Yes, Lisa, the kids go trick or treating.  Leave your porch light on if you want them to stop.  Most of them will be uptown at the weiner roast for awhile, but then, they go looking for some more treats.

Wife had mentioned yesterday about decorating for Halloween.  When I came home with GD#1 from school, we got all the stuff out and decorated.  We usually don't know much evidenced by the fact that a lot of our decorations still had price tags on them!  We can't even remember buying them!  Oh well, they are up and we are done.  We usually get between 50 and 70 kids every year.  I will go to the store next week and stock up on the candy.  I buy two kinds that I can't or don't eat and one bag of Snickers or Reeses which I save for the last in case I run out of the others.  Then what's left is mine, all mine. ;D

I love Halloween. When I was sheriff, I would open the two doors and just wait for the little spooks to come by. Jim and I usually get about 30. I plan on driving back from Independence just for that night.

I bought my candy today and will do my porch decorations tomorrow. One ghost wind sock and bats hanging all around the edge of the porch with a big ol' rat by the front door. I have an medical study human heart that will sit as if the rat is nibbling on it.  Behind that will be a little ice chest marked "human organ for transplant." Up on the house wall under the porch will be a big spider web with one of Jane's big old spiders in it.

It ain't Howard, oldfart, it's Covina, CA. population, 40,000+, one of 88 cities in Los Angeles County, on a street that is in a tract with one way and out, and approximately 134 homes in the tract.  That said............I have lived here 36 years........I have seen families come and go and my granddaughters are here a lot during the week so I know about how many kids live in the neighborhood.  Certainly not 50-70. Many of the homes are owned by older folks, like me. What happens is that parents load the kids in the car and drive to all different neighborhoods to trick-or-treat.  Is that fair?  What's the difference as long as the kids get to go trick-or-treating.  I've had mothers with 2 week old babies come to the door.  Now, you know that baby ain't going to eat the candy!  I've had high school girls come to the door that could be arrested for indecent exposure with some of the costumes they wear.  For a few years, there was a quartet of high school kids, two girls and two guys coming to the door.  One of the boys played a guitar and the four of them sang a song they made up about going out and getting some Halloween candy which they did very well and earned them extra pieces of candy from me.  I've had young men and women coming to the door, maybe in their 20's, no costume, no nothing, just going around and getting free candy.  One time I told one of them, no costume, no candy.  He gave me a dirty look and walked off.  Then I had to watch the cars in the driveway for a while to make sure they didn't get vandalized.  Many years ago, when my kids were small, my neighbor and I would walk the kids around the neighborhood.  At some of the houses, he and I would get our own treat.......a bottle of beer or a glass of wine!  Life was good then.  But kids grow up and one Halloween, he and I thought we might go out and see if we could get our "treats."  Idea was quashed by our respective spouses.  Then he moved.  Anyway, I love Halloween with all the imaginative costumes and giving out the candy.  I set up a TV tray by the front door with a big bowl of candy on it and I sit where I can see the kids coming up the driveway and watch TV at the same time.

We lived in the country for many years, so when we moved into town we got to do the handing out candy thing again. It is so much fun! We usually have scary movies and popcorn for us later in the evening. Sometimes Kyle invites some friends over.

Popcorn balls at my house in Piedmont.  They don't have to change masks at my place or even wear a costume for that matter.  I just love it that they want to come get a popcorn ball.  After all those that are 30 and older just don't want to costume up for Halloween. lol

I re-watched the silent classic Nosferatu the other night. I forgot just how creepy that movie can be! Especially when the lights are off and everyone else is in bed!

In 30 years...I've only missed one Halloween that I didn't decorate.. I hate to say it, but this will be the 2nd.  :'(  ( and I had some new stuff planned out but will have to use it next yer I guess)
I just got home from a 5 day day trip and unpacked..and have to repack to leave again tomorrow to shoot in California in a Jersey Lilly shoot for a week. Just get back from that and will be gone for 2 more days.. then home for a few ..and gone again for 2 more. There isn't any extra time what with all my other stuff that needs done.
I'm sad... but sometimes other things take priority.  :-\

Adults dress up in their costumes (well, some of them do), and then go home to host trick or treaters. We turn our porch light on when we get home, so kids know to come.

My understanding is that it is free to everyone.  And the Julie and helpers that are doing this is our own pharmacist/grocer and her husband, Patrick, and their employees at Family Market and Batson's.  Just another reason that this town should be grateful for Julie and Patrick Perkins.

Halloween is getting easier here.  The older kids are putting in their orders for how many popcorn balls they will be by to get.  Makes me feel good that when they think they are to old to go trick or treating, they still come for a popcorn ball.  I take that a real compliment. :)

Not sure whose brilliant idea it was for Longton to have their Halloween last night when the surrounding towns will have theirs on Monday night, but I sure seen a whole bunch of them little linoleum lizards show up that we have never seen before. We live on a street that "usually" does not have alot of kids. Maybe 25-30 of the cute little cookie crumblers. The wife made 40 little bags of treats and not long after the sun set they were all gone. In the cupboard we had a box of 45 cheese crackers from Sam's, plus a bunch of Snickers and Almond Joys I had rat holed. When I turned the lights out to stop the madness we had three packs crackers left and not enough candy bars to satisfy my sweet tooth for one day. Now I aint complaining but just giving the area towns notice that Longton city has rented two semi truck cattle haulers to take OUR local bugger pickers to YOUR town on Monday night------------sooooo, get them candy bowls stocked up people !!! ;D

We had so much fun tonight! The hot dogs were DELICIOUS! Thank you folks from the Family Market! We got to see a lot of cute little kids running around in their costumes. This one older boy had on a black t-shirt that said, "Low budget Ninja costume" on it! How funny! We got home around 7PM to hand out candy, and ran out at about 7:50. What a great turn out! I hope all the kids had a good time, and not too many ended up with belly aches...... :)

Well, it is almost 9 PM Pacific time and I think we are about done.  OOOPS!  two more......Anyway, many things influenced the night.  First of all, it is a school night so the little ones have to be home early.  We seem to get a lot more teenagers this year.  And the rule of the house is..........no costume, no candy.  Didn't have that problem this year. And, secondly, many churches and other organizations are having a Halloween party spectacular and it is easier for parents to just take them there and not have to walk around so much.  My own granddaughters did just that, going to a church in their neighborhood where there was a big party going on.  As I had mentioned, we average 60 to 80 kids a year and we managed to give out candy to 64 of them this year.  Different this year was three teenagers all in nice costumes with one bag.  One bag.  Did they not want to carry a bag each?  Then the thought occurred to me.............I had read that some teens were going to be going around gathering candy for kids who were not able to go trick-or-treating.  So maybe that was them.  I made a crack about dividing the candy evenly and all I got was a smile from the girl.  The oldest was a woman probably in her early thirties accompanying a group of girls.  She was wearing a Victorian Queen costume complete with a royal robe and a crown.  The youngest was in his dad's arms and probably had no idea what the heck they were doing.  The best of the night was our 12-year-old friend and neighbor who was dressed as Count Dracula, complete with tux and red vest, fangs and hair combed just right.  This is a kid that is so polite it makes you nauseated.  He is just too cool.  You know the type............yes Ma'am, yes Sir, Thank you, please.........usually all in the same sentence!

Anywho, it was a nice evening and I enjoyed it very much just like I do every year.

We had kids riding on flatbed trailers with hay bales for seats trick or treating! They had adults watching them and were very polite. I think there were 3 different trailers. What a cool idea! A hay rack ride and trick or treating rolled into one!

Post by: Wilma on November 01, 2011, 09:20:49 AM
It was a perfect evening for trick or treating.  All my treatees were accompanied by adults who stayed in the background.  I especially liked the trailer that was pulled by a 4-wheeler.  As I watched the goblins loading back up, I noticed that the driver was watching very closely to see that the last one was on board before he started up.  It struck me that this might be the safest way.  The driver could hear and see what was going on with the children.

For the most part, the children would take only one treat.  I had Tootsie Roll treats and in the past the lollipops had been a problem mixed in with the rest of the candy.  So this year I stuck them, stick down, around the top of the bowl.  They went fast.  I thought I might have to put a few back because I have a great grandson that likes them and know where I keep them.

It was perfect weather. Cool, with clouds scudding across the moon sliver.
We had @26 or so, all good kids with great costumes. The little ones had an adult in tow who waited at the foot of the driveway.  The three groups of older ones didn't The one older boy had a really ugly clown mask and I said....EEEK! Killer Clowns from Outer Space! He stopped and looked at me and yelled.."You Got It ,You Got It!" and was very pleased with himself. Really funny. As always the Halloween pencils were as popular as the candy.
