Title: Mother's Best Cookies
Post by: genealogynut on January 22, 2007, 02:44:52 PM
Note:  This recipe (I am guessing) is probably 100+ years old, as it came from my one of my grandmothers, and I do not know where she obtained it. But I do know she was married approx. 1900.   Don & I think it makes a great cookie.

Preheat oven to 375 degrees.

1 cup shortening
1 cup sugar
1 tsp. salt
2 1/2 cups flour
1/2 tsp. baking soda
1 1/2 tsp. vanilla or flavoring
1 unbeaten egg
1/2 cup milk
walnut halves

Cream shortening, sugar, and vanilla, then add flour, soda, salt, egg, and milk.  Stir until well blended.  Place spoonfuls of cooky dough on ungreased cookie sheet. Placed walnut half in center of each cookie.  Bake abt. 10-15 minutes, depending on size of cookie.

100% guaranteed to add inches to your waistline!!!!

This isn't in the recipe, but what I like to do, is sprinkle the cookies with sugar right after I take them out of the oven. Um-m-m, (smacking my lips).
