Vallandigham also understood that the Republican Party was using the war as an excuse to ram through Congress the old Hamiltonian mercantilist system of massive economic interventionism and corporate welfare. No more state lines, no more state governments, but a consolidated monarchy or vast centralized military despotism." In today's language all of this would be called "national greatness conservatism."
