Good answer, flo.

Mother, I just think you have to add fresh water everyday.

I have seen something advertised that will do the job without harming the birds.  What is it?

I just don't know.  I'll google it and see what I can find out.

Wilma go to Bird Bath and Beyond website and they have some items  listed that might be what you want. One thing I do is clean ours every so often with clorox and then refill it. It keeps the algae and critters out.

Here's a link to something about birdbaths.

What's wrong with wiggling in a bird bath?

Nothing, but I don't think mine is big enough for you.

From the point of view of a frawg bird baths are just real nifty except that they are so far off the ground. I get a crick in my neck just looking up at the bottom of them.

maybe frawg has a small hole under the birdbath that he hides in...and waits for the little birds to drop a wiggle thing for him to eat.   :P

Wilma, you may already have your wiggler question answered, but if not, I think you may be thinking of the mosquito control rings that have Bt Israelenis in them. You may have seen them in Gardener's Supply. 1 ring treats 100 feet of water for 30 days. They are 6 for 12.95. Safe around birds.

Wow, I have something in common with Bt Israelenis! I'm safe around birds, too. Well, at least until the birds get bigger. I'm not safe at all around hawks, for example. And eagles? Well, I don't stand a chance around eagles!

Oh, sorry, I digress.

;D

Diane is that 100 feet of water or 100 gallons of water for 30 days?

Hey, Frawg, I have one birdbath on a pedestal and several large clay flowerpot saucers sunk in the ground for our "Lower Creatures." You would feel right at home.l

DLD, I think that's 100 surface ft., not gallons. They are used for ponds too. I'll check when I get a minute.

LOL! "Lower creature," huh? I'm going to get an inferiority complex. I guess I'm just going to have to get a ladder...

Maybe I will plant a climbing bush at the base of mine.  "Climbing" as in Frawgie climbing it.

Ok, I'm back. Yes, each ring controls 100 square feet of surface area, doesn't matter how deep, since they float on top. The little rings are 2 and 3/4 inches in diameter and about 3/4 inch thick.

Why, Wilma, that would be very nice of you! I was thinking about that ladder, and then I thought, "Where the heck is a frawg going to keep a ladder?" I wonder if they make lily pad garages?

But, these rings would not be used in a small bird bath.  Just in large puddles of water.

I think that what Mother is trying to control are the mosquito larvas that occur when water just sits.

One thing you could do, Mother, is to buy a thing to put on your birdbath that would keep moving the water, a fountain like thing.  That link I put on there talked about a water wiggler.

The rings are advertised for birdbaths and ponds. I don't think "overkill" is a problem and I have broken them into pieces with success. Moving water does work very well.

So, you think that if a person got one, they could break it into little pieces and put a piece at a time in the birdbath?

I've cut them into 8 pieces, and haven't had any problems. Smaller than that and they get a little crumbly and I don't want the birds to try to eat it. It shouldn't hurt them but why risk it. I haven't used them for a couple of years since we've been home more. They have good customer service people who should be able to answer any questions

Kermit, it looks like everyone must have gone to lunch, we seem to be the only one's posting here.

Maybe it's time to go finish my painting. I'm painting some shelving for my master bedroom closet. I've already took a break and oiled all the hinges on my doors and locks, in the house, watered my acre of land, done laundry, dishes and cleaned out 1/4 of my bonus room above the garage.  Temp. is about 105 today with about 32% humitiy.  And I still need to cut all the boards and hang brackets for the shelving to go on,  pull all of my dead plants up that died from the heat, before it gets much hotter today.  I may be ready for my nap sooner then I thank.

So keep everyone laughling with your posts, your so good at that. ;D
