Link to Kansas Geological Survey report on geology of Elk County 1958:

http://www.kgs.ku.edu/General/Geology/Elk/03_mine.html#OUTC (http://www.kgs.ku.edu/General/Geology/Elk/03_mine.html#OUTC)

This particular page speaks of the rock available for quarry operations, photos of the Moline Quarry, and discusses the 2 million plus tons of coal under Elk County.

This document also contains links to some very informative maps on Elk County, like this one locating all the oil and gas wells in 1958, along with all the gas and oil pipelines (blow it up to 200% in the veiwer and you can see owner and size of pipeline) as well as all the county roads in use at the time.
