Title: Brick From the Old Howard High School
Post by: genealogynut on April 14, 2007, 04:09:33 PM
This is being posted on behalf of JoAnne "Jody."  Thank you Jody, for your contributions to the forum.  :)

"Jody" tells me that when the old Howard High was torn down, she managed to obtain some of the bricks from the building.  She had someone paint a sketch of the old Howard High building that so many of us remember from the days of our youth, on one of the bricks. (click on picture below)  And with that, she had the year of her graduation put on also.   I think that is so-o-o-o  c-o-o-ol  8) 8).

Now, that is cool.  That is the same building that I attended.  However; the North Elk High School class of 1972 had the graduation in the Severy Gym as that was the only place big enough for all of us.  ha

That is really a cool idea.  Something to think about if I ever find a Moline brick.  Of course, I will have to find a picture of the brick works, too.  Might never happen.

Does anyone know what year the old Howard High School was torn down, and when the new one was built?

I'm pretty sure the new high school was built in 78 or 79. Our class was the first Sr. class in the new building. Class of 1980.

Voting bonds for the new junior/senior high school building took place at an election held on Sept. 1, 1976.  The bonds carried, and the site subsequently chosen was just south of the city of Howard on the west side of KS 99 Hwy.  Construction soon began on the new structure, estimated to cost $1,900,000.00, though the actual cost exceeded two million dollars.  In the fall of 1978, the new building began housing the 7th through 12th grade students from Howard, Severy and Moline.

the reason for haviing the high school painted on rhe brick was I could just see myself dragging out a brick out of my hall closet in 20 years or so and saying "what in the world is this brick doing here!?"  Do you have that trouble, too?
