I will be visiting Elk Co later this week. I plan to drive down Thursday and stay at the Silver Bell in Longton, (Judy I will try and look you up at the Cafe, how late is it open?). I want to be able to get up on Friday, look around maybe Granola, Moline, etc. I want to come to Howard and look for some graves at the cemetary and try to meet anyone from the Forum who has time for a cup of coffee or a chat. Looking through museums and places with old photographs are my favorites, so appreciate any suggestions people have. I will be heading to Wichita later in the day to attend my great nephew's wedding on Saturday. Anywone who wants to contact me privately can e-mail me at romaj1@sbcglobal.net.
Roma Jean,
The cafe closes between 2 and I think 5........maybe 4 but, will have to look that up.
IF you get Rudy's paper there is an add for the cafe (Dos Banderos) is the name of cafe.
The bar and grill next door to it is open in the evenings and does a great job. You don't have to drink and if you want a social hour here in town......that will be it, unless there is a game at school.
Ask Gwen to tell you where I live and come see me, or call and I will meet you at one place or the other.(I can even come to motel, if need be)
Gwen has my number too.
Hope to catch up with you.
Hugs and God bless,
Judy
Roma Jean, I'm glad you're going to get to go to S. E. Kansas this week. This is the week of "Neewollah" in Independence (in case you don't know, that's "Halloween" spelled backwards,) and it's a big, big celebration, with LOTS going on. We usually fly back for the week, but we have really good friends who are being married this Friday evening at the Wild Animal Park, and I do want to attend the wedding, so, had to make a choice!
I hope the weather stays nice, and that you have a great trip. Enjoy the wedding!
We're having "Santa Ana" winds today here in Southern California, and you've probably seen the wildfires in the Malibou area. Now I see the smoke over the hills from a big fire in Ramona, that's about 28 miles east of us. These fires are devastating!
Thanks for the good wishes. I grew up in Chanute, KS and always loved to march in the Neowallah parade. The pictures of the fire are just unbelievable. I can't imagine how scary it would be to have that raging towards you. Keep us posted. Have fun at your wedding.
I hope that fire is going away from you, Bonnie. 28 miles ain't nuthin' here in prairie land. I remember one that started in Oklahoma and went clear to Highway 54 east of Eureka before they could stop it. They had all available units out fighting it where they could get to it. This was between Fall River and Fredonia.
More on the fires. There are two burning in San Diego County, the one between Ramona and Julian, and one over in the Spring Valley area, east of San Diego. Both are "bad!" The winds are just so horrific, there's very little that can be done, when conditions are like this. The humidity is between 5% and 10%, as a result of the "Santa Ana's." We haven't had any rain to speak of for such a long time, everything is just "tender dry!"
Stay safe , my dear friend !!
I'm sorry that I won't be able to see you, Roma Jean, when you come, but I work at night. I hope you enjoy your visit.
Bonnie, our daughter works in Torrance and she said it looked like brown snow in the parking lot when she got to work. Another person said that the office in Irvine had soot all over the cars. I do hope you can stay safe.
I'm sitting here watching the news and am just amazed at this fire. It is certainly in my thoughts and prayers and everyone that was in the office today was thinking about it as well. I hope, Bonnie, you and yours and all concerned feel the prayers that are headed your way from all across the country. Stay safe.
Janet I'm sorry I will miss you this weekend. I know I'll be back sometime in the spring.
I'll miss you too..and I just hate that!
Kjell and I have to be in California..( 35 miles from the fires) filming for the weekend..
Hope I get to see you next time.. ( I have a hunch that you and I will share some common beliefs)
I would guess that we share a lot of common beliefs. I look forwarding to meeting you guys down the road. Please be very careful out there. We will all look forward to hearing about it when you get back.
Kjell and I have to be in California..( 35 miles from the fires) filming for the weekend..
Teresa, where is the location of your filming this week-end?
Roma Jean, what time and where will you be having coffee in Howard? Maybe first daughter and I could come visit for a bit. Poplar Pizza doesn't open until 11:00 but Toot's is open from early morning till late night.
Wilma, I'm not sure exactly what my plan is yet. Would it be possible for me to call you? My personal e-mail is romaj1@sbcglobal.net if you want to e-mail a number to me. I will have my cell phone 417-860-6752 which I believe will work down there. It seems to me that you said you lived across from the cemetary. I know I want to stop by the
cemetery and try to find my great grandparents. I'm guessing I would be working my way to Howard by mid afternoon. Anyway, sorry to be so indecisive at the moment, I would love to meet you and the elder daughter.
Roma Jean, I live across the street from the County road department on Walnut. Just look for the house with the ramp. You are welcome to just drop in if you wish. Use my facilities or whatever. I'll be home all day. I'll e-mail you the address and telephone number.
Roma Jean, gosh, am I embarrassed. :( I thought you were coming today. I have to go to Wichita tomorrow and won't be home until mid-afternoon. If there is a blue minivan in my car port, I am home. If not, I am not home. And I was going to clean house just in case.
I had a nice surprise this afternoon. Roma Jean called and said she was on the way to Howard. She came by and first daughter and I went to the cemetery with her. She found the grave she had been looking for. Then we toured Howard, pointed out the many places of interest then had an early supper at Poplar Pizza. For all you people who couldn't meet her, Roma Jean is a lovely lady. I hope she will be back soon.
I have Sprint and I lost cell signal right after I crossed the Kansas State Line from Missouri and didn't have signal again until I got almost back to Missouri.
Hope you enjoy your visit to Howard and Elk County. I hope to go back again and be able to spend a little more time. The book at the cemetery is a great help and it is a very nice cemetery.
Pat
I had a nice visit last night with Roma.
I really enjoyed meeting a new friend.
Roma, thanks for including me in your trip.........Hope the rest of
your trip goes well.
Hugs and God bless....Judy
I'm glad to hear that Roma Jean is a nice lady, Mother. I hope she thought the same about you. LOL
Of course I feel the same way. We had a wonderful visit and it was so nice to have company while I roamed around the cemetary. Usually I do all these things by myself. Jimmie was right out there walking in the wind with me. Judy and I had a great visit after I got back to Longton, it was a perfect way to cap off the evening. I slept like a baby at the Silver Bell and headed to Moline the next morning. I had lunch with Dana Brogan Denton at the Swinging Bridge Cafe. (If I lived in Elk Co I'd be eating there everyday). Also met Bumblee and I think Little Lamb. Had a visit with David Brace, picked up some copies from Connie Lloyd and then headed to Wichita. It was so great to drive through the wide open spaces of Kansas. Went through Granola, (the museum was closed), Burden, Udahl, etc. Had dinner with Bev Leffingwell and her son and then on to my stepsisters. Wow, what a day, we all went to bed at 2:00 am. Time to begin getting ready for the wedding this afternoon. Talk to you soon.
What a wonderful trip. The wedding yesterday was beautiful, it was at the Scottish Rite Temple in Wichita. Before I left today, I had a great visit with Ole Granny. I grabbed a quick cheeseburger at Toots and got home about 8:30 tonight. This was the kind of trip that I had wanted to make to Kansas for a long time. My thanks to all of you that took the time to visit and make this a really warm, homey trip. I plan to be making a lot of these trips through Elk County.
It's good to see that you are home safely. If there is anything you need here in Elk County, let me know. I will try to take care of it for you. Hope to see you again the next time.
Hi, Glad your trip was enjoyable. Wish I could have eaten at Toot's with you. Sounds yummy! I made it to my grandson's 2nd birthday party with time to spare. He enjoyed his day too. Please let me know when you are back in the area. It was a great visit and enjoyed meeting you. Ole Granny
Thanks everyone! Holiday plans are pending. I'll keep you posted.
