Diane, how is your weather today??? :o :o ::) ::)
Cold and windy, but dry so far. We had rain and sleet yesterday that left a little ice this morning.
I heard that there was a nor'easter heading your way. I am curious. Is it as bad as it's reputation and how do you handle it?
It has been a beautiful day in Elk County, but that is going to end tomorrow.
Here we are in WARM SOUTH TEXAS and y'all need to know that the temp in Howard, KS is three degrees warmer than it is down here. Now I ask you, what's wrong with this picture? :o :o
Yesterday we were in the 40's and today has been rainy and wind out of the north and chilly 50 degree temps. I do get a grin out of the born and bred south Texans. They run around with sock caps, gloves and big heavy coats on, and for those of you that know me ---I don"t very often wear a heavy coat, so people think I'm not too bright.
Hope your weather doesn't get real bad. Take care and stay warm.
It looks like the worst of it is going northwest of us. We had a coating of snow late this afternoon, and the temp. will keep dropping over the next few days. The big bomber snow systems haven't set up for us yet this winter. If they do, we'll just hunker down and endure. I wouldn't want a big storm right now as my kitchen sink and cook top are missing. I set up my microwave and coffee maker in the dining room and my wall oven is fine. I can't use my dishwasher right now and I darned near poured a pan of potato water down where the sink USED to be! ;D ;D ;D The tile guy will work tomorrow while Al and I do a CPR update for our dentist and staff.

Now Mama... everyone knows how much I love you..
but I am having a hard time with keeping my mouth closed on that one. :-X

Is that what they mean by a person's elevator going only to the second floor of a ten story building? Duh............ ::)
Yep You got-er, Bounty Hunter. Right on the money. lol
Well................if that's the case, about half of this country's population would fall in that category!
It can be well below freezing and there can be some "nut" running around outdoors with shorts on! Now, that is what I would call "not very bright."
Well--- maybe not "bright" But~~~~`maybe not cold blooded either and so, warm enough for him.
I am probnably as comfortable with my outer wear as the person all bundled up is with theirs.
Whatever floats your boat, I guess.
Just to let you all know ~~~~~ at this moment we are having a lighteneing/thunder storm, with a much needed rain.
Jeepers ..... each day is an experience. You Gotta Love it !!
I hear ya, Jo, about all the southerners thinking that 50 degrees is cold! Chuck and I just got back from visiting his family in south Florida (Okeechobee), and we loved the warm weather! Although they did have very cold weather right before we got there (30 degrees lows at night), it was in the 60's and 70's when we were there. Of course, on the 60's days, everyone was bundled up in coats and sweaters... you can tell who the "yankees" are, though... we were in shorts!
I'll have to say it's the same way here in San Diego County! Wimps, I call them! (But, they're "good people," for the most part!)
I was that way in West Texas as well. When the themometer hit 40 you would have thought they lived in Montana or Idaho. Out came the overcoats, hats, gloves, boots, etc. Of course, I will admit, sometimes the wind made it seem worse. Still, we usually had a sweater or light jacket at that point.

Jo, Lewis had an aunt and uncle that always went to south Texas for the winter months. Donna TX, I think. He would call and say, yep, it's raining, but I don't have to shovel it. ;D
That is a true fact --- rally it makes sense, instead of complaining about something..add a little humor and enjoy it.
Donna is about 14 miles this side of the border. 3 hours south of us. Our temp this morning was 48. The sun is trying it's very best to shine, but the clouds are just as determined. lol
We had a couple of inches of snow this afternoon, just enough to bring out the sand trucks and plows. Now it's turning to rain at 32.5 degrees. I can stay home tomorrow and fuss at my tile guy. I'm not real happy with some of his work so far on my counters, and I'm not a fussy person. He has done great work for us before, so I'm not sure what's up this time.
Diane, it's a contractor virus I tell you! And it must be spreading pretty fast if it's up your way already. It started here for me last summer and keeps getting worse with every contractor we've had to work on our house or at the farm. I don't know if the bug is making them screw up or making me unreasonable, but it's pretty serious... ;)
I hope you get your tile guy straightened out, Diane. We really liked the work done by both, the guy who put in our granite (slab)counter top, and the other one who put up our tile backsplash, but, boy, their services don't come cheap!
It's a cold, bright, beautiful day in Elk County. At 6:00 this morning my kitchen was lit up with moonlight. My back yard is covered with diamonds.
So, how is the weather in your neighborhood?
I would describe it in Bartlesville as the same as you described it in God's Country, Elk County, Kansas USA. Clear and cold a beautiful day otherwise.
Frank Winn
Excuse, please. Archeobabe's post is actually mine. She still hasn't been able to replace her computer and is using mine and I didn't know that she hadn't logged out.
But it is still a beautiful day in Elk County, Kansas.
We had some treacherous black ice last night with a lot of accidents. Today is cold and clear with perhaps snow showers tonight.
Bonnie and Joanna, my tile guy and I had a meeting of the minds and all is well. The granite tile looks wonderful.
The electrician came yesterday, added the extra outlets I wanted and installed 3 pieces of under cabinet lighting. Love it! It is very expensive, but I've been planning this for a long time. I have to wait 2 more weeks for the limestone back splash to arrive, but things are back together enough so I can use the kitchen once more. It's a good excuse to see what I want to pare down, throw out or store somewhere else. I've been slowly moving some of my big kettles and larger pans to our attached garage so I don't have to run the basement stairs as often.
Congratulations, Diane ! That is wonderful. I had a wonderful kitchen in our home that we sold to our oldest Grandson and wife. I miss that. This full time RVing is a great life, but this 5th wheel is a "fattin' pen" Not enough stairs to run. lol
I know you will enjoy your new kitchen.
The weather here in south TX is NOT GOOD we have had cold temps and rain, rain, rain. Last night we had a dance at the club house, so OF COURSE we went, and since is is just a hop and skip over there, we walked. 3 hours later, it was time to come home and it had been raining hard most of that time. There is poor drainage here, and the streets fill up, so we waded water all the way, and got rained on to boot. Sure had a good time dancing, and then not so good time trudging home in water. Life is good and never boring. !!!
Oh Jo! I'm so sorry your weather isn't great (NOT!!!) My friend in Orlando, FL just emailed to tell me that her weather is awful too, it only got up to 70 to day and tomorrow probably won't get above 65. Boo hoo!
(Just kidding you know... I love to dream of being somewhere warm so your stories really are appreciated!)
Diane, I'm glad you're "back in your kitchen!" It does cost a lot, but like you, we'd planned for the improvements for a long time, and we "look at it and smile!" It's been a challenge to keep the cabinet tops completely cleared off, but we're succeeded, so far. Bob received a new "Bose" radio for Christmas, and it did rate a spot on the new granite counter top! We never have enough storage space for stuff, so that's always a problem, where to put things! I'll be anxious to see pictures, when you are through with everything you're doing.
As for our weather.....well, it's not too shabby! We are hoping for rain this week-end. Jo, it sounds like you've really been having lots of rain. Even though it's inconvenient at times, it's sure good to have rain in the part of the country where it's usually so dry.
Good morning, everyone. Today is a ditto of yesterday, except for the diamonds in the back yard. I don't know where they went and I think it is even colder. Tomorrow starts a warming trend. Methinks Kansas is still the best place to live.
Where, oh, where has my sunshine gone?
Where, oh, where could it be?
Bonnie? Jo? Diane?
Have you seen my sunshine?
Wilma, does Bud get bored these cold cold days? My tomcat is so bored, he spent last night in the basement on safari. He has so much hunting instinct, he has to use it somewhere. Today, he is napping on the couch.
Our sunshine is here today, gone tomorrow! Or, so the weatherman tells us! We actually are forecast to get a good rain on Saturday and Sunday. Which makes sense, because this is the week-end of the "Buick Invitational" golf tournament at Torrey Pines! Tiger Woods, Phil Michelson, and all of "those boys" are here playing golf. And, it's not at all unusual for whichever week-end they have that tournament, for it to rain!
Wilma, I had your sunshine here for awhile, I'll send it back as soon as I can.
Sixdogsmom, Bud slept most of yesterday but has been restless today. It keeps him busy watching the birds at the window. I wish I had a basement to banish him to sometimes. He's napping now, but in about an hour he will arise, move to my bed and wait for me to join him.
Sunny is back and promises to hang around for several days. He is barely peeking through the fog this morning. The fog is frozen on everything and promises to be a pretty sight when Mr. Sun finally breaks through. For all of you who have never seen the sun shining through the frozen fog hanging on everything, don't you wish you were in Elk County, Kansas this morning?
It was pretty this morning........now when the sun comes out will be even prettier.
AOYP
See Wilma, I told you I would send the sun back. Now it's gloomy here.
Diane, sorry about your gloomy day. Sun is on his way back to you. Say good morning to him and send him back this way. We could use a few more bright days.
A typical Kansas day in Elk County, USA. The wind switched to the north with a vengeance and the temperature dropped 10 degrees. No sun or brightness anywhere and light snow on the way.
We had a little rain this morning, more due tonight. No snow in the forcast though. Bonnie, has California slipped into the ocean yet? North of you seems to be getting hit hard.
We're probably slipping, but we don't even know it, from where we're sitting! Actually, we did have 4.75" of rain from last Thursday to yesterday. No flooding, as it came soft and easy. A great rain, but there was at least one place where the Highway was closed in the area, due to mud slides across the road, from Ramona to Escondido on Highway 78. I saw the pictures of the flooded areas, also up north of us. There's lots of new snow in the ski areas, which makes a LOT of people happy!
Bob had cataract surgery on his left eye on January 10th., and surgery on the right eye, on January 25th. Each surgery was "picture perfect," and, he can now see "20/20" at a distance! Before the surgery, he was really having a tough time seeing much of anything very clear! Which has nothing to do with the weather! But, it is a "PTL" for us!
Congrats on the successful surgeries. I'll bet he's glad to have the bright colors back.
He's amazed at how good/bright the color is on our T.V. screen!
Well bless his heart! He will be amazed at all he can once again see..
our eyesight is so precious.
Bonnie, I had cataracts removed and lens implants in both eyes in March of 2007 - couldn't hardly believe the difference. My distance is 20/15. Do need very weak reading glasses but that's only because my arms are long enough. ;D Know he will enjoy being able to see and yes, colors are so much brighter. However, I can not go outside without sunglasses. Kills my eyes.
Bonnie, that is so great about Bob's eyesight.........
I know when dad had his done, he too was amazed with how good everything looked.
Mom got a little fed up with him tho.......he would be looking out the window and noticing how bright and beautiful things were and calling at her to come see what he was looking at.........I am afraid she lost patience with him and told him she had already seen it........when she complained to me, I told her that he was just expierencing his new eye sight and wanting to share with her........guess that has come from living 67 years together.............

Sounds like the weather is going to be something else around here tomorrow. All of you that have to be out and about, please be very careful. I''m sure I'll be really glad to see Piedmont tomorrow evening if it does what they are promising.
Yes, all who have to be out do be careful! We got stocked up today with groceries, gasoline and milk. Should be set for at least 24 hours or so! These critters sure put on the feedbag when the weather gets bad. I can always tell when a storm is coming, just watch the disappearing food! :-\
Beautiful, typical Kansas weather this week. Monday-sunshine, Tuesday-snow, Wednesday-sunshine, and today 4 inches of snow already and still coming down heavy. At least our wind isn't blowing like it is west of us. The snow is just piling up. Had to clean the bird feeder this morning so the birds could get to the feed. They might have knocked it all off eventually but it didn't hurt to help them.
Last night, when I heard how bad the predictions were, I decided to not take any chances on the road to drive to WSU today. Glad I'm so smart! What puzzles me is why nearly every school in southeast and south-central KS is closed today EXCEPT WSU! LOL
High school and grade school students must have prayed harder for a snow day than the college students ;D
Seven inches and climbing. Just heard a report from Longton of 8 inches. Still snowing, but not as hard.
This is a beautiful snow............makes me wish my kids were still young so I could go out and play in it.
At my age if I were to go out to make a snow man I am afraid the neighbors would call the men in the white coats.....LOL
I just cleared off my porch for the second time since I got up.(.dog has to go out).......around 7:30 there was 5 inches plus......as of a half hour ago there was about 9 inches and I had to go out and take a picture or two and just stand amazed at what is out there. It is still coming down but so softly.........love it.
I like snow when it is like this.........but, after this one lets all pray for an early spring........I have had enough......LOL.......waving the white flag.........Have a great warm day you all.....and aoyp
This one is enough for me, too. I have a cousin that has her six shooter primed ready to shoot the ground hog before he can see his shadow.
I will paint a bullseye on his little behind to make sure she does not miss ;D
After I wrote the first post of the day, I bundled up and walked up to the postoffice.
It is so pretty out.........I had to walk up on road.
Took more effort to get from my front door to the road, but then after making sure the traffic
would NOT run me off the road, just walked out with no prob.
When it refreezes we will be in trouble.......it is slushy out on the road and they are working on removal.
I got mail for Irene and I and when I got back home, the dog gave me a nasty look for leaving him at home, I made him
walk in the alley. Now, he is short and his belly dragged through the snow......I had to laugh at him but he was game and wanted to walk more.
But, I used my head and just came back home. My hips are talking to me . I was tempted to go back up to cafe......but will stay in.
I can enjoy it just watching the birds and will head to my book now.
Hope all stay well.

I've been watching your weather. We had 53 MPH winds here yesterday, did some damage in the area. It's cold and clear now with rain and maybe some ice tomorrow. Keep in mind that "our" groundhog Phil, has the internet and everything in his burrow, so he decide whether to see his shadow or not. He does take bribes. Just send them to me and I'll see that he gets them. ;D ;D ;D
I don't have a problem with six more weeks of winter as long as the days are like they were on Saturday Jan. 26. I mean a 70 degree winter day isn't bad!!!!!!! ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

Sooooo exactly what do you bribe a groundhog with? Hmmmmm???? ::) ::)
What's your favorite brand of chocolates, Diane? Do you think your groundhog would like them?
Well now, I, err, Punxsutawney Phil loves Fannie Mae's Colonial assortment. ;D Apples and carrots are good too. He can get his own danged tomatoes and probably will next summer. We are supposed to have partly cloudy skies Sat. morning, so who knows.
Maybe we could ply him with old fashioneds tomorrow night and he might forget to show up on Saturday morning? Does that sound like a plan?? ;D
Tha sounds like a plan. I nominate Diane to see that he gets enough to make sure he sleeps through Saturday.
Right now it's pouring here, but 10 miles north it's ice. I think Gobbler's Knob is having an ice storm. I'm told that Phil, like most marmots, enjoys a good dark lager, but I would think a few hot toddies or some hot buttered rum would be the ticket today and tonight. ;D
The sun is brilliant against the snow of yesterday. Poor old Phil would have to be wearing sunglasses if he were here today! Hot buttered rium sounds good, I haven't ever tried that, but it sounds good!
Give Phil whatever he likes and plenty of it. I am thinking from the weather map for your region, that he might not see his shadow tomorrow, anyway.
He saw his shadow this morning :'(
They SAY he saw his shadow. The only picture I saw of him, he had his eyes closed. Can it be authentic if he didn't actually see his shadow? And isn't he supposed to wake up and come out of his burrow and see his shadow? Is pulling him out of his nest, holding him high for the cameras, then replacing him the same thing? We might have a case here if we care to pursue it.
However, it is done, I am sure that if he opened his eyes, he saw his shadow. Also, here in Elk County. The sun is bright this morning and the temperatures will get above freezing. Still a lot of snow on the ground.
Wonder where we could find a lawyer to pursue a class action suit against Puxatawny Phil ;D
Happy Candlemas Day to you all. The storms cleared out and as you know, Phil did see his shadow. But then we're supposed to get up to 50 today and perhaps 60 on Tuesday and Wednesday. Now if you were and old German farmer, today is the day you check all your supplies to see if you still have half of it left to finish out the winter. So check out those hay mows and corn cribs folks. By the way, the "not so secret" society that takes care of Phil in Punxsutawney, does have legal representation. It's the "Rodent Attorneys Trial Society", better known as RATS. ;D
Today is Monday February 4th. I come to work at about 6:30 every day, and today it is very very very foggy. I cant believe it is so foggy. I live in Howard and feel sorry for those who have to drive very far.
Boy, today is beautiful.........I could take this for another month or so and then it would be Spring for real.
temp is in the 70's and I know it will change....(after all I am in Kansas) but for now it is just about perfect.
I have managed to walk 45 minutes today. Yes, it is muddy and it will take time for it to dry up.
I cleaned up the yard a bit and then sat out in the sun.
Hope you all take time to step out and enjoy. This is a great day the Lord has made.

You are so very right about that one. I have a daycare, the kids can't get out in the backyard, but thankfully I added on a porch with a roof and they have been out on the porch will me until nap time. It is just wonderful. I was worried about it, the start here was awful, lots of fog and you could not hardly see a block away, but not now. The Lord has blessed us today!! with his beautiful sun shine. They say tomorrow will be a different story. Oh, well, you have to take the good with the bad, right!!
Angi, surely you have seen fog before like we had this morning. But then you aren't old enough to remember 1979. I was working in Wichita. I would get off at 5:00 and my husband and our passenger would be waiting for me to pick them up at Beech Aircraft. I picked them up on this day in late January or early February and to save time we didn't bother to switch drivers. Lo and behold we were a few miles east of Augusta when we hit the densest fog ever. I couldn't see in front of me or the yellow line in the center of the road. The only thing I could see was the white line at the right hand edge of the road and once in awhile the taillights of a car ahead of us. It was too dangerous to stop and change drivers as someone coming up behind us wouldn't have time to stop. Couldn't get off the road as it was the old 2 lane 96 east of Augusta. I drove all the way back to Severy. Our passenger in the back seat didn't go to sleep as usual and my husband who usually criticized my driving didn't say a word. This morning's fog wasn't too bad. We started to Wichita about 8:30 and drove out of it before we got to Piedmont.
Steve said it was foggy here early this morning. Apparently not early in my world. I left at 4:45 A.M. and there wasn't any fog then. Sounds like tomorrow evening could be fun driving home, but not any more fun than last Thursday was. Believe me going down 400 sideways is not my idea of a good time, not even at 20 mph. Everyone enjoy the day whatever the weather.
Now this is what I call Kansas weather. In the 70's yesterday, thunderstorms this morning, temperature just above freezing and a promise of snow before the day is over. Don't all of you transplanted Kansans wish you here?
Looks like we will all spend the evening watching the election returns and the storm warnings. We may have another round of tornados like we had a few weeks ago. I slept through the worst part of it in the middle of the night last time, hopefully, I'll sleep through it again.
We have fog a lot here in south Texas -- of course we are just about 3/4 of a mile from the bay water, so that can be expected. We may be back in Kansas sooner than we thought, however, as this wind is blowing a gale from the south. Last week we had very strong winds, and on 77 highway south of Victoria, TX a motor home towing a car and traveling south, was blown into the path of a north bound 18 wheeler - both caught fire, the semi driver was killed and the couple in the motor home are still hospitalized. What a horrible experience that would be.
So, Jo, when that winds quits blowing, can you just hitch up and get on home?
We plan to be here until the last week of March -- that is. if the good Lord is willing and the Devil doesn't care.
No matter where Fred and I are - when it is time to leave, we both say, " wish we didn't have to go", then we do the same thing over when we leave the next time. Guess you could honestly say, we seem to be perfectly happy no matter where we are. Guess that is good, huh?
That's good!
Today is Wednesday. So far this week we have had dense fog, temperatures in the 70's, thunderstorms, sleet and this morning snow. Yes, Toto, we are still iin Kansas.
We're at 65 going for a record breaking 70 later today. The wind is starting to blow from the southwest and thunderstorms are on their way. I expect to see the wicked witch and her flying monkeys overhead soon.
We have gusty winds out of the northeast and temp right now is 56 degrees at 10:47 AM
Just cold and a little frost here, but not expected to snow anymore. Just thankful that all of those tornados went somewhere else, but at the same time, feeling for those people to the south of us.
Hey, Florida, how is your weather today? Do we have anyone living in the great northwest where the great snowfall has fallen?
I received this from a good friend in Minnesota just now -- so thought I would share with y/all.
It's not cold yet !
60 above zero:
Floridians turn on the heat. People in Minnesota plant gardens.
50 above zero:
Californians shiver uncontrollably. People in Duluth sunbathe.
40 above zero:
Italian & English cars won't start. People in Minnesota drive with the windows down.
32 above zero:
Distilled water freezes. The water in Bemidji gets thicker.
20 above zero:
Floridians don coats, thermal underwear, gloves, wool hats. People in Minnesota throw on a flannel shirt.
15 above zero:
New York landlords finally turn up the heat. People in Minnesota have the last cookout before it gets cold.
Zero:
People in Miami all die. Minnesotans close the windows.
10 below zero:
Californians fly away to Mexico. People in Minnesota get out their winter coats.
25 below zero:
Hollywood disintegrates. The Girl Scouts in Minnesota are selling cookies door to door.
40 below zero:
Washington DC runs out of hot air. People in Minnesota let the dogs sleep indoors.
100 below zero:
Santa Claus abandons the North Pole. Minnesotans put the extensions on their ice augers, & go fishing.
460 below zero:
ALL atomic motion stops (absolute zero on the Kelvin scale.) People in Minnesota start saying..."Cold 'nuff fer ya?"
500 below zero:
Hell freezes over. Minnesota public schools will open 2 hours late.
"50 above zero: Californians shiver uncontrollably." (And, that's the truth!)
Actually, I just checked and our temperature on our patio is "70º" but that's probably due to the sun shining so brightly. What a deal!
(Report from Escondido, CA, San Diego County.)
Jo, that is funneeee. Wish I knew a Minnesotan to send it to.
I couldn't pass this one by. We live just outside of Toronto, Ontario. For the past 10 days our temps have flucuated anywhere between 15F & 50F. Yesterday, the high was about 50F. Since the wee hours of today (Wed) we currently have about 15" of snow on the ground...and it's still falling. Today our temps have hovered around 30-32F. This time of year I don't know whether to pray for warm weather or bone chilling cold weather, because either way it won't snow. But....it's February and although I go into denial every year...snow is kind of expected. DARN!
Jo...my mom winters in south Texas and has for the past ten years. She has a place in Mission. I talk to mom several times a week and she JUST delights in telling me how warm it is. And the few days that it does cool down a bit...she whines BIG time. She doesn't get much sympathy from me. HA HA
Hey little girl --- so nice to hear from you. You stay pretty quiet up in the cold country. We have several people here in the park from up your way . One couple is from Quebec and they are a delight. They usually get in the pool every day. Some days it is a bit too chilly for them, and that is the days the native Texans walk around with their coats buttoned clear to their chins - hooded sweat shirts, gloves and either ear muffs or a band around their head and ears. What a hoot !!! This couple tell us how much bad stuff is on the ground at their home, so they think this is wonderful weather.
It is nice and sunny today and the temp right now, 10:43 AM is 62 degrees. I like it !!!
I would like it, too, Jo. We are cloudy, temp about 34, no wind, have had some snow flurries. Actually, it looked like a nice spring day through my bedroom windows where I couldn't see the snow on the ground and I was inside, nice and warm. The birds are still feeding heavy and hanging around. They don't think it is spring yet.
I have to brag. The last couple of warm days brought up some daffodil tops and I found some snowdrops blooming in some sheltered spots. There is hope. Now it's cold again but not bad for February.
What a nice cheery post Diane, -- Spring is just around the corner !!!!
Another sunshiny COLD day in Elk County. I do have tulips trying to come up and some crocuses are up but not blooming yet. I believe that spring can't be far away, but then, I have always been gullible and optimistic. I am going back to my basketball games. Stoudemire is playing for the Spurs today and Shaq will be playing with the Suns later. Can't miss that.
How is your day?
For those who live in Elk and Chautauqua counties and points on east in Kansas......there is a severe storm warning out between 4 a.m. until 3 p.m.. There could be 1/4" to 1/2" of ice accumulations. So if anyone has a generator, it will give you a peace of mind to have plenty of gas on hand, and to all.........plenty of groceries!!! Tis time to button down the hatches, and hibernate!
YUK! Double YUK!!
I can think of other provacative and descriptive words for it!
Well, I don't have time for this nonsense. I have to work tomorrow evening. I don't want the ice accumulation. So there.
So do ya hear that weather Gods? Janet has SPOKEN!! :police: :police:
I'm with Janet, I don't have time for it either! But guess what, I got it. The stuff woke me up at 2:00 this morning. I may just check it to them today at work. :-\ :-\ :-\ :-\
Good morning, we had sleet, rain, in the night. The temp was in the 20's. Sounds like there is ice up toward Caney and Independence. We are supposed to have thunderstorms this afternoon. If you don't like the weather, just wait a little while and it will change! That's the slogan for this part of the world. Well, it's getting light now and it doesn't look like the ice is very bad.
The ice is bad enough, the schools are cancelled for the day.
Luckily, for me, Jim finished the papers safely. A little late towards the end, but he's safe at home now.
Thunder and lightening and what sounded like rain, sleet, hail and anything else that makes a noise. The bird window was frozen shut this morning and the window covered with ice. I could see the shadows of birds looking for something to eat, so out came the hair dryer and unfroze the window. Sure enough, the feeder was coated with ice and the feed covered up. Anything that was on the ground was covered with ice, too. I put a can full of feed on top of the ice and threw a can of squirrel feed out on the ground. That is where the doves prefer to feed and they like the corn.
This is just winter in Kansas reminding us that spring is still a few weeks away. I think I will hibernate today and hope for a better tomorrow.
Ooooooo! Brings back a lot of memories of the days in Colorado and Kansas and Wyoming. This is the time of the year when I am so glad that I live in SoCal. Just to be mean and nasty I will tell you that today here the temperature will be around 82 degrees. I shoveled a lot of snow in my younger days and I am glad I don't have to do that anymore. All of you who have to go out please take care while driving. 8)
I made it to Beaumont this morning. The highway wasn't all that slick, but the ice was coming down at such a good rate that I couldn't keep it off of my wipers and windshield. I decided to come back to Piedmont. It was a nice hour and a half drive. THIS GLOBAL WARMING IS KILLING ME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ::) ::) ::) ::) ::) ::) ::) ::) ::) ::)
We got the cold here and very windy, with ugly lake effect clouds but very little precip. It got down to 11 last night which is darn cold for here. I told the little snow drops and crocus they better pull their heads down again. I hope you are OK with that ice, saw it on tv. My Chicago friend had below zero. Usually she would be enjoying Scottsdale now, but her mother had to have back surgery so Barb is suffering in the Chicago cold.
Well, one more time this winter I got the iced scraped off my walkway.
I do have to tie the dog out and have found if I know it is suppose to freeze or snow, I will
throw ice melt out the night before and add an extention to his dog chain so all I have to do is step out holding the door open and then I can clip the hook to his collar.
If I let him loose he comes home when he is darn good and ready and most of the time I have to go get him...
NOT A GOOD THING FOR ME TO DO.....
So I just got through chopping the side walk clean for me........I can't get all the way out to the main sidewalk and don't know where our snow shovel guy is..........most of the time we just melt off if I can't get to it.
I have a little snow melt left that I brought into my apartment to help me and if it doesn't thaw I will not be able to get more.
It is out in the rec room and it is too icy for this old lady to walk on.
Temp isn't too bad.....but, gee whiz I wonder what happened to that global warming we were suppose to be under this winter????? any idea.
Stay safe you all and if you don't have to get out, don't..
Summer is coming Summer is coming, Summer is coming.
I must keep reminding myself that.
One more day closer to nice weather..
AOYP
Cold and definitely an ice storm here. I had to take my rubber hammer to the front gate to break through the ice. It is bad enough here that I closed to office today, it takes a lot for me to do that. I'm not complaining though....the electricity is on and the cable is going. Everything else is just an annoyance.
Another typical Kansas day, the sun is shining through the snowflakes falling in Elk County. There is still ice on things and no promise of a good warmup. And to all you homesick ex-Elk Countians, wish you were here.
I am so thankful to still have my cable and electricity. No sign of warming up much today. The only reason this isn't as bad as last year is because of all the trees we lost and trimmed last year. About 5000 here without power, they have 30 teams working around the clock. I can't imagine that it will be 50 here by Thursday, but hey, its the Ozarks....anything can happen.
Another typical weather day in Elk County. We don't know what is going to happen. It is cloudy, cold, just above freezing. The weather men all tell us that there is freezing rain on the way, then they say the temperatures are going to rise and turn it to rain. Snow tomorrow that will turn into slush. I wouldn't be surprised if Mr. Sun put in an appearance, too. Even the birds don't know what is going to happen. They aren't acting as if the weather were going to turn bad. At least the wind isn't blowing, yet.
Rain Rain and more rain! It was supposed to freeze and snow after midnight but I am still up ( 2:00am) and it isn't freezing or snowing yet.
But is still is raining. I'll probably go to bed in an hour or so ( I'm not tired yet) and I'll check before I retire to the bedstead. :)
Rain is just fine with me... I can do without the snow and ice.
would much rather have rain than snow or ice, but OMG where is all this moisture going to go. There is almost no bottom to country roads and fields now.
I am so relieved that we do not have rain, ice or snow today. After another big ice storm a week ago, which just melted into the ground overnight a few days ago, this last two days of rain just soaked everything. I have never seen so much standing water in my yard before. What a mess. I looked outside yesterday afternoon in the midst of the rain and there was the Jack Russell digging away. What a grubby little water dog. Whats not to love?
Diane, I was wondering if you were snowed in yet. You have my sympathy as we are having such depressing weather. If it would rain, the sleet and ice would go away. The sun was supposed to shine this afternoon but I haven't seen it yet and tomorrow is supposed to be more rain and snow. The groundhog was right.
We are south enough from Philly that we got icy, slushy stuff to make a slippery mess, but not close anything down. We even taught a CPR class for a church group yesterday evening and 19 people came out for it.
And we're getting even more icy slush! :o :o :o
I just hope we don't lost our power tonight.
It is nasty out and I just resalted the entry way.
Dog must go out before my bedtime.
Here at the housing we still haven't been
shoveled out. Hope it does get warm enough to
melt tomorrow.
I won't go to church if it is like this. There is a service on
tv I like to watch if I have to stay home. It is First Methodist
Church from Wichita. Good preacher and the music is nice, too.

Today is supposed to be another "Kansas" weather day :
Sunshiny this morning, turning to rain and then snow this afternoon and evening.
Definitely not a dull moment! :)
But yesterday.. even though it was windy was AWESOME!
75 degrees and beautiful.
My whole family and some friends was out at the farm..where we target practiced all afternoon. it was a perfect day.
Today is windy.. and it was rather warm this morning, but it is getting colder and the wind is sharp against your skin.
Oh well, It won't be long before we are sweating and grumbling about the heat.. LOL
QuoteOh well, It won't be long before we are sweating and grumbling about the heat.. LOL
Moving down here in 1980, after 3 years in Minnesota, I might sweat,
but I will NOT grumble about the heat.
everyone must have been outside enjoying the sunshine today cause if it weren't for those word games, there wouldn't be many new posts. Guess I'll go to bed now and maybe be something to read tomorrow.
I am like you, Flo, yesterday was a very quiet day on the forum. I just logged on a little while ago -- today has been a busy one for me. This morning it was in the upper 70's - I had company in and out my door until nearly 1:30 -- the sun was bright and shining - then I sat down to read the Corpus Christi paper and within 15 minutes it was dark and cloudy and one of our neighbors came over and said -- "turn your TV on we are under a tornado alert". Well, Holie Buckets, I did just that and we are still having the effect of that announcememt. There was a tornado that touched down about 17 miles south west of us - and the wind came up and the tops of the palm trees looked like their tops were going to blow off. Temps dropped 15 degrees and it is still raining. We do need the rain, badly, but golden oldies don't need the "shock" of that kind of news. lol lol lol
We had this same thing happen last Thursday evening -- a tornado touched down in Corpus in a residential area and done damage to some homes. The park manager from Elk City called and said he was watching MSNBC and they said there was a tornado at Corpus and he was scared that we were not alright. Bless him -- he is a jewel. I told him the news was not correct - and then within 15 minutes we were in it and the temp dropped 33 degrees ... Guess our area is on the schedule for some goofy weather for a while.
But all is well, and we are safe and dry..and our hair is still on our heads.
WOW - that was close enough. Now when you come back to this neck of the woods, you leave all that weather down there, okay? ???
Jeepers Mom.. I'm glad you are alright.. you know me.. I would have run screaming to............well.. I don't know where.. but I would run.. :D
The weather looks like it is going to be beautiful here today as well. I think tomorrow the wind is supposed to blow, joy joy! I am really getting anxious to get started with landscaping and get some plants in the ground! Guess I'm still a country girl at heart. Your horseback riding sounds fun too, I would still enjoy that as well!
Mlw
I see on the weather window at the top of this page the temp is 57 in Howard, KS It is 55 here at Aransas Pass, TX.
??? ??? ??? ??? ??? ??? What's wrong with this picture ??? ??? ??? ??? ???
Jo, you've really had a much colder than normal winter there, and ugly weather besides!
Myrna
OH MY GOSH!!
At 6:30 this morning the thunder and lightening started and then at about 7 the (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v467/TMB/BluebirdNut/Emoticons/AllEmoticons/rain2.gif) started..
and it is STILL going.. it isn't that cold out.. but the rain!! And it isn't just drizzling.. It looks like it is a steady "set in for the day " rain.
Where is it going to go? My back yard is starting to look like a small swimming pool.
Even though it is raining ...I am still going to send you all something that will make you thankful that Spring is coming.
Click on the link below. You will get a blank page. Click your mouse anywhere (& everywhere) on the page & see what happens! Better yet, click & drag your mouse over the blank page...

Better look out, they'll start taxing us for lake-front property
here in beautiful down-town Howard [pronounced HORRID]! lol. Our back yard has small
ponds, a river runs on our west side, and of course the ditches out front get very full
even with just a brief shower. Much to our BBBL's liking! The neighbors love to watch
him make a wake as he runs through. :-\ ;D ;D ;D
Teresa I loved the flowers. Thanks :) :)
We were in Howard yesterday. The river was up and all the streams and creeks were running between Sedan and Howard. We didn't get much here in B'ville until last night. It is raining now and there is some thunder and lightning. Still not nearly as bad as south of Tulsa.
mlw
The weather here is gloomy. I am ready for the nice spring weather. Not sure on a rain total here, but the water was up quite a bit last night when I went home. My husband is feeding for people that went on Vacation and he said it was like a mud run on his route. I felt sorry for him yesterday, he was soaking wet when he got done feeding for all the people that he feeds for. He had to change clothes twice. Not much rain today, just no sun :( I was hoping for a nice spring break so that the kids and I could get the gardens ready during the week. Not sure that we can do that now!!! >:( >:( >:(
Cody just doesn't understand that it is too wet to go outside. He really wants to go out and go for a walk or go outside and play; especially with our new fenced in yard. He is avery demanding toddler and so we have gone for some walks (put him in his wagon) but I wish it would get nicer out so we could actually play outside.
I want to go out and walk and play inside my fenced in yard, too, Laura. It's not what I had planned for my spring break, but then I guess I don't get to say how the weather is going to be. I really wanted to rake and burn and trim and clean-up after this long winter since I have some limited time on my hands. Oh well, my floors inside are a little bit cleaner, my cupboards now a little bit more organized, and 3 written assignments completely completed. If it continues to rain, I may even paint my bedroom---Lord knows it needs something new and exciting!!! Maybe I'll see you and Cody when I am out walking in the rain.........but pray for sunshine!!!
Susan
:) The sun is shining the weather is great today!! :) The kids at the daycare and I took a walk already today!! We went up town and came back to the daycare. I only have 8 today, and only 2 that are 2 that rest are older. My husband said, "You can't go for a walk with that many kids", well you know what we did and they loved it. They helped some of the neighbors in our town, they picked up tree limbs along the way. And you know what they did not even hurt each other with them!! :) :) For this group, that is really good!!
Go outside and enjoy the day, if you can!! You never know, tomorrow might be another rainy day!!! :'( :'( :'(
I used to do that with my daycare kids as well they would love too take a walk we would call them nature or treasure walks and look for flowers leaves and rocks ect that they could bring back. The best thing was that if we did it just before lunch they all slept good at naptime lol ;D
Looks like it's going to be another beautiful day....except for the 40-mile an hour wind gusts we're suppose to have. >:(
Guess that means I can't finish painting corrals today. Yay!
Lane and I will start more seeds.
Another Beautiful day, its hard to believe. We took another walk today, and the only bad thing is the wind. But being from Kansas a little wind doesn't bother me!!! ;D ;D ;D
I can't wait to get outside with Cody. I had something to do this morning so couldn't be outside playing and then when I got home it was nap time for the little guy. But I have the windows open and when he gets up we will get outside to play. And maybe we will go for a walk.
I've got the windows open in my kitchen, living room, and bedrooms. A nice breeze is coming through and airing out the house. It's nice to get the stuffed up, winter smell out. You know what I'm talking about? The smell of your house being shut up all winter long. Ahh, spring, I'm glad you're here. LOL. :D
I will remind you girls of this when the April blizzard hits us. But enjoy it while you can.
March is our (the Denver area) biggest snow month and April is also a big one.
Almost five years ago today was our 40 incher.
OH snow doesn't bother me; remember I'm from Buffalo, NY. My parents just left here this morning to head back to snow on their ground. Last year when we had our Easter egg hunts at the school it snowed in the afternoon. That was funny, but also so cold (especially when the kids weren't really prepared for it). I'm just enjoying what we have for now. I know what you mean Devyn, my windows have been open today too getting that winter smell out of the house.
glad we aren't having the rains they are having east of us. Talked to the daughter in Missouri this morning and they ONLY had 8" compared to some of the surrounding areas. Said they lived on an island for a couple days. They are still planning to be here Sunday, however.
We spent the weekend in southern California. The weather was absolutely gorgeous! A little smog, but not too bad. It was in the 80's, the flowers were beautiful! The food was wonderful and it was great to see our daughter. Had a delay getting home last night and we were about an hour late, but other than that, it was a great weekend. It's 26 here this A.M., but supposed to get to the low 60's today. California is a great place to visit, but I don't think I could ever get used to the traffice and the cost of living is certainly much higher than here. The ocean was beautiful as we took off and looked down, the mountains had some snow on the high peaks. Anyway, hope all of you had a great Easter weekend.
mlw
What town does your daughter live in? We're in Escondido, which is in San Diego County. The way we handle the traffic is just to not get out in it, that's the advantage of being "retired." I still work part time, for the Chamber of Commerce, but it's just a couple of miles from our home, and of course, "NO" freeway traveling!
I'm glad you had a good week-end. I'm sure the planes were traveling "FULL" last evening. Spring break is ending for a lot of schools, which added to the Easter traffic for flying.
Wasn't the weather for our Easter Sunday just great? The little ones got to play outside, and hunt for eggs that had been "hidden" by the easter bunny while they were eating dinner. Everyone enjoyed the afternoon outside, and we even took our family pictures outside. Good thing, cause don't think I have room to get everyone together inside. Family is getting way too big, and I LOVE IT. Had 25 for dinner and a great time was had by all. :-\ Now I am trying to get everything back where it should be and all the "grass" off the carpet. ;D and Don't mind it a bit. Hope everyone's Easter was as great as mine.
;D ;D ;D seen that red "severe weather alert" at the top and figured I better check it out. Said the wind was gonna blow here today. Do tell ! ! ! ::)
Bonnie, our daughter lives in Signal Hill. It has a wonderful view from up there. On Friday night we went to an observation park, which had a tribute to the oil workers who were the original drillers, etc up there. There were observation posts that you could see LA, San Pedro, the bay area of Long Beach, etc. With all of the lights, it was absolutely beautiful. Yes, the planes were packed yesterday.
Our daughter drives the 405, I believe it is, to Torrance every day. She said it isn't really very far, but it takes 30-45 minutes depending on the traffice. With 5 lanes each way and an HOV as well, that's too much for me!
mlw
" that's too much for me!"
Me, too! We are just too old for that kind of driving. We go up that way on various trips with our Senior group from Church, and we usually go on a chartered bus. Those "guys" are good at driving in that kind of traffic, because they do it all of the time.
I'm glad you had a good time with your daughter and family. And, I know she was glad that you could come out and see them.
Well, I've been uptown, downtown, and around town today. Too bad I actually have to "work" this afternoon and stay inside. Well, at least until 5-ish... (can't you tell I'm working hard?)
You can tell spring is coming soon... the earliest sign of spring in the Flinthills are the smells... the SMOKE smells wafting in the air! Everyone is out burning today! Leaf piles, lawns, pastures, etc. Just think how pretty everything will smell once the smoke clears and you can smell the growing grass (and allergies REALLY kick in!).
What an absolutely beautiful day! I love it! I actually broke out in a sweat today.
I went to town this morning to take care of a few things and Lane stayed at the daycare. They planted seeds today and he loved it. We came home and cleaned up the house a bit. Then, we took a walk. Well, I walked and Lane drove (his John Deere tractor is battery-powered). We walked all the way to the intersection of Quail & Road 14, picking up aluminum cans along the way. We only picked up one pop can, the rest were beer! Then we trekked all the way to the intersection of Road 14 & Rock. Lane's little trailer was full of cans! We'll add them to the several trash bags of cans we have saved, then take them to El Dorado.
My okra seeds are coming up like crazy! The green beans have also started, as well as the lavender. The rest are just taking their sweet time. I have clothes hanging out on the line since there's a small breeze. I've got a dress to finish altering and then when Billy comes home we will be burning pasture. So, Howard, the smoke you see to the northwest this evening will be us!
We drove back from Wichita this evening and you could tell it is spring in the hills. We saw smoke in six different places on the way home, two of them in Elk County. It was almost perfect, a bit warm but the north wind made it feel cool. And when I got home, Janet had left two cookies in my mailbox. Jason's cookies of course and they were delicious. I am just going to have to go buy me some one of these days.
"Jason's cookies of course"
Who is Jason? I wish I had some of his cookies!
Bonnie they are wonderful. I am very lucky because his son comes to my daycare and every once in a while Laura brings in cookies for the kids. He works at Poplar Pizza in Howard. His dad owns it. Jason also makes wonderful cakes, too. So if you need any kind of baked goods, such as cookies and cakes you need to talk to him. He is the really tall guy that works there. I am not sure what else he bake, or yes he makes brownies, too. I just love his Walnut Wedding cake cookies. They are WONDERFUL!!! :P :P
The weather yesterday was outstanding. We worked up are garden at home. At the daycare, we planted seeds. We are going to have a garden in town, too. I can't wait. The only thing that worries me about this is time. I hope that I have the time to stay on top of two gardens to keep the weeds out. The kids at the daycare played outside this afternoon. Many of them were complaining that it was hot. If I was running around like they were I would be hot too.
I did take a walk and it was great!! I LOVE SPRING TIME!!! ;D ;D ;D
Maybe someone could start a little bakery and Jason could do the baking, then work at Poplar Pizza until it closes, then try to get some family time and sleep before time to get up and go bake again. What do you think, forum members. Don't you think he should do this for us?
I guess I better get in here.
It is spring and I am so happy......pain and allergies and all.
Yesterday was the first Baseball game here at Longton and I am so blessed to be able to keep the score
books.
No they didn't win. (Remember last year.?? I only got? to do an inning and a half, due to the rain)
This year I get to do the girls softball and the boys baseball.
I use to play and my family......all except mom played ball and lots of neices and nephews still play and do well.
since, I am an old lady my ball game playing is done.....but, I can still coach from the sidelines and moan when someone
slips up.
I managed to get almost 6 miles on my pedometer, yesterday.
Had a short walk in the morning and then when I went to the ball field, I went early enough that I could walk down to the river and since they don't have a port-potty this year........just had to walk to the bathroom and that is a good fast clip......since I am the book lady.
I am very happy spring is here and altho it is too early to get flowers out.......I am cleaning up my patch of yard and I feel Great.
In the next couple of weeks, the hummingbirds should be here and I am ready...........believe me, I am.
Have a great day......cloudy or rainy or sunshine it is a good day........and as good as you can make it.
Hugs and AOYP
Wilma,
Jason is baking all the time. He would love to open a bakery and maybe sometime soon that will happen. My husband is a busy man; baking in the morings or packaging cookies, etc., or doing something in the house, then goes to Poplar, comes home does some other things(might get in family time when we come home from school/daycare), goes back to Poplar, comes home around 10 at night and then does more baking. My parents were here just last week and they stayed in the apartment we have upstairs, they said Cody and I must dream of cookies and brownies from all the smells that are in our house at night. Right now I am smelling brownies. He loves to do it though.
What happened to that nice warm weather we had yesterday? It was okay today but not like yesterday. Alot of the kids at school today had on shorts with no coats, it was crazy.
Looks like Puxatawny Phil might have called it wrong this year, right, Diane? Just saw lots of snow flakes in your region on the national weather channel. You could say it is nice here, but I don't think so. Nice is when I can go outside and want to stay outside. The north wind is blowing, the sun is barely showing through the clouds and there is a possibiity of rain. Just the way the last of March should be. So what am I complaining about? I don't know. Haven't I always said Kansas is the place to be?
B-r-r-r Achoo! :P
Poor Phil! We need to send a blankey and hot toddy! ;) ;)
Ok. The storms are on. Last night the wind was terrible. I got up to check the weather to see what was happening, and all 3 girls got up. The older ones sleep upstairs and they really got scared. I felt bad for them, but come on 5 people in one bed is not comfortable. This morning when I was coming to town there were lots of little limbs in the roads along the way. But at Bertha Baumgartels place there was a big tree in the road, it must have been hit by lightning. It was split down the side. It could have just been the rain, but the way that it looks I don't know. Have a great day and Keep safe!! I think that we are in for a long stormy day!! :(
Please keep the Howard weather information updated today for those of us who live away from the area. We're always concerned about our houses there. We left Howard yesterday after spending the weekend there and encountered a tornado during the night that went right over our neighborhood in Edmond, OK outside of Oklahoma City. We had no damage, but it was pretty scary and a few homes within a mile of ours were totally demolished along with several that lost their roofs. It is dreary and windy again today with predictions for more storms tonight. Welcome to the Midwest.........................Happy Spring!
Right now, the sun is shining, just barely, but it is throwing shadows. We are still in a watch area until this evening. The front that is causing this is at Wichita so I think we will be having storms again this evening.
This weather is just just dandy. I live in a manufactured home, out in the middle of nowhere, with no basement. To say this weather scares me to death is an understatement. The first spring we lived there, Billy was at work in the middle of the day and Lane and I were alone. It was a very stormy day and suddenly we were in a tornado warning. Thunderstorms alone scare me...so I was a nervous wreck! Dan and Joetta weren't home, otherwise I would have gone to their place...So Lane and I went to the culvert at the end of the driveway and sat there for a bit with the weather radio. I was so very scared!!! Billy still laughs about that story to this day, but I'd rather be safe than sorry!!!
It is very humid here today, so we'll see what happens this evening.
Just read this at KAKE 10's website.....
At least one Kansas school is sending
students home early because of the violent weather moving through
the state.
High winds tore off part of the roof of Lyndon High School in
Osage County early Monday, so officials sent students home at 8:30
a.m. so they could assess the extent of damage.
Similar damage may be taking place as strong winds, large hail
and heavy rain make their way through parts of the state and
forecasters predict more of the same for much of the day.
Residents of Labette report that flooding in the southeast
Kansas town is affecting some property. In Dickenson, a spotter
reported hail nearly two inches in diameter overnight, and reports
of winds near 70 miles per hour through the eastern half of the
state are common.
A tornado watch is in effect until 4 p.m. for a portion of Kansas. Kansas counties under the watch are Bourbon, Chautauqua, Cherokee, Cowley, Crawford, Elk, Labette, Montgomery, Neosho and Wilson.
Don't people build storm cellars any more?
I want to tell you that my daycare is in a mobile home. I hate that about it. I wish we would have put it in the home on the place we bought instead of renting it out. But I am seriously thinking about building a storm shelter. The good thing is that my daycare is not to far from the High School and the principal told me that we could come over there if the weather was ever bad. But right now it is sunny, but I am sure that we are in for more today!! :(
Elk County has been removed from the warning for the time being. I wouldn't be too sure about later today.
Tania Mills my niece who is in Colby, said her car was totally iced over this morning and my sister said it is colder than blue blazes in Mullinville. ( out by Dodge City.)
Then you have Nebraska with low temps in the 20"s and Western Ks in the 30'
s..here it is high 68-70.... THAT is a tornado begging to happen tonight.
Temps here are dropping just a bit but still easily t-shirt weather..
We had a huge limb off one of our trees split off last night and now it is just hanging.. so that is something that will have to be taken care of.. plus we lost some shingles off the shed. The wind was horrible at around 3 this morning. and weather radiop said it was up to 60 mph..
Yuck!
I am sure the wind was up to 60. I was up and listened to it. It popped and creaked my metal roof all around. I liked the idea of a metal roof so I could hear the weather and I certainly can.
Wow.. this weather has got cold.
Going form 71 this morning to 46 now.. THAT is a huge drop.. but it at least maybe gets us out of the tornado vortex.
daughter of a friend lost the roof off her barn a few miles west of Emporia. Talked to the daughter in Mo. tonite (karmablvr) and she said there was extensive wind damage in Neosho MO. Seen the weather map and it showed a lot of bright red and West Plains MO was right in the middle. Guess I better call Lewis' uncle and ck on him.
Hello from the Smoky Hills! Actually, still in the Flint Hills, but looks like the BLACK Hills, today! Good, brisk North wind and EVERYONE decided to burn today. My hubby was almost crawling out of his skin with excitement this morning! ;D He and a bunch of neighbors were going to light up everything on top of the hill today. I don't know exactly, but I was thinking 10,000 acres they'll burn in one fell swoop. Plus, the wild horse ranch. They may as well have just lit a match at 400 and let it burn to Grenola!
I can relate to your hubby Tobina.. :D
We are going to burn our lake property tomorrow night and I am as excited as a kid at Christmas..
I love burning time. Lots of hard work .. but I don;t care. I still have fun doing it. :)
Chuck made it in at 10:00 last night! Although, not too smokey; I was surprised! Guess he stayed up-wind enough... and there was enough wind to blow the smell off! Pretty much from Road 9 and Killdeer, south to Flint Road, and I think West to Road 5 is blackened. Then West from there and South from there, too, as those neighbors let it burn all the way through them! He doesn't know how much the wild horse ranch has, but he still thought 10K acres was a good estimate. He was exhausted, but glad to have it done! He'll do a little more today with a South wind, and the horse pasture here by the house (and we can work on the old nasty trash pile out there, too - leftover from the old house). With this sunshine and rain forecasted later in the week, it won't take long for everything to green back up, though!
Enjoy your burning day, Teresa! It makes everything look like such a clean start! Nature's way of spring cleaning!
Burning was the Indian way of creating green grass to lure the buffalo back to their hunting grounds. I can see the sense in that but I still wonder about the wildlife that it affects. I always hated seeing a rabbit or birds running to get away from the fire. I suppose some nests were destroyed, also, but I think if a bird loses it's nest they just start over.
I always worry about the wildlife, too. Especially when they set such a large area on fire at once. But then again, Chuck said some of the neighbors didn't even worry about moving their cows! The cows just found an area that was green and didn't seem too bothered. My biggest worry is the rabbits; I've heard about them catching fire and then running through the grass catching even more grass on fire (places that weren't supposed to be burned or close to houses)! That's what we'll have to be careful about this afternoon when we burn close to the house.
oh my gosh.. I wished I hadn't read that! Poor babies.. I am always very sure that I kick out anything in a brush pile before I light it. Sometimes an ugly rat come s running out.. and it makes me cringe.. but I still wouldn't want it to burn..
Facts of life, Teresa, facts of life. We can't keep everything safe all the time as much as we would like to. We can just recognize the facts and empathize with the little critters and trust in the Lord to keep them safe.
Teresa; how did your burn day go yesterday? Get it all done before the sprinkles set in? We got the horse pasture burned off (although spotty). I got to ride along on the 4-wheeler to help "string fire". Kind of a fun experience... after you got over the fear of having the propane torch shooting flames and bouncing along right next to your leg! :o Unfortunately, the trash pile didn't burn hardly at all. Too much glass and sheetrock. I think we'll need a really dry day and lots of gas (or something that burns like gas that isn't so expensive!).
yes, all animals need to be protected when you can, however, Mother Nature has a way of keeping them under control, right? If all of them were allowed to survive, over-population, disease and starvation would take over.
burn went good Tobina.. Barbie Morgon and I were the only girls out there and we were the fire setters. The rest had water tanks on their 4 wheelers and were keeping things under control as some of the adjoining owners didn't want their burnt..
Of course, I had 2 camera's hanging around my neck..trying to film at intervals and then a propane burner hooked over my arm and lighting fires.. I got so neat footage and I'll make a video ( if and when I get time)
We had fun though and it will look so pretty when it startes to green back up. It started sprinkling right when we got done, so we lucked out.
Today is as typical of April as it can get. The sun trying to come out on one side of the house while the other side is dark and gray. Light wind and temperature almost 60. My rain guage shows and inch and a half and my river is full. The grass is green, the tulips are red, the roads are muddy and I am staying off them. Had enough of that in my younger days. Now if my peas are coming up, I will be happy. By the way, they are forecasting freezing temperatures for Saturday night. You might watch that if you have tender plants outside.
You forgot about the WIND!!!!!!!!
It wasn't windy then.
Having a tough time finding a sheltered place to set the seedlings for a little dose of the real world. The wind is so strong, they can't take it. They come in the house looking like tangled spaghetti, kinda like my hair. :o :o
No kidding about the wind!!! I swear if I sit real still I can feel my house up here on the hill moving. But then again, maybe it's my imagination.
We had a big Nor' Easter hit here last night and the cold wind is still blowing with lots of rain. It's only 46 now and I can smell fire places burning all over the neighborhood. We still have power, many don't and there is big wind damage all over. We only lost two medium sized branches but there are some huge trees down in some areas. Some of the beach communities have been evacuated because of off shore winds pushing the high tides higher than normal. What happened to our spring? We did have fairly decent weather on Sat. and until late afternoon yesterday so we did get to sell flowers for our fire Co. So you know where I was for the weekend.
Well, temperature wise it is around 75, but you just wouldn't believe it but the wind is blowing here. I think that there are more days when the wind blows than not.
But the wind is supposed to blow there! It's in the contract. That's why clothes line dry so nicely there.
Maybe so Diane, but when they are drying in your neighbors' yards down the street, it takes a lot of the "charm" out of it! ;D
Was that a "windy" day or just a "breezy" day??
;D ;D ;D ;D
Good point! ;D
Somewhere between windy and breezy. Breezy is when they stand straight out on the clothesline and windy is when they have absolutely disappeared.
You are so right, Wilma..........I was thinking about washing bedding today and hanging it on the line, but I sure don't feel
like getting whipped when I hang them up and then watching to see if I need to catch them.
I will wait a few days.........and we are not real sure we won't get rain today and I am tired from my trip and I also want to
get a few more flowers in containers and that will be my day.
I had a windy weekend....but not to bad. First night at Mom and Dad's we had about 1/2 inch of rain with mothball size hail in it
but that was all.
The wind is why Kansas would make a natural Wind Farm.......and I would rather see that than a coal mine........what say you.
Guess that should be in a different topic.
If I don't forget I will ask that question. Have a great day..
It has been another beautiful day in southeast Kansas. Temperature in the 80's, hardly any wind, no rain and not needing it yet. How has it been in your neighborhood?
It's warm out our way. For those people who like warm weather, it's been a "perfect day" for them! The ideal temperature for me is between 70º and 75º! :) :)
Been warm here too Bonnie! They are expecting upper 80's for the next several days; quite a change from the lovely 70's we have been having. I hope we don't have to turn on the AC until June anyway. We'd like a little breather from the high gas bills last winter!
I hope we get some of that while you are in Kansas, Bonnie. That's the way I like it , too.
I am so glad the sun is out. Our wind is out of the Northwest and if not for the sun, my apartment would be cold.
I know I can shut the windows.....but I DON'T WANT TO!!!!..........I will head out to sit in the sun soon.
I sat and or worked out in it yesterday and have the spring fever bug........I can always find a weed to pull and or a flower
to smell......(LOL......course with my allergies I sneeze a lot) but that is my spring.
I need lots of sunshine to bake the arthritis back into hibernation.
Have a good day, all.
Bonnie, have a safe trip.
Our Memorial Day parade was washed out today. It's a shame as we have the biggest one in Delaware. So-o-o, we worked on our trip schedule and made some reservations. We thought we'd help out your local economy, so we are booked into Crooked Creek Lodge at Moline for June 10, 11, 12, and 13. We'll check out Caney and Howard of course and maybe we' ll see a few of you at Toots.
I'm sorry it "rained on your parade!"
Sounds like you'll have a great trip, enjoy!
;D Have a great trip Bonnie. I expect you to tell me about your trip before we leave on ours, so you can warn me about anything we need to know. :-*
I can do that! The report will all be "good," I'm sure!
It's a little warm here today.... I left Yuma, AZ this afternoon where it was 115 degrees
and got home in Surprise and noticed it was 110 degrees ( new record) on my back patio.
As I'm writing this, it is almost 1 a.m. and the temp is 94. Hopefully it will drop down to 80
by 5 a.m. so I can walk the dog and he can do his duty. I guess summer has arrived. :(
Talk about contrast. We're barely 50 here, and thats not normal for us, we should be in the 70s. I'll send you some of ours, if you send us some of yours.
It's not as warm here today as it was yesterday. It's still nice, but very windy. Lane and I have been gardening and hauling flat rocks from the rock fence that surrounds Chip & Nancy's land. We're making new flower beds. We planted more seeds. I just wanted to be outside to work on my tan. :D
It has been a gorgeous day here! We had to go to Sedan for some blood work, but I did make to Well Adjusted Plants. I have managed to stay away until now; it is so hard not to verdo. I did buy some geraniums, begonias, lobelia, dianthus, and a water plant for my tub. I could have stayed half the day; Joan has many lovely things, and loves to talk and show plants when she has time. We got home in time for a little nap and then I planted some things in my front bed, fixed my two baskets for the porch, and planned what to do tomorrow. We have tomatoes ready to bloom, so it won't be long now! Enjoy everyone!
It's been pretty nice here today, but we've been having record breaking cold sweeping down from the great lakes...it was in the 40s last night... should start warming up some again tomorrow and be 90 by next Tuesday. Go figure. This is EMS Week and station 9 did a slow smoked pork and beef brisket barbecue for lunch. One of our firefighters has a smoker and knows how to use it, yummy. That makes me think of summer for sure.
Diane you made my stomach growl!! I made pulled pork last night and it was delicious!! I could smell it all day and it does make you think of summer.
Just had to talk about this one. Yesterday, Thursday, I picked up my granddaughter from pre-school at noon and we stopped at the local park to play on the playground. The weather was somewhat breezy and cool requiring us to wear our sweatshirts. After about an hour, it was time to go home and have lunch. We did lunch and then it was nap time. This is our usual routine on the days she stays with me. When we dozed off, it was a little windier and a little cooler and cloudy. We were awakened by loud claps of thunder and some rain began to fall. The weather man the evening before had predicted a 20 percent chance of rain. ::) It began to fall harder and the wind was really blowing hard and then it began to hail, not real big hail, but hail. :o In the 40 years I have lived here, I have only seen hail one other time. We are about 500 feet above sea level, so hail and/or snow at this level is rare. Then it started to ease off and I thought the storm had passed, but it was like it went around the block and came back even stronger than the first time. We lost power intermittenly which cut off my internet and satellite TV. I turned to my granddaughter and said, "Toto, I think we are back in Kansas!!!".
The weather yesterday was nasty! I was in Longmont, CO during the tornadoes that hit North of there. It sounds like there was a lot of damage, including the new Swift packing plant; lifted the roof right off it! The sirens went off in Longmont, but no one seemed concerned; they thought it was an ambulance siren! Luckily, the storms had cleared off by the time I flew out of DIA. Not even that bad of turbulance during take-off. But we had to wait a while to take-off, as all the other delayed flights were in line in front of us. You could tell when we went over the storms West of Wichita, though... wow, what a bumpy ride! My parents in NW KS were out of the storms' paths, but just East of there in Oberlin they had some damage to quite a few homes. Hopefully the bad weather will stay away this weekend!
Tobina, I'm glad you missed the storm. It sure was an ugly thing. We had friends long ago in Oberlin, sorry to hear they had damage. My mother's father died there in 1971. Had a car accident while there visiting the friends, then had a heart attack and died at the scene. Sad memories. I just remember it being the land of miles and miles of miles and miles. ;D Would you all please get all this bad weather cleared out before we come? Detours into storm cellars are not on our rather tight schedule!!! :P
Why Diane, that's exactly what we are trying to do! We've had our yearly quota of flooding rains, hail, lots of thunder & lightening and even some pretty windy storms. June will probably be plenty dry and blisteringly hot... wasn't that what you ordered? ;D
You can keep the blisters, but a nice bit of Kansas June heat is fine. I've been there in June for most of our visits over the years, so I know what that's like.
Attention! We have a tornado watch until 4:00 AM! If you'all see one, just call me, I'm gonna go to bed pretty quick. This has been one of those days when I could not get out of the kitchen! It culminated tonight when I sat down to check the postings on the computer, and the smoke alarm went off. I had put some chicken parts on to cook, and the lid that I used to partially cover the pot had fallen over the top. This allowed the broth to spatter into the flame and caused the smoke. Of course I had to clean the entire stove, all the pans in the storage drawer, and the floor in the front. Yuk!!! Double Yuk!! So I am in no mood--- do ya hear? I just do not want to hear about any tornado tonight!
Just FYI (no need for panic), SE KS (including Eastern Elk County) is in a tornado watch until 10 pm this evening. Radar over the southern part of the US is completely clear at this point, but it just means conditions are conducive to creating tornados. Keep your TV's and radios on this evening and just stick close to home!
Look who else thinks the ground is too wet. On the outside of my living room window this morning.
We were discussing this morning about butchering these mosquitos and putting them in the freezer for winter. We could have them stir fried with sweet and sour dog hair! LOL! :P :P
DL; sounds like you need some SwampWalkers! I asked for rubber boots for my birthday to muck around the garden and lawn on rainy days, and hubby gave me some serious camo SwampWalkers! I must admit they are comfy, though, and tall. And less likely to get sucked off my feet! So if you see me walking around in my shorts and Swampwalkers this summer, laugh WITH me, not at me!
My husband got me a pair of the Muck boots. They are wonderful. My oldest daughter wears them alot though, especially lately. They were kinda pricey, but well worth the money. With all the rain, I have gotten alot of use out of them!!!
DL; go for the fall decor. It's not too early! Heck, stores even have Halloween decor AND Christmas decor out already! Seems like it comes faster each year.
You know, I think we seemed to have had a mild summer. I only remember about a week's worth of days over 100.
We're having weird weather here. It was glorious last week, cool and dry, but now we're almost 90 with rising humidity and the threat of a sideswipe from Hanna on Saturday. We could really use the rain but they can keep the wind. I have a girlfriend at Wilmington N.C. very close to Wrightsville Beach. (She's the one whose grandson was tied to a tree for punishment by his father and left to die back in June.) I hope they don't get hit too hard by the storm.
The first day of fall is Sept. 22.
My favorite season. I love to cook something delicious in the oven for supper, and don't forget the brownies and chocolate chip cookies. I can't stand to turn the oven on in the summer.
Love a good football game, sweatshirt weather, cool nights for sleeping, apple pie, burning leaves, rosy red cheeks and clothes that smell fresh like the cold air outdoors.
Bring it on!
The plants are on the porch or in the house, the veggies have all been picked, the deck furniture has been secured....bring on Hanna! The rain will start later tonight and tomorrow will be tough. :P I hope we don't lose any more trees. The home football game tomorrow should be interesting. If they have it.
Hang on tight Diane! We are still basking on the tail end rain and cool of Gustav, am I lovin' it! Hope Hannah blows herself out before she gets there, God bless!
I'm freezing !
Sitting in my office with all the windows open and the house windows open is making me cold.
( I can't bring myself to shut them cause I LOVE fresh rain air..
I really am ready for cooler weather.. but it is gonna take me awhile to get used to it.. LOL
It's 74 here and pouring! We need the rain so much, I'm glad to put up with it. So far Hanna's winds haven't been too bad and I think the worst is west of us. Now we can all watch out for Ike.
I have been wondering how you were faring Diane. Thanks for keeping us posted! And yes we do need to watch for Ike!
At least we are not battling hurricanes. ;D

How funny !!!!
I do feel so sorry for all along the coast that have been under so much turmoil because of all the storms.
Love the cartoons! We're fine. The area had some flooding and a lot of rain and some wires down, but not too bad at all.
Very Funny for us...............LOL.
I always wondered if the population was getting so huge that California was going to fall off into the ocean,
Looks like Florida may be first.
Sure am glad I am where I am..........only thing need worry about is whether the river is going out or
if prairie is dry enough fires are an issue.
Don't you know each of us has to deal with Mother-Nature and weather and it looks like this time it is going to be a real heavy time.
God watch over each and every one of these souls.

Have you heard any rumors about an ark? Pretty soon we're gonna have to wear those little pool floaties to get across the yard!
No not yet........if I remember right He did promise He would not flood the world. again....like in Noah's time.
altho He has warned the masses of the time to come.
We (my gauge) had 3 inches from 8 AM Thursday till this morning at 8.........I am sure the river will get out again..
don't plan on going any where soon.
At this moment the rain has stopped.....I think I will make a run to post office.......as I have some medicine and hopefully the paper will be here today.
Hugs and stay dry......and if not get use to it........it is here for a while.........I thought Kansas was safe from hurricane's.....looks like this will be one of the "Big ONES!"
judy
Well, personally I can do without this rain. Makes for dreary days not to mention Arthur seems to visit more often and stay longer, right Judy? However, across the alley east of me there is forming a lake that looks like it might be good fishing, but :'( I gave my fishing pole to the youngest daughter, so no fresh fish for supper tonite. My rain gauge shows approx. 2 3/4 in. which is ENOUGH ALREADY ! ! ! >:( >:(
Flo,
Arthur has been smashing into me for the last week or so.......which does mean the weather has gone to HECK
now since I also have a nasty cold......nose won't stop running and am getting a cough.....I think I will spend the day on the sofa with a blanket and book.........(maybe NAP!!) and oh, since this is a weather theme.........will mention that
I really wish we could get a few more HOT days before winter........
I can already feel the cabin-fever............course, it is the rainy weather....but I do dread the winter months.,
Oh, well "this too shall pass"
Stay dry.
Judy
Judy ,have you ever tried Cymbalta for your muscle pain? Al's Dr. had him try a very low dose recently for his Polio muscle pain and it has helped him a lot.
I had to drain my driveway yesterday afternoon. The run-off from the pasture to the West comes down the hill and into our driveway, and then down our driveway towards the house. So I cut out some drainage ditches on the side of the driveway, so the water can flow to the East, rather than towards the house. I got wet. Except for my feet; sure am glad I have made use of those birthday swamp-walkers this summer!
My poor tomatoes are just sitting on the vine, nice and green, waiting for some sun to make them red! LOTS of them! Once it heats up/IF it heats up, I'll be swimming in little toms.
Wichita is preparing for floods; maybe even like the flood of 1998, they said on the news.
I can't believe it......I see SUNSHINE...............YIPEE AND YAHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO.
kind of muggy, but with all this water around I understand why.
I kind of figure, this is the lull before the next storm.
Diane, I am on a the generic form of cymbalta and take a double dose a day............it does help......but that doesn't stop the fibromyagia predicting the rain/moisture that is coming.
I am easy for now....it is just this durn cold I am dealing with and I may have a slight touch of the "Runs" I was told flu is going around and as stressed out as I am right now...........that is JUST what I need.
Judy
Judy, Al just asked me to ask you what the generic name is.
There is no generic for Cymbalta in the United States yet. It must be a different drug, not Cymbalta.

jprxmkt: Don't look now, but you have an echo wherever you're posting from! OH, and since this is the weather thread, I wonder if it has anything to do with all this rain?!!
My gauge says 3 and 1/2 inches and Flo, you could come fish in my river if you had a pole. I gave up all of mine, too.
A friend of mine in Wichita sent this e-mail to me and thought I would pass this on as it may really effect Elk Co as well. I know here in Springfield everyone is really watching and trying to figure out how this may effect us. Yesterday when I dropped off donations at the MS Society they were watching the forecast carefully. Some of the areas we will be going through are prone to flash flooding. There are over 900 riders and 500 volunteers so it would take a lot to cancel it, but it would take more to have us all scattered through the countryside on a bad day.  Anyway, here is the message.
Subject: FYI ONLY - they've held a news conference here on KAKE TV regarding rainfall amts predicted for
Wichita and I got this email from a friend who got it from USD 259 (our school district) so the powers that be are taking this serious! I sit on a very high hill one of the highest points I think in Wichita so do not worry about me if my phone goes out – I will just have major cabin fever if I get "rained in"! I've let Nancy know also. This happened in Great Bend in 1981 – all flooded out in a matter of hours – it started raining late in afternoon and didn't quit till early AM next day –pouring like buckets –
Read this from USD 259 -
This is a weather update that was received from a friend who has a sister who works for USD 259. She always has special access to special weather info because she activates clean up crews for USD 259
It read -
I realize our weather here is no comparison (to Houston) to there. But, a seldom seen event is occurring here in that our county disaster preparedness manager has issued an activation of the EOC (emergency operations center which is housed in the basement of the county courthouse) beginning tomorrow (Friday) as it is probable that we will see double digit rainfall totals here by Monday morning. Activating the EOC puts all major city/county responder entities into effect. They are saying it will be a lot like our Halloween '99 flood. Our EOC is seldom activated except during times of significant weather damage. It's really kind of scary. I'm sure the grocery stores will be packed all weekend long.
Do you know that is what my husband said that John Wiseman was saying at Lannings, that we would see double digits by Monday. I remember those floods. I was driving back and forth to Wichita finishing up school and I couldn't make it to class then. We are in for a fun weekend!!!

I am sorry,
the generic name of the med I am taking is DiClofenac
I have forgotten the real name......I just know that taking one 75 mil in morning and again at night I am doing much better.
I also take Chlorzoxazone 500 MG 3 times a day and I must say even tho I can't pronounce them they are helping.
I was having as much problems with Charley-Horses.......leg cramps as bad as the they had ever been.
I did have to change medicines cause I had been on the one kind almost 3 years and (naproxen) it wasn't doing its job.
I am sure that Julie can tell you what their original names are/were......after all she is my drug person....oh and Barb.
thanks girls for taking such good care of us all.
Thanks! :-*

Diclofenac is generic for Voltaren
Chlorzoxazone is generic for Parafon Forte.
Not that anyone cares but me. :D
I care, Julie. I depend on you.
Thanks ;D
jprxmkt, I have a feeling that you are a Pharmacist and I just put two and two together. Some of us are far away and sometimes it takes us a while to connect all the dots of who is local to Howard. Do you know someone that drinks a lot of Mt. Dew and posts on the forum?
David
Well, as I say, we are only related by marriage. ;D
No......She doesn't know me at all.
Shoot maybe I didn't connect the dots. ??? ;)
Please tell me you are not sitting right next to each other posting. That would just be too cute for my image of Pep.
I have a totally isolated workstation with no female influences what so ever.
There are even half naked pictures on the walls.
Patrick Nagel but half naked just the same.
I made her get her own computer because she always wants to use mine because I always buy the biggest and fastest of everything. She was so against the purchase I make her use the 286mhz for all her girlie posting.
15 years of "wedded bliss"
I actually have signed Nagel's I bought in the 80'S 90's myself.
Oh, and the weather is great here in Belmont California this time of year.
David
I am glad this is a weather thread because it is about to get stormy up in here.
If you see lightning south of town ignore it as it is just the bliss part.

Thanks, Julie...I hadn't gotten my PDR out yet. Uh,.....We're expecting rain. ;D
Yesterday afternoon's reprieve from the rain was brief but appreciated ... it's raining again, so here it comes! I'm glad I could drop off the recyclables before it started. I'm also grateful to have all the fixin's on hand for an Italian veggie soup. Perfect for an indoor weekend, yes?
Wilma, what's the latest in your rain gauge?
This is a picture my son sent from his area in Houston.
Another picture from Ike's damage.
Frank, was that the home of your son, where the tree had fallen into the home? How is he doing this morning? The storm looks really bad.
No, Bonnie it was one in the area. I have talked to him several times, he says he doesn't think he has any damage, trees or house, his fences are all standing, apparently a lot of fences and trees are down in the area. They have no power, he has his cell phone and his laptop, plenty of food and water. We are thankful that Deb and the kids are here with us. He said they are getting alot of rain but no flooding in his area.
Frank
A computer geek friend fixed us up so I could watch live streaming from KPRC, KRIF, KHOU and KTRK last night. I stayed up much too late. I'm glad your son's alright. It looks like part of downtown lost some windows. Update as you can please.
Thanks Diane, I appreciate it.
I have a VERY PREGNANT Granddaughter in Austin (she is due about the 7th or 9th of October.......
I haven't heard from her for awhile and think we all should be praying that this storm will die down and not do
any more damage than it has.
God watch out for all those in the way and for those who are affected.
Judy
Frank, I'm glad you have heard from your son and that he is okay. When I was watching all this on TV last night, and it hadn't even hit land yet, all I could think about was Frank and Myrna's son down there in this - hope he's far enough away to be safe. Good news, indeed.
Thanks Flo, it looks like he will be fine.
Frank
To lighten things up a bit..................... ;D

Before everyone thinks I am a terrible, prejudiced, horrible person, just wanted to send a copy of the letter I sent to the Times editors and Bill O'Reilly. Please pray that Hurricane Ike will NOT come to Louisiana -
I don't think I have the attitude of Christ yet!
Sherri
Dear Editor,
I am a nurse who has just completed volunteer working approximately 120 hours as the clinic director in a Hurricane Gustav evacuation shelter in Shreveport , Louisiana over the last 7 days. I would love to see someone look at the evacuee situation from a new perspective.
Local and national news channels have covered the evacuation and "horrible" conditions the evacuees had to endure during Hurricane Gustav.
True - some things were not optimal for the evacuation and the shelters need some modification.
At any point, does anyone address the responsibility (or irresponsibility) of the evacuees?
Does it seem wrong that one would remember their cell phone, charger, cigarettes and lighter but forget their child's insulin?
Is something amiss when an evacuee gets off the bus, walks immediately to the medical area, and requests immediate free refills on all medicines for which they cannot provide a prescription or current bottle (most of which are narcotics)?
Isn't the system flawed when an evacuee says they cannot afford a $3 copay for a refill that will be delivered to them in the shelter yet they can take a city-provided bus to Wal-mart, buy 5 bottles of Vodka, and return to consume them secretly in the shelter?
Is it fair to stop performing luggage checks on incoming evacuees so as not to delay the registration process but endanger the volunteer staff and other persons with the very realistic truth of drugs, alcohol and weapons being brought into the shelter?
Am I less than compassionate when it frustrates me to scrub emesis from the floor near a nauseated child while his mother lies nearby, watching me work 26 hours straight, not even raising her head from the pillow to comfort her own son?
Why does it incense me to hear a man say "I ain't goin' home 'til I get my FEMA check" when I would love to just go home and see my daughters who I have only seen 3 times this week?
Is the system flawed when the privately insured patient must find a way to get to the pharmacy, fill his prescription and pay his copay while the FEMA declaration allows the uninsured person to acquire free medications under the disaster rules?
Does it seem odd that the nurse volunteering at the shelter is paying for childcare while the evacuee sits on a cot during the day as the shelter provides a "daycare"?
Have government entitlements created this mentality and am I facilitating it with my work?
Will I be a bad person, merciless nurse or poor Christian if I hesitate to work at the next shelter because I have worked for 7 days being called every curse word imaginable, feeling threatened and fearing for my personal safety in the shelter?
Exhausted and battered,

bus to Wal-mart, buy 5 bottles of Vodka
They sell vodka at Wally World? Seriously?
Other states do allow liquor to be sold in locations other than liquor stores. In Missouri, for example, you can purchase hard liquor at the grocery store. I don't know if it's a county/city by county/city basis, but when I lived in KC, the grocery stores in MO had hard liquor. I assume since Walmart is pretty much considered a grocery store, they can sell hard liquor there, too. There are other states where you can purchase beer by the can/bottle/HUGE bottle in gas stations! Don't you think that's just encouraging drinking and driving?
Well, I learned something new today!
Here in Missouri WalMart does have a liquor department. All the convenience stores sell various alcohol. You can buy the cold large cans or bottles of beer at the local convenience store.
Rain, rain, come again soon.
We don't want a rainless June.
I am dry, very dry.
Yes, we do need a little rain!
The winds are blowing again in Oklahoma, and all that rain from several weeks ago is long gone!!!!!
Just be patient, girls.
Remember, this is Kansas.
