Title: Buying a Woman for Sixty-Five Cents
Post by: W. Gray on March 07, 2008, 05:40:22 PM
From the Longton Courant, September 15, 1875.

"Sixteen Chinese women were sold at auction in California the other day, only Chinese being allowed to bid. Eight dollars was the highest price, and one sold for sixty-five cents, her nose being out of plumb."

This sale was ten years after slavery was abolished in the US.
This comment came about 10 months after the newspaper moved from Elk City to Longton and two months before it moved to Howard City.
