Title: Jno??? Anybody?
Post by: LisaT on February 06, 2007, 02:05:38 PM
There was a Jno McClintock and Jno Brazil.
Anybody have a clue on how to pronounce that?
Or is it short for something?

I believe Jno. is supposed to be the abbreviation for John.  Why?  i do not know, but one would think that no longer than what the name of John is, they would just go ahead a spell it out.  I am thinking that was what I was told when I was just a kid.  Just like the abbreviation for George is Geo.  And for William, the abbrev. is Wm.

Isn't Jno the abreviation for Junior?  Don't know why I think that.  Have you ever seen it on a Census record?

The Elk County Herald used JNO. A. Thompson when talking about John A. Thompson who was somehow related to Tom E. Thompson.
