R. H. Nichols, a lawyer and mentioned as one of the Upola Town Company stockholders, was one of three men who illegally organized Howard County back in 1870. He was a stockholder in the Elk Falls Town Company and moved to Howard City when Elk County came along as a result of the county division act.
