Title: sirens on the fritz?
Post by: indygal on August 09, 2008, 09:11:28 AM
OK, I'll be the first to bite..
Anyone know why the siren at the courthouse started blaring then finally faded down to the sound of a mortally wounded goose?

Pepelect said that place was hot up in there where the clock is but if Wilma is right, someone is probably going to have to talk to him about leaving his shorts up there.

There is no siren on the courthouse.

Did the noise come from the siren or the clock tower.
The siren is on the water tower 1/2 block west of the courthouse.  Always has been.

Give me a call I can check your shorts, too?!!!

There is an electrical company here in town who has a sign on their truck that says, "We check your shorts."

For the sake of public safety  Howard sirens need to soulnd one way for fires., another for tornados and a third way for other emergencies.  Testing the sirens should occur at certain times when the public is notified of the testing.

I wasn't aware they blowed the sirens for anything except fires and tornadoes.  They do blow them to remind the guys of the fire meeting, but that's always on Wed nite at 7:00 p.m.  If there was actually a tornado or fire, I'm sure they would get the word out to those involved.  By the way, the siren sounds are different for fires than for tornadoes.

They can also blow them for civil defence.  Which is just like saying for fire and tornado.  Fire goes up and down.  Tornado jest goes and goes. If you hear the tornado siren put your head between your legs and kiss your butt goodbye.

Unless you are in the old grade school building.

We were playing volleyball in the rain at the park when the sirens went off.  It was only the one across town, as the one at the park did not malfunction.  Yes, it did sound like a dying duck or something.  Danny came by and informed the pool that it was just a malfunction and nothing to worry about; that was nice of him!

As I've said before, it would be nice to have the siren "guide" printed in the paper and/or on the Cox cable station, as well as the testing times and fire meeting times.  Even just once every couple months.

We don't have Cox here. But I am sure that Channel 2 on SKT would be happy to post the siren "guide" if you would like.  I don't know if we could put it on Wichita's cable they might get confused over there in the big city.

The fire meeting is at 7:00pm every Wednesday night.

The sirens go off at that time.

If you hear them any other time they are real...unless the duck has died then that is different.

First, my apologies. I heard the siren coming from the direction of the courthouse, but wasn't aware (but am now!) that it's attached to the water tower. It was doing a tornado/fire combo that went on several minutes before winding down to the last quacking gasps of duck death. At first I wondered if it might be another unrecognizable courthouse song, but then looked at the clock and realized it wasn't time to strike on the hour. I'm still waiting to hear "Beer Barrel Polka," "If I Were a Rich Man" or "Stairway to Heaven." At least I could sing along with those!

ok bowie girl what do you think that thing mounted to the west horizontal  next to the alley is?  It looks like a siren... It is wired in to the same system that sets off the sirens at the lift station and pool.....It has been there since before you dad was born.

Perhaps she thought there was a fire but the siren was on the fritz again and either didn't blow or sounded weird.

I think what Heather is referring to is either Friday or Saturday (can't remember the exact day) there were a lot of sirens heard (I'm not sure what happened) but I don't remember hearing the actual siren that lets you know there is a fire.  So maybe this is what she is referring to?

then again Heather could get on here and tell us what she meant when she made that comment then we wouldn't have to "guess" what she "maybe" meant.  Sounded to me like she was saying there was a fire but no siren to blow to let people know.  see? I'm just guessing too.

I don't think the siren sounds for fires in the country.  Someone, does it?

We were setting in the back yard when the siren sounded one time. I was told that was to let them know it was a fire in the county. It was a barn fire and they had to pull out the bales that were not on fire. That is why there were so many firetrucks.

Friday the siren was a test.  The control system and wiring to the siren on the water has been totally replaced.   The siren was set off to test the new system.  It worked flawlessly....I hope we have killed the duck....

On another note the fire, civil, and tornado sirens should be put an a battery/generator backup system.  If and when an event happens the electrical system will be the first to go.  The sheriff's office is on a gen set backup.  There is a system set up for the water system.. But the sirens are at the will and availability of the electrical flow from Westar.   The Siren mounted on the pole by the Pool doesn't have a backup nor does the water tower siren.   All three are electrical motors that turn to mechanically make noise.  This takes a lot electricity while it is sounding but not anyother time.

They make sirens that are totally electronic now that only take a small amount of electricity to operate.  They can be set up on battery or generator.  They can be located anywhere with electricity available or not.

My biggest concern with the civil defence siren is that if you are in the high school building you can not hear the sirens.  I think there should be one either incorporated with the intercom system for every room or better yet put a siren out by the school.  It has the highest concentration of people in the county but it has no alarm.
