Title: County Seats
Post by: W. Gray on October 19, 2015, 09:27:30 AM
Historical Nougat:

Kansas has had many county seat wars.

Here is a list of the counties in southeast Kansas and the number of county seats each has had:

Allen, 3
Bourbon, 3
Butler, 2
Chautauqua, 1
Cherokee, 3
Cowley, 1
Crawford, 1
Elk, 1
Greenwood, 3
Labette, 1
Montgomery, 3
Neosho, 5
Wilson, 6
Woodson, 4

Anyone willing to provide a guess as to which county in Kansas has had the most county seats? How many county seats did it have?

Garfield? Four?

Wilson, in the southeast Kansas county list had six and Neosho had five, so four could not be the record.

It seems to me Garfield had three county seats. Garfield was the unlucky 106th Kansas county that was discovered not having the necessary 432 square miles for a Kansas county and was disorganized by the legislature and added to Finney County.

Finney County has only had one county seat.

The answer is Linn County on the eastern edge of the state. Linn County has had eight county seats:

1. Paris
2. Mound City
3. Linnville
4. Mound City
5. LaCygne
6. Farmers City
7. Pleasanton
8. Mound City
