Me? I was in Brussel, Belgium with a french contingent. The frogs played his music around the clock when we heard the news.
We didn't get much sleep that night. The next day was all about Elvis.
We had just moved into our new house. A neighbor from where we used to live was an ardent Elvis fan, had all his records, traveled to Vegas to see the concerts, etc. I heard the news and called her on the phone to let her know. She answered and all I heard was sobbing and crying and moaning on the other end. Later, she said she considered suicide as she wanted to be with the King. She and her family moved to Tennessee not long after that. I haven't heard from her since, but I bet she makes weekly visits to Graceland.

Considering the time frame I was probably either under the influence of John Barley-corn or fishing------ and quite possible I was fishing but getting "self medicated " at the same time. :angel:
Had a friend at the time that was a trash-man in Bartlesville. With-in days of Elvis dying there was a stack of Elvis albums on top of someone's trash. Some had never been opened. It was like the fan was so PO'ed that Elvis died they wanted to get rid of all their memories of him

I was at a drafting table at my buddy Clark"s graphics company in Wichita. I was laid off from Boring Aircraft at the time. We had a secretary (graduated in "60 I believe) who I thought we were going have to haul to E.R. Sent her home for the day. I was o.k. though, I was listening to the White Album!!
Looks like most people on this forum haven't heard of Elvis. Lets see now... could it be they were too young to know where they were and still sucking on momma's booby.... or too old and forgot where they were because of a loss of brain function that occurs from time to time.... or they didn't like his music and really didn't care where they were? Hmmmmm....?
I was in grade school and I never really like ole Elvis. I think it was the grease in his hair. ;D
Come on Warph-miester, some of us may be further into the Moody Blues era. Elvis was great , but with all the stuff they were spewing about him when he died, it just ruined his image at the time. From everything I saw of him, he was a good soul, God rest. :'(

At my high school job in the Gun Shop, by myself listening to the radio. I remember it vividly. The only other "where were you when" date I can remember is 9\11 Twin towers. I was getting ready to go to a job interview, had a lot on my mind. No one mentioned the event in the interview. After we concluded the interview we all burst out yakking about the elephant in the room. I remember other events vividly just not where I was at the time.

Oh is today dead elvis day? I don't remember where i was. wasn't into his stuff. My thing was iron maiden and acid rockers.
I remember when Elvis died, but even more vividly I remember the first anniversary of his death. We were going through Memphis and the National Guard was just pulling out from duty, filling in from a long police strike. The city was full, and I mean full of tourists all trying to mark the first anniversary. All we wanted to do was to get out of Memphis and head south, not easy considering the main interstate was closed for construction and the detour was poorly marked. But we made it down into peaceful Mississippi and thankfully out of that chaotic mess. Whew!!! 8) 8)
Jefe de las Vacas and Steve, I am a Moody Blues Fan and and Iron Maiden fan. Just our era. I also, have a vivid memory of Rosie Grier jumping on Bobbie Kennedy's assailant when I was a very young kid.Just don't know where I was.

OH yeah I remember the first moon landing. I was in Prairrie Village, Ks little brother was asleep on the floor, a thumb in his mouth, little American flag sticking up. My dad took a picture and the tv screen was a perfectly framed shot.

Great story, Six... I found out what you mean by congestion in Memphis the hard way. I was there with my family on the 10th anniversaryof his death. Man, what a mess! Never go on his birthday or the date he died.

That was back in 1968 when Rosie jumped on Sirha Sirhan for shooting Bobby kennedy.... you were probably sitting at Peets slurping down a great cup of Major Dickason's Blend Coffee... their most famous blend. Combines the best coffees from the world's premier coffee-growing regions. Very full-bodied, complex, rich, and smooth.

Still in Kansas not allowed to drink coffee. Except for the occassional cookie dipped in Dad's coffee. Long befor I moved to California.

I can recall in high school that all the girls just swooned over Elvis Presley beginning sometime around 1956, or so. A good many of the boys, including myself, hated his singing with a passion. Many times I would just shut his music off the car radio and not listen. Never bought a record, either.
However, I was in Las Vegas in 1965 and was persuaded to go see his show at one of the local casino hotels. Although I was reluctant to go, a couple songs through his show I was thinking that damn, this guy is good. I became a fan.
The fanatic Elvis followers in the first couple rows "impressed" me for some time after I came back to Missouri. One of them threw her panties on stage at Elvis and he caught them. He then used them to wipe the sweat off his face. Of course, the audience howled. I was convinced this was a spur of the moment action by this young lady.
However, I went to see him again in Wichita a few years later and also watched a tape of him performing in Hawaii. The same thing happened on those shows. A young lady would throw her panties on stage, he would catch them, and use them to wipe his face. Each time the action seemed to take place at the same time and under the same circumstances in the show, so I am assuming this was a standard plant at each of his shows.

Man, you're just a pup..... think of all the crazy Shenanigans you missed in the sixties in CA. ....like the hippie revolution. How the hippies stood for peace, free love, and nonmaterialism... casual sex, acid rock, free booze, dress like a pig, hair down to your ass, the San Francisco Sound... miles davis, the "monk," dizzy gillespie, brubeck, etc.... Allen Ginsberg on his soap-box spouting about the moral decay of his generation. Ah those were the days.... wish I could have seen it.

First of all those days did last until I arrived on the scene. Second of all one of the main reasons I come to the forum is so I can be called a pup. :laugh:

while i may have been into acid rock i was and am still into blues. Robert Johnson, bbking, cab calloway, Ella (boy can that woman sing!)

I wish I could tell you where I was when Elvis, but I can't. I remember it very well. I bawled and bawled. I was about 19 or 20 years old. I loved Elvis. Still love Elvis. Not fanatic about him, though.
Jim and I have a great-nephew who has Down's Syndrome and he LOVES Elvis. Absolutely just Loves him. That makes being an Elvis fan enjoyable for me because of Caleb.
