that, I sure would have. Since moving to Howard anything I can get at Mark's, I do. Don't use a lot of "big" items, but maybe my measly purchases help a little. Matter of fact sometime today I hope to get down there and see if he has a weed eater. Mine refuses to start. Meanwhile I'm getting ready to decorate a cake for Joanna's baby shower ( ;D one she's giving) so better get off here and get busy. Have a good day everyone.
OK PEOPLE. STOP AND READ. AND QUIT BEING SO DEFENSIVE!!!
I simply asked if there were suggestions for Batson's/Family Market as they expand their store. I didn't say the things they had were bad, or Walmart has them better. What are they going to do with that new space; store boxes? No, they are expanding to make it a better store with a better shopping experience!
If I were them, I would sit back and take notes instead of being so defensive about this all. How many times do you get the chance to simply ask your customers WHAT would make their shopping experience better? My opinion is that ANY business who doesn't want feedback from their customers, won't be in busines for long!
I HATE having to go to Walmart to buy things... but there are certain things that I cannot get at Batson's, and there isn't anything they carry that can be a subsitute. So, I figured that they might appreciate this opportunity to find out what things they might consider carrying to make me buy more there!?
PEP, I would also caution you to do some research before you post. I have two gallons of Silk Chocolate milk in my fridge that I bought 2 weeks ago... and the expiration date is 10/5/08. And instead of being so defensive, why not just post your delivery information on here? Let us know when the milk and bread comes in. The last 3 times I have gone to the store, there have been no hamb or hotdog buns on the shelf; so I was unable to buy. So, if you have more in the back, then STOCK THEM. I don't have time to ask for every single item I want.
accept my apology, Tobina. I read your original post as a complaint because you couldn't get the things you wanted at Family Market.
"Ask and you shall receive"?
I just got back from town to grab a few items at Family Market... and lo and behold, what did I find? Our Family French Vanilla creamer - liquid! And beautiful, fresh strawberries! And I also noticed a huge bag of Splenda, Indygal!
My apologies to Patty that he wasn't taking notes... or at least someone at the store was. Or maybe it was just coincidence since earlier in the week when I was there. My point is (and always was) that we are lucky to have a wonderful, home-owned grocery and pharmacy who is WILLING to listen to their customers and try and provide the items that they request.
So, again, let's start over... if you have an item that you'd like them to consider stocking... feel free to post it here, since I'm sure Patty, et al, will be watching (and quietly taking notes). ;)
... But I still didn't see any Silk Chocolate Milk! That's OK, you have at least a week before Chuck gets down the 2 gallons I have left... ;)
QuoteAnd I also noticed a huge bag of Splenda, Indygal!
Sweet!
(Pun intended)
I just guess that living most of my adult life where there was no grocery store, I have learned to make do and cook around what I do have. I've gotten pretty good at learning about subsitutes. I'm talking about when you don't have baker's chocolate when you're already in the middle of making that cake. Some canned milk in the cabinet is a good thing. If they don't have it when I go to the store, just makes me a bit more flexible. DON'T GET MAD AT ME, PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!! ;) ;) ;) ;)

ROTFL my old 68 ford pickup gets at least 18 - 20 mpg. But maybe thats because i don't drive fast. I think i got passed by Dean Ward one day. But that isn't here nor there. Since i don't drive in big cities, i get a ride up town and since you can't buy everything you need in howard or severy or eureka, i wait til i have to go to wichita.

Well lets see. examples are simple. I can get a can of tuna for .56 cents at aldis or even walmart. .85 cents is what yall charge the last time i looked.
You do have milk fairly reasonable there, but i can beat the price on milk and I can beat y'alls freshness. :D
I think it costs around 1.80 for a gallon of milk and its fresh every morning.
Since i can't afford meat, I don't buy it. :) Beef has gotten out of my price range. I raise chickens to eat, and get my eggs pretty much free. Want to get a pig and raise it for food. Wrong time to buy one now though.
I'll get me as many deer this eyar as possible, and eat that during the year so that will save me on meat costs ;)
I buy beans in bulk, i buy my wheat from the co-op for 9.00 per hundred and grind it myself which makes my flour .09 cents a pound or .45 cents a 5 pound bag. :) I can probably get my sugar from the co-op also for about 1/4 the price they sell it in the store.
Produce, i live without. I am working on a greenhouse right now and hopefully will have my tomatos growing up through jan. Mabye can grow my lettuce and greens and other things in there too.
You do have some good prices on somethings. Theres a roll sausage thats pretty reaosnable. CHeese is out of sight. Can't afford that kind of price for cheddar. I can make 2 pounds of mozzerella for 2 bucks. Not sure why cheese has gone so high these days. No reason for it to go that high. (Not your fault i know)
I make my own bread and started doing so when bread went up to 1.30 a loaf at walmart. i won't pay that much when i can make it for less than .50 cents.
I don't drink pepsi or coke very often, thank God. I just buy when i get to walmart about 10.00 of sams cola in the 2 liter at .67 cents a bottle and store it. Shrug lasts me forever. My biggest luxury treat that i get is specialty tea that no one but a tea shop carries.
As far as frozen seafood goes, ewwwww :(
QuoteOne last note.....Bring me the receipt the next time you get a soda fountain sized ice cream cone somewhere out of town....I bet I can buy a gallon of gas with the difference.
Now its nice to be able to get a ice cream cone in the summer. :)
Look, not knocking what you got. I just can't afford it. IF i could i would go there since it is convenient. :) When you only have 100 bucks to get the few things you need you gotta go where you can get it the cheapest.
Hey pep, does batsons buy local producers products? Like would they buy eggs??
what about cabrielle? or rabbit? Hmm I am going to start up hives hopefully next year and hopefully will haev some honey to sell too.
Wow! Srkruzich, you sound busier than anyone I know! You should be an inspiration to us all to get back to basics, but I find myself exhausted even thinking about all that you must do in a day. I mean, I 'get' making your own bread, but grinding your own flour!?! That's impressive.
I hope that if someone gets a place started where they could hold classes (like I've been told the Extension office used to) that maybe you could give a seminar on making your own cheese. That is really something I'd like to learn!
[If the Extension office still does do classes; well, they need to promote/advertise it 'cause I never hear about anything... Okay, I don't get in there much, but I read the paper from front to back most weeks and don't hear about anything like that]
BTW, what's "cabrielle"?
BACK TO THE TOPIC! (sorry Tobina, for the lapse :-[)
DEAN's Guacamole (I need a brand that's nut free for my DIL's allergie issues)
Jim Beam... Oh shoot! Guess it's been a really long week!
QuoteHey pep, does batsons buy local producers products?
We bought Bellar's sweet corn at Family Market.
Ok, so you have finally sucked me in. :D No longer to be just a guest but someone with a real user name and password. I have enjoyed most of the input and am ALWAYS willing to try my best to stock everything that people will buy. I have wanted to put up a suggestion box for years but didn't ever think I would get much response so this electronic version is AWESOME. Thank you to Teresa and Kjell for this forum which is such an excellent asset to our county and beyond!!
I'll start at the top of the thread. Silk Chocolate milk. I have carried it in the small carton and it didn't sell fast enough before it expired. Minimun order is 12. I will order the big ones and see how it goes this time. (We special ordered low fat sour cream and are having a hard time selling it but would like to continue to carry, so if anyone prefers that, we have it)
Lactaid-we also carried but it was almost twice as expensive as Vitamite so we started carrying that. i don't drink either so don't know how the taste compares. If I have enough demand for the Lactaid, I will definitely carry.
Bread, buns, etc. -bread truck comes only once weekly on Thursdays. The problem is we must order for the next week on the same day he delivers (a week in advance). So you see, if we have lots of bread sold one week, it will take 2 weeks to get caught back up. If bread kept longer I would order more. See the dilemma. for the last 2 weeks I have been overstocked on hamburger and hotdog buns. Can't get rid of them. There is no way to tell how sales will be from week to week so I just do the best I can. I'll keep trying.
Baked Lays BBQ- (delicious aren't they)-Because the store is not big enough yet for what we are trying to accomplish, FritoLay has a hard time fitting such a large selection in the small chip area that we have. I will put in a request to start carrying these again.
If the Our Family vanilla coffee creamer is not to your liking or you really want the fat free, let me know and I'll get it also.
Infusium 23 shampoo-neither my grocery vendor or my drug vendor carry, but we'll be getting a new drug vendor in October because the old one got bought out by a larger company. So they may have a larger selection. Stay tuned.
I will see what I can do on the razor prices. They are terribly expensive. How is that electric one working? PEP hates his electric one. (maybe I shouldn't admit that he doesn't like something that is electric. :o.) Nivea lotion packets-probably can get, need UPC#.
Duncan Hines-I can get 9 different flavors. Name your poison. :P
Will work on the frozen yogurt thing too. Freezer space is so limiting but I'll try.
Wild rice Mix-certain brand? UPC's always belp so I can make sure I order the right thing.
Millstone whole bean french roast will be in soon.
Tyson Southern style fillets-will need UPC-too many tyson chicken products in catalog to know for sure.
Sorry no luck on Bob Evans sausage. Can't get Bob Evans anything :'(
French bread- we already carry Earthgrains brand on the bottom shelf of bread rack. It's not a bigger seller for some reason. We also have the Rotella brand which you slice yourself. (what we really need is a bakery!!!!!! MMMMMM!!!!)
We can get Murphy Oil soap but I think Cookson's surely already carries.
Simply Jif Peanut Butter-coming soon
Low Sodium V8-coming soon
I hope I didn't miss any of the suggestions.
We do sell just about anything by the case and charge only 10% over cost. Special orders cost me (or you) no more than a regular order. (and we'll carry it to your car for you.)
I want to express a huge THANK YOU to those of you who do a majority of your shopping at our store! It will continue to get better an better the more everyone shops here. If more people buy the more we can grow. (Not meaning all of our waistlines)
More selection! More choices! Since we put in the groceries we have had an overwhelming amount of customer appreciation for what we have done and it makes the huge remodeling loan feel almost worth it. Thanks to Howard State Bank for believing in us. (Does it sound to anyone else that I just won a Grammy?)
I remind you that 1% of your local purchases, no matter which local store, goes to county sales tax which in turn comes back to you through our local government projects.
Your purchases also help provide 11 jobs to local people.
The more our county starts working together, the better we all will be for many years to come. When we support each other, we grow stronger together. We all need each other!
So keep the ideas coming. Stay tuned for new products. Any health and beauty items we need to add? Any other suggestions?

Well THANK YOU julie.
Wow... Is she on top of things or what? :o
Now listen folks.. You can not get ANY one at ANY Walmart to give you personal input like that. And I don't know of any big chain store that will go out of their way to try so very hard to please and to stock what you want.
You can't beat it!
I for one am so proud of our grocery store with all the items that we have. And I realize that some of you are on very very limited incomes..and that is understandable that you have to make that dollar stretch as far as you can. We all do in many ways and areas.
but the most part of why I am so proud of Julie is that fact that "we sucked her into our web".. (http://www.cascity.com/howard/animations/conive.gif)
Welcome Julie.. and you are doing a hell of a good job.

Wow! Srkruzich, you sound busier than anyone I know! You should be an inspiration to us all to get back to basics, but I find myself exhausted even thinking about all that you must do in a day. I mean, I 'get' making your own bread, but grinding your own flour!?! That's impressive
Its not that time consuming! You grind it before you use it. Keep the wheat in its own natural storage containers and i can store the wheat in 2 liter bottles indefinately if i use a piece of dry ice in the top as i cap it down.
But it only takes about 5 - 10 min to grind up the wheat with a hand crank grinder.
QuoteI hope that if someone gets a place started where they could hold classes (like I've been told the Extension office used to) that maybe you could give a seminar on making your own cheese. That is really something I'd like to learn!
Well i am no expert on it. Mozzerella is pretty easy if you don't mess up on the amount of acetic acid i think is what we use and overheat it. Cheddar though i want to make, just hvaen't been able to do it yet
Quote[If the Extension office still does do classes; well, they need to promote/advertise it 'cause I never hear about anything... Okay, I don't get in there much, but I read the paper from front to back most weeks and don't hear about anything like that]
True, thats one of the functions i got used to back in Georgia. I could go in for classes on just about anything.

Responding to Julie's post:
Julie, the people in Howard and the surrounding area are very fortunate to have someone as accomodating as you are. The Forum has provided an excellent opportunity for all of you, to "communicate" what you would like to have available. I think it was Danny Cookson (? ? ?) who reminded everyone of how much local businesses do to support your local activities! And, as Julie stated, the taxes that are paid to the City/County from the sales at the local businesses are what keeps the economy going. So, I am just writing from the view of someone who no longer lives in the area, but I do care about what happens there, and, you are all so very lucky to have a local grocery store, Pharmacy, Hardware Store, and all of the other local businesses! Again, I would say........"Support your local businesses!"

Me.... I hop on over to Sun City to Trader Joe's (the best grocery store on the planet) twice a month to do my shopping.
My grocery list as follows:
ground turkey
gound pork
(don't eat red meat if I can help it)
pinto beans
(for my famous chili)
greek yogurt (thick)
cream cheese
goat cheese
Milk, gal. 1%
dried pumpkin seeds
low sod. almonds
dried cranberrys
pine nuts
pkg large shrimp
Salmon, wild
Cod, Icelandic
6pack rogue dead guy ale
6pack stella artois beer
pkg. romine
2 pkg. baby lettuce
olive oil (extra virgin)
soy crackers
stevia
lemon curd
bananas
fugi apples
blueberries (for
my protein shakes)
broccoli
zucchini
Then... from T.Joes to Bashas' in Sun City West for my Peets coffee (bkft.blend) and 4 bear claws... by this time my butts dragging and can't wait to get home and drink a cool one.

Every town in our area, even Independence, would die to have a store so nice, complete and professionally staffed as Batson's Drug and the Family Market. Jenny (editor and manager of the Flint Hills Express) and I walked through the store two weeks and she expressed elation at what she saw. She lives in Independence and they have nothing like it.
Just seeing how Julie responded to requests should make everyone do all their shopping there. She will tailor the store for you, folks! How dare anybody drive 50 to 60 miles away so you can save a few dollars at Wal-Mart!
Hey, I'm also glad to see some red blooded intelligence emerging from the Perkins' computer. We were beginning to think pepelect's computer was a smart aleck. Now we know it's just the person moving the mouse and pounding the keys.
Welcome aboard, Julie.
Make pepelect get his own computer. That one is giving you a bad rap.
Devyn, speaking of decorating . . . I collect angels and have so many that I have dropped down to "Prayers and Promises" only. I was given money for my birthday to buy my choice (Batson's has quite a selection) and wanted two (well, actually all of them) but finally decided on one. (The one I had my eye on for months was gone. :'() Couple days later went back and bought the "Slow Down" for my own gift to me.
One of the best things they have are gift certificates. I bought one for my Aunt that just turned 90 and lilves in Howard. She was thrilled. The neat part was she bought groceries that she wanted and doesn't often buy. Easy for me and wonderful for her.
That was a great gift and sure she appreciated it.
A bobby soxer called a date a pine float because that is what she got: a pine float instead of a coke or, hopefully, a banana split.
A pine float was a coke and a toothpick. Wow, my memory still works.
It used to be a glass of water and a toothpick.
wrong thread - go to Good Old Days - that's where the pine float and cheap date is
Flo, who you callin' a cheap date? ;D ;D
Julie; welcome to the forum! Thanks for chiming in and giving your input on this thread! It's simply amazing how much you have catered to all the suggestions, too. Like I said before, we're very lucky to have such a dedicated business woman in our community!
It's also nice to know the "background" information on a lot of our requests, too. It's interesting to learn more about ordering, stocking, and getting different products. Like I originally posted, please honor our requests "within reason". We appreciate your trying to make an effort to get items for us, but if it isn't feasible or you find out that you're losing money on spoilage, we'll understand. I do shop at FM as much as possible, but with my frequent travels (and having family in Wichita), if I can't find something at FM, I just leave it on the list for the next "big trip". But I've found that there are many things I can do without... or find an easy sub at FM. I will also try some of the other sub suggestions you made, too.
Can you tell us the plans for the expansion? What will be moving into the new space and how will things be changing?

well tried to post two other times, maybe this one is a charm.
I have to go to walmart to get my prescriptions. Their the only ones who offer the 4 dollar for 30 day supply or 10 dollar for 90 day supply ones. SO while i am there, i do my shopping though walmart isn't the best place to shop for groceries.
I did howver et 5 pounds of ground beef for 8 dollars. that was a deal. :)

I have to ask you have you checked to see what Julie can get it for you at. I used to think that was the way to go. I had a medicine that was 4.00 at Wal-Mart and did get it there for a while. It is only 13.00 or 14.00 here at Batson's. Now that is only 10.00 more. I couldn't drive to the closest Wal-Mart for that. Do you figure the amount of gas that you spend doing this?? My van only gets 18-20 miles per gallon, which isn't that bad. But the wear and tear on your truck or car is also to consider. If I can't make it to the RX by 5:00, they will deliver it. How nice is that??? Wal-Mart won't do that for you??
I have to also say, I can bring all my kids to the store without getting strange looks from people. They will even help to entertain them if they aren't busy. This is worth a million dollars to me!!! I have to sometimes take the daycare kids with me to get things and the people at Batson's or Family Market are very nice and really it is much more fun than any Wal-Mart outting!!!
But this is about a Wish List- what about the other things that haven't been mentioned. The clothing, shoes, and such. I would love for Julie to carry these kinds of stuff, then when we went out of town, we could actually enjoy are selves and even take in a movie or a park with the kids. Instead, when we go out of town its to buy that sort of thing. That's why we had to go to the big W last weekend. Didn't want to, but no where in town to buy that sort of stuff!!
Well, the Howard version of W@!m@^+ is getting close... We have grocery, pharmacy, and gift shop (I've never found the gift section of Walmart yet, btw), plus a couple doors down is the hardware and automotive section, plus garden center, and very soon (if not already?)... we'll have the purses and some dresses and more gifts!

I had the cheapest of the cheap once, but he might be reading this so won't mention any names. ::)
Angie, if Julie put in a clothing section, where would all these extra grocery lines go? Most definately if she tried to carry clothes and shoes for everyone, all the different styles and sizes of both, she'd have to close out the grocery and pharmacy. Perhaps the new owners of the bank building could fix it to be a mini-mall and have some "boutiques" that would carry something along this line.
From past experience from WalMart ground beef...I think it's digusting. Entirely too greasy for me. We have the home-raised stuff and sometimes we run out. The lean ground beef at Family Market is delicious, little to no grease. And some of the packages of beef at WalMart aren't wrapped in the clear wrap. I like to look at the quality of meat when I buy it.
And I forgot to mention it yesterday when I was in the store, but.....Could you please...PLEASE...Order me some bubbles for bubble baths. I buy the gallon jugs at WalMart and have to stock up when I'm there. Lane refuses to take a bath if there aren't any bubbles in it. Any flavor will do....It doesn't matter to him.
im thinking that kayla's the same way devyn she love's her bubble's lol my mother put bubble's in the tub once and she was hooked lol
I'm with Devynn on Walmarts meat. Walmart is about the closest store to me and I won't buy my meat there. It's usually tough and pumped full of so much water to make it weigh more that you end up with about half of what you started with! I go to the local store on into town to buy most of my groceries, what I can't afford there I get at the dollar store! A lot of the time I can totally avoid walmart except for like skr I get my medicine there cause it's on the four dollar list otherwise it's about a hundred bucks for a month:P for just one of em.

YOu konw i do go there when i need one or two items. Not saying i don't go to family market and I go when i have to have a prescription like i needed back in february when i got so sick. But i generally wait on things until i can go to the lowest price i can get. lord i haven't gone to a movie in years. Can't afford them :(
Back in dahlonega where i moved here from they had the Holly theater. It was built in the 1930's i think. Anyway you could take a family of 6 there and get popcorn and drinks for less than 20 bucks. 2 bucks for adult tickets 1 buck for kids and a buck for popcorn and a buck for cokes.
They ran first run movies there all the time :) as well as held plays there.

Are you real sure Walmart's is really beef? I would not get my rx at Walmart if they were free. I found out unless you know that pill in the bottle is what the label says it is, you can step into deep doo doo getting them filled at Walmart. I will pay the price for a good RPH.
I have prescription insurance that takes care of everything along with my co-pay. My co-pay and premium per month isn't much more than a trip to Wal-mart. My meds would cost about $400.00 a month without the insurance. I am way ahead of my medical insurance companies. There is no way that I could have paid for the heart surgery, hospital stays, eye surgery, ankle surgery, doctor visits and prescriptions without the insurance and that is in just the last 6 years. I moved my prescriptions to Batson's before I moved myself. I didn't want to have to wait for a trip to Wal-mart to get a prescription filled when I needed it.

We can't afford insurance, I pay cash for what we get so it bein four dollars definitely helps. Between my two it would be around 200 a month. I go to the doctor once a year to renew em and unless we have a major catastrophe I doctor us myself. I've even given Joe stitches before :P
My daughter was sick when home from Iraq and had to fill a prescription,we went to Wally World. They told us it would take about and hour so we went and eat lunch.
When we returned to pick up the prescription they told us they were out and it would take a week to fill what she needed. Needless to say I was a hot Mom real quick. I ask for the prescription back and we went to Walgreens, they found her information on Tri care and had the prescription filled on 10 minutes.

Well it looks like beef, tastes a little like beef. No worse than mcdonalds you know. If i had my way i would raise my own beef, but i don't have that kind of cash laying around to shell out several hundred dollars for a feeder calf and another wheelbarrow load of money for the feed.

Doesn't look, cook. or taste like the beef I eat. ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D Sounds like you're okay on your meds since you take the same thing all the time. :police:
I am definitely in Julie's corner on the meds... back when my mom was alive she was on over 16 different meds from so many drs. If it hadn't been for Julie checking med interactions, mom would have left this earthly world a lot sooner. Plus several times, I have called up Julie on weekends, evenings, in the middle of the night for meds or medical questions on drugs... Walmart can't touch that service. After the deck accident, it was going to take Walgreens 1 1/2hr at 11pm to fill our prescription, Julie filled it the next day. Same with when the twins were born. My mom used to always shop locally and I thought she was silly, but then later in life, I have realized how important these services are. Thank you Julie and all the other local businesses for your long hours and dedication to our community. Ang - I will have to agree with you on the kid part - My kids love going to Batsons... and it is usually a pleasant experience!
