Post by: archeobabe on November 14, 2007, 06:19:05 PM
The painting is of a tornado, if you haven't guess already, done in oil on a 8X10 masonite board.  I was trying to show the power, strength, and danger of a Kansas.

I working on making the attachment work.  So, bear with me while I am working this out.

Thank you, I enjoy painting it.  My instructor was very pleased on how I portray the painting.  The grade I received from my class is an "A".

This a painting of church in Paola, Kansas.  I contacted the chamber of commerce and they did not recognize the church.  On the history of Paola, there was five churches that would be this church:  Congregational Church, First Baptist Church, The First Presbyterian Church, The Colored Baptist Church, and The African Methodist Episcopal Church.  If anyone can recognize the denomination, please let me know.  This painting is done in oil on 8X10 masonite board.  The photo (black and white) was taken at the turn of the century.  The top of the steeple in a gold cross ontop a ball or cup.

Do you have more? My mom was a professional free lance commercial artist and taught classes too. I love to see people's work. You are doing great!

She has more.  My favorite is the prairie dogs she did from a black and white snapshot from a newspaper.  It hangs on MY living room wall.

Yes, I have paintings: a cowboy leaning against the barn door jam in the sunset, a large mouth bass jumping out of water, several paintings of old school houses (one in Cheney, Kansas), a barn with silo and more. I have collected several photos that I am planning to paint after I arrange my house so I can set up my studio.

Big Mouth Bass -  Arcylic 12X 14 painted in 1973

I do because it keep my hands busy.  I have sold a couple of my paintings in the past I which I had no photos of them.  The first painting I sold was of Santa Fe steam engine and the Silva, Kansas train station (made out of bricks) and the second was of a barn owl.  I still had the photos and outlines so I can paint them again.  I hope that I can show my work in a gallery in the future.

Here is a couple of more paintings:

Cowboy leaning against the barn jam  oil 18X20 done in knife  1985
Barn with silo  arcylic 16X18  1974

You have developed your own style, which is evident in each of your paintings...very nice!  You are learning to do clouds very well.  I really like what you are doing.  And you've sold some?  That's great!

I learned to paint clouds in the 1973.  My instructor, at that time, and I had a disagreement on the clouds on the barn painting. I wanted to show a storm coming up but she suggested that paint the end of the storm.  She won.  I enjoy painting landscapes especially  the clouds.  That is from living in the counties of Elk and Greenwood.  I wish that more people could see the beauty that the Flint Hills can offer.

The painting that I am posting has a little story behind it.  It was the last painting I did in class.  I wanted to protray the chalk mounments in Gove county with a thunderstorm behind them.  Since Kansas was underwater during ancient time with sea reptiles and sharks that swam in the water.  I painted the thunderhead as giant wave with the sea repitles and chark swimming out of the thunderhead.  My instructor was very impress with the painting.

The 2nd photo proves that saying by W. C. Fields: Don't work with children and animals.

On my last post, I stated the you shouldn't work with children and animals.  The photo proves it.

Bud lets us know that it is time to set down and give him some attention or he feels that we rest in the recliners.

Here is another painting I did for my painting class.  It's done in oil on a 8X10 masonite board.  The photo is one that I took in Wichita for my photo class.  The building is located on the corner of Emporia and Williams.  I thought that it was going to be torn down for the arena site which it would be a shame.  It was a dance studio possibly in the 1930s then a funeral parlor.  Now, it had been spared from the wrecking ball.  A antique dealer bought the building and is planning to restore it, put in an antique store on the ground floor, and apartments on the second floor.

She is going to turn this painting the right way when she gets on again.  The unique thing about this painting is that the building disappears when viewed from a few feet away.  At ten feet it looks like an uninteresting landscape, then when one gets close, the building appears.  It was supposed to be titled "Ghost Building", then they decided to save the building and it won't be a ghost.  Wish you all could see it that way.  Unfortunately the illusion doesn't show up in the photograph.

I'm sure glad you explained that. I thought the perspective was a little uh, unusual  ;D

Thanks!  Yesterday I turned my lap top on its side and used a magnifying glass to really look at it.  I really enjoy the clever idea.  Have you hung that one in a show?  It would show well, I think . Old fashioned, yet very modern at the same time.

No, I haven't have any of my paintings in shows.  But I had my paintings critique by other instructors at Wichita State University and they gave me encourgement to further my paintings.  One of the instructors suggested that research the photos of school and other buildings to get their history and possible write a book on the subjects.

I, also, take photos of objects and houses that I find very interesting.  The first photo is of a house in Howard that was possibly built in the late 1800s or in the early 1900s.  The second photo is of glass prisims arranged in the shape of a snowflake placed on a glass plate with light beneath.  I used 35mm camera on all my black and white photos.  It took two semesters to understand and manage the camera, enlarger, and developing photos.

I dare ya to paint those glass prisms! Glass is pretty tricky to do well. Bet ya can! ;)

I probably could do them in a chalk drawing on very white paper but I thought about painting the prisims.

A very nice still life. If this was done in class, is it your own ''style" or the style of someone you were studying. It's a little "Hopper''ish. I like it. You did well with the bottles. I did one once that was supposed to be in the style of Gauguin. I hated it, but got a good grade.

The instructor set up the still life and the class painted it.  I believe that my style is "Edward Hopper" since I did two of his paintings in class at Wichita State University.

Aha!  I thought so, not that I can spell the poor man's name.  Hooper?  Now that's funny!  Or maybe that's some other artist....sure, that's it ...Edwina Hooper. No?   Anyway, you do nice work. Your instructors must enjoy working with you.

There is a "Hooper".  I look him up on the internet and found out that he is still living.  His style is posters and the style is of the 1930s and 1940s.  The artist "Gauguin" is very difficult to paint his style especially when he uses bright colors.
