Marcia,
Enjoy these old articles. Who would ever have thought Ringling Brothers would have visited.
There's a big old building in Sargent, Nebraska, which is a very small place. There is a little diner in a tiny building tacked onto the front. The name escapes me now, but it was big and fancy. If you've been there a lot and made nice to the owner, she would take you back into the big building, which still had all the posters from when all of the best big bands and musical acts came to Sargent on the 20s, 30s, and 40s. I missed the good parts by quite a number of years, but it was interesting nonetheless to know that the dusty old chair you were sitting on in that dark old place could have been occupied by Stan Kenton or his ilk.
This is a Ringling Bros. Poster from 1899. This very well could have been the show that came to Elk County.
Marcia, I loved the comment about the "high salaried specialists.'' Kevin, that's a great poster. Where in the world do you find all that neat stuff?
I Googled "Ringling Brothers 1899" and that poster came up as for sale. I was looking for the list of towns that Ringling had on their schedule for 1899 to see how far the circus travelled between shows back then, but Ringling's Online records only go back to 1919, and Barnum and Bailey's were in England that season. I'd love to find a journal entry from someone who went to the circus and get their impression, I bet it was a huge event.

That is all fascinating stuff.
If my memory is holding out [some days I am not sure! The director of the Ringling Brothers Band had a sister that lived in HOWARD.
