1. Who is or was "The Whistler" whom I recall hearing about.
2. Someone comes through Howard sounding a locomotive diesel horn on his or her car or truck. Apparently sounded on K-99, it is heard in the entire town. The first time I heard it was at my parent's house on Perry and I immediately ran down to the elevator thinking the Howard Branch had reopened. I don't think I have heard it lately.
It was Ted Winn. And if my memory serves me correctly, it was his way of saying "hello" to his son and daughter, as he went down the highway.
If this is not correct --- anyone that knows differently, feel free to correct me
Nope. It is not Ted Winn. It is Harlan from Fredonia who is married to Brad and Mavis Helms daughter, Jaylene. Right now I can't remember Harlan's last name. He drives a cattle truck and when he got that horn, Jaylene was working at Toot's. He would honk at her. Now, he honks whenever he goes through.
I should say, at least I don't think Ted has one. I eat breakfast with Ted almost every morning, so I'll ask him and if he does have one, I'll let you know.
Harlan Chaplin. Jaylene works at the bank in Fredonia with Marty.
Who was the whistler?
I have heard a number of people refer to him.
Well, I'll be darned ---wrong again wwwwaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa sniff sniff - >:( >:( >:( >:(
I really an truly thought it was Ted....do I owe him an apology ??? If so -- Ta Ta will you deliver for me?
XXXXOOOO to U from me
My sister and I were visiting in Howard one weekend and heard that whistle and both looked at each other with the same thought at the same moment--"Didn't they take the train tracks out of this area?" Then we started laughing so hard and realized that the sound must have come from some "local character", although it gave us a thought for a bit that we were both losing our minds.
I couldn't believe that would be my quiet and unassuming, innocent nephew that would make any extra noise.
No, Frank. It wasn't your nephew. It was this Harlan Chaplin.
Let me tell you about Ted Winn. He is usually in Toot's by the time I get there. Ted is so funny to just sit and talk with him and this young man will give you the shirt off his back if he thought you needed it. Even if you didn't need it, all you had to do was ask him, "Ted, I need your shirt." No questions. He would just take it off and give it to you. Jim and I just lov ehim.
Tell him hello for me.
Frank
The whistler is a different person from the one having the diesel horn.
My understanding is he walked through town after dark continuously whistling.
I do not know who that would be. Does anyone know?
Do you expect me to open my big mouth and insert my foot AGAIN? un huh --- nope, not me --- been there done that --- need to - for once - keep my big mouth shut !!
Dang -- I hate being wrong - should be used to it by now, but hard to get used to.
Yeah I do know who the "whistler" was.
Help me out TaTa...
my memory is about gone..
He lived south across the street from Cory Montgomery... and the old house, now empty, sets next to Marty and Joanna.
Dang.. what WAS his name.. I can see him ..but I can't think of his name..
Kinda walked with a small limp.. was on disability.. drove me crazy when he came into the store.. kinda off the wall guy..
dang it! ahhhmmmm..
Bob... Bob ahhhh Bob something.. I think.
Great! that will drive me crazy until I think of it!

You aren't the only one who thought it was Ted Winn---Since I moved here I have been told by 3 different people that it was him ;D
Oh smile smile -- is there a SLIGHT chance that I could have been correct ---Oh my heart is beating so fast -
It really doesn't matter who is was or is -- it is a great way to give your loved ones a "neat Hello" !!
Teresa, I can also see the Bob that you are referring to -- he had brothers here also~~maybe later it will dawn on some one. Probably not me though.
Tim thinks his name was Bob Hinkle.
YEAAAAAA FOR TIM
That is exactly who it was. Thanks Marcia --- now I can get on to "trying" to remember other things lol
Yep.. that is who it was.... :)
whew.. thanks.. I woke up this morning trying to remember and meant to ask Mark, but forgot.. ???
Forget..forgot.. I think that is my middle name anymore.. :-\
Teresa, does the name Hinkle sound like it? AND I heard that "train whistle" as I was leaving for church this last sunday morning. Sorry, Ted, cause I just figured it was you. It did sound like it was coming from the highway, tho.
Bob passed away years ago, in fact all of the Hinkle boys and Girls passed away but charles who was in my class and is a good friend. I can see Robert whistling like that. They were related to the Jay family.
Frank
Yes. That would be Bob Hinkle. Bob died in that house and had been there at least one day before someone checked on him. Poor guy. I played Taps at his funeral. He was buried at Mt. Zion Cemetery which used to be known as the North Pole Cemetery. It was cold.
Now, I have to retract about the train whistle. I talked with Ted Winn this morning and he does have a horn that sounds like a train whislte. He said he doesn't honk his as often as Harlan Chaplin does and Harlan's has his pointed towards the ground which makes it louder. Ted's points to the front of the truck. Anyway, Ted said that he got his before Harlan did, so I guess it is a toss up whose train horn you are hearing.
By the way Frank, I told Ted hello for you, but I told Bob, your brother, that you didn't have anything to say to him. ha ha
Janet did you go to school in Severy with Ronald Sexton's kids?
