Title: Riddle in Rhyme
Post by: Teresa on February 03, 2006, 10:56:26 PM
Ok....Put on your thinking  hats.
Read these lines and see if you can guess what this item is.
The winner actually gets a dozen homeade cookies, made by me.
If you live out of town, I'll box them up nice and break free and send them to you.
If you live here , I'll bring them to you.
( Now how is that for trying to get participation..huh?)
Everybody ready?
GOOD LUCK!

Hint.....This is a very common item.  There is a whole bunch of people that have one of these.

I've been with the Mormons. I've been with the Quakers.
Quite often I'm hidden by the movers and shakers.
One time I was seen as an utter disgrace...
But now I'm accepted. I am common place.

It was in the twelve hundreds that I came to be.
Intelligent Chinese folks thought up me.
Some people bought me to indicate status,
While I could be given away...free and gratis.

I'd be willing to wager a small jar of jam...
That you can't figure out, from these lines, what I am!
Alone, I'm not mobile and yet I can slide...
Up and then down, but not side to side.

You may see me in Finland. You can see me in France.
You can see me in shirts and even in pants.
I can be fat, or I can be thin.
In a jocular vein...I can make people grin!

You may take me along if you go for a walk...
Some of my parts are petroleum stock.
I am usually placid, but I can be strange;
My color is neutral, but at times I can change.

You may see me with shorts. You may see me with talls;
Sometimes when I'm there you can't see me at all!
My size may be mini while my task may be mighty;
I can be used in, or out of a nightie!

Some people need me if climbing the stairs;
I am one, single unit and yet, I am pairs.
You've seen me with all the famous...it's true!
But you'll never see me on R2-D2!

Sometimes I'm strong and at other times weak;
It is sometimes I'm sloppy and at other times sleek.
I am unisexed neutral and yet I can be;
Male and/or female. Now don't you agree?

You may drag me along with a small piece of rope;
I've been with all the presidents and with the Pope.
I can be weighty, or I can be light;
You may don me at daybreak and doff me at night.

For an hour, or so with this rhyme you may piddle...
Can you guess what I am from the clues in this riddle?

(((More clues to follow.. but lets hear some guesses...))

Another clue comin' atcha!

I can be clean.  I can be dirty.  That is your elective.
But if I am dirty, I'm not very effective.
I can be here...I can be there
When I'm in use...I can be anywhere.
I am seen on a walk.  I am seen in a race.
And for all that I know...I've been seen out in space!

Nope...

:-X but good guess....

Have 'nuther clue: and the last one...

I can be in an airplane up there with a flyer
I'm not at low quarters, so look a bit higher.
I can be with a Human, but you don't know which end;
But you'll never see me with animals, friend!
Some people use me to appear to be smart.
I can be broken, or taken apart.

I don't really know from the clues because as soon as I start thinking about one thing - another clue points away from that.

So: I will venture two guesses

Shoes or Hat

Whoever invented cookies should have gotten one heck of a prize, too. Not to mention the person who figured out pies and cakes, and for that matter, the oven. They were culinary heros, now forgotten to time. We know who the first king of the Anglo-Saxons was. Why don't we know who baked the first cookie? I mean, cookies are certainly more important!

I KNOW THE ANSWER - LITTLE ELVES IN A HOLLOW TREE

 Then I guess it wasn't Famous Amos. I met him once, and he wasn't THAT old.

I had a friend in California that went to Cal Berkeley with the guy that founded Otis Spunkmeyers cookies. His daughter made up that name at the kitchen table one night. So i'm sure it wasn't him, either.

The cookie monster gets my vote, too. Maybe he was living in that tree with the elves, flo, and that's how it happened. And yes, cookie monster is blue. It's Kermit D. Frawg that is green.

Ut oh.

It means the picture, flo, and certainly not you. I don't know whether or not you have a program on your computer that will let you put that picture on a diet. But while you're finding out, I would certainly be giving that computer of yours lessons in being more specific in the information that it provides.

There are programs that put pictures on a diet. I do NOT know the technical name for what they do.

One of the programs I use is "Easy Share" by Kodak. I have it save a picture as "best for web" and it keeps the picture the same and shrinks the size of it at the same time. I don't know!!!  ???   ???   ???

My comptuer does the same kind of shrinking when I click on a photo or a graphic and ask the computer to send it (e-mail) to someone - my computer asks me if I want to resize the picture so that it's faster and easier to send.

I still don't know what it does, but it works.

If you resize your photos, then they'll post. I just don't know any other way to do it than those two.

Holie Buckets----y'all have eaten wayyyy too many cookies ---
It WAS NOT THE ELVES NOR ANY OF THOSE OTHER NAMES

   IT WAS MY MAMA I know, because I was there eating those wonderful cookies, right out of the oven.

  SO THERE   end of discussion    hahahahahahahahaha

How do insert a picture on a post?

Resize your picture ( I use adobe photoshop) 600x800pixals.
then save it to "my documents " or a file that you will know where to look..
then click on additional options at the bottom of your post and open up the file and find it..
click on  add..and
Bingo!
You have put a picture on that when people click on it, it will become the original size to view.
Takes up very little space on th page and works like a charm.
:)

Flo, you probably don't have any of the custom programs that will resize photos. As someone said, you usually get such a program of some kind when you buy a digital camera. If you haven't done that, you probably don't have one. Maybe you do have something that you can use, though. What operating system do you have? Windows 2000? Windows XP? Windows 98? If I knew, maybe I could help out.

On another subject entirely. We just had a real gully washer come through here. A real thunder bumper...or is that bunder thumper? Anyway, it reminded me of a little poem that my Horton grandpa used to say if it stormed.
      The lightning flashed and the thunder roared
       and the rain ran down in the ditches.
       Grandpa got scared, jumped over the fence
        And tore a hole in his britches!

I HAVE to tell this on my oldest son, Danny ( Snakehater)

When he was 5 he was in Bible School, Susan Morgan was one of the helpers at that time.

The little kids had been learning songs about baby Jesus and things like that.
One of the helpers had a new one that they taught the kids which was simple and had been "handed down".
Along with the story of how their grandpa had taught it to them when they were little.

Well, when Danny heard that... he raised his little hand all excited and told Susan and the kids that "his grandpa had taught him a song too... and could he sing it to the kids?"

Of course Susan said yes he could...

So Danny stood up and proceeded to belt out the song that my dad had indeed taught him..

Yankee Doodle went to town ...riding on a load of luuuummmber..
Turned a corner , let a fart and blew it all to thuuuunnnder!

Susan called laughing so hard she could hardly tell me.
And  suggested I have a little talk with Danny about the difference between Jesus songs and "Grandpa's songs"...

;D

If I should die before I wake,
You'll know I died of a bellyache.

sorry, frawg, I just now seen your posting about my computer.  I have windows XP, and I do have the Kodak easy-share and also photoimpression.

QUICK, FRAWG, CHECK OUT GOOD MORNING - I DONE IT
Title: Re: Riddle in Rhyme
Post by: kdfrawg on July 19, 2007, 10:01:57 AM
Although I don't have PhotoImpression, I think it will do the job. After you have opened a photo file, look through the menus for a function like "Resize" or "Image Size." It will be there somewhere. Select that option. If the sizing is not already being done in pixels, there will be a dropdown box that will let you change the way the photo is being measured to pixels.

Then change the larger of the two dimensions to about 400. The other dimension should change automatically. If it doesn't, there will be a check-box that says "Maintain Aspect Ratio" or something similar. Make sure that it is checked.

That should give you a photo small enough to add to a post. So you don't lost the original (the one that is bigger) select "Save As" from the "File" menu and save it to a name and location that you will remember. That will give you two copies of the photo: one that was too big to post but is nice and big when you look at it and one that is small enough to post so that we can look at it.

That is the general idea. If anyone here uses PhotoImpression, could you please let Flo know what the Resize command is called? And if Teresa feels that I have suggested the wrong smaller size, maybe she could let Flo know what it should be.

I sent into my Kodak easy-share, just started searching and came up with a "resizing" and followed the instructions.  (Used a pic I didn't really care about) and it worked.  You have been a great help and thank you so very much.  Never too old to learn new tricks, especially when it comes to these computers.
