Hate to say it... but I'm afraid it already isn't "America" anymore...been like that a while now. There is no "privacy" anymore. Does anyone know if our area has these smart meters? I'm going to find out..
If this is about "Smart Meters" put in by your local utillity to monitor gas\electric. I have one word for you "run" don't let them in they are inaccurate. Just google PGE and Smart Meter to see how they work in Northern California.
David
WOW, if that is true, then I will say no. I purposely leave lights on at 3 am, and cook at 2 pm.
By my electric bill...I am solid in where I am at, but not my habits....I change my habits (oxymoron) for a reason.
you see...
I am ready.
Quotehow they work in Northern California.
I am not in California anymore....
People try to take advantage of us, because they think we are 'slow' and flat-headed!
Never trust things that are effecient without first checking yourself!
off to bed with the lights on!

Thanks for that post Teresa. When I was living up by Seattle they had started pushing the smart meters. They told us they would help the power company save us money by allowing them to control our power consumption during high power usage.
They would be able to turn off things like hot water heaters etc.
I opted out because I didn't think they need remote control of my life and if they wanted me to shut something down they could call me on the phone.
This is far more critical then they were telling people.
Thanks again.
Here is my town, our old four dial electric meter has been changed out to the newer numerical meter for those meter readers who didn't finish grade school. Handy for me too, cuz I always got confused about reading the dials backwards, and I did finish school.
A few years ago, SoCal Edison wanted to attach a box on my central A/C so that in peak times when there was a big demand on power they could shut the unit off for a period of no more than 30 minutes............by satellite............with a computer.
Now, having had recent problems with the unit, I had to have the motor replaced and all was well until one of the blades on the fan broke, prompting another call to the repairman. He replaced the blade assembly and everything was good until he tried to start the unit. It wouldn't go. He and I were both scratching our heads. It was in the late afternoon and not hot weather. He finally disconnected the Edison box and we were good. Motor running, fans turning, cool air in the house and a happy wife. Can't get much better than that.
At this point, the box is still disconnected and I am pretty sure Edison is not aware of that. At least, until they show up at my front door saying there is a problem with the box. Who's to say that they didn't remember to turn it back on after turning off one time? Can the satellite tell if the box is disconnected? Who knows...........I guess I will wait and see. Til then, I am basking in cool air.

Not yet. They are trying it out in lawrence right now as a beta site
Didn't the USA Patriot act open that door too? >:( Passive interception?
what your not being told is this. The electric company built and developed a communications system that is delivered through the electric lines. They piggyback the signals on the ac signals. Thats how those digital meters work, they can read your meter from the main office if it is enabled. ITs been that way for years. BUT more recently the administration has called for smart appliances. They are appliances like your fridge and water tank, ect that communicate back to the main office. Now what your not being told is that manufacturers see this as a gold mine. One of the big ideas is to put rfid readers in the refrigerators. Those rfid readers can read all your groceries in the room. :) Tally up what you got and send it off to whoever pays for the info. So what happens is all these retailers can target you with ads based on your groceries you bought. OH and in case you don't know, most groceries now have rfid on them. You just can't see them.
But that kind of info also leaves a big open door for the Government! IF they know how much food you have, then they can come seize it if they determine you have more than 30 day supply. There are laws in some places that prohibit the storage of food you know. They call it hoarding and they will come take it from you and possibly jail you for it. GOtta love the liberals for that one!
Another little dirty secret is that cable tv set-top boxes hve cams in them that can be controlled from the headend of the cable or satellite company. Nice isn't it! combine that with your refrigerator, they can tell what you eat when you watch a movie.
Uh, my grocer told me the information comes from what is put into the register when you swipe and check out. That's how it can print coupons and all for things I do like or might like. Sure wouldn't work for someone's front yard veggie stand.
Don't believe anything about my refrigerator being bugged, Sorry, don't believe it. As far as keeping tabs on how much food I have at home...nope, since I freeze and can my own stuff, can't be. Also LDS.... Mormons wouldn't tolerate it. They are meant to have 3 months to a year's stored food, water and whatever is needed to sustain life.
Where in this country is it illegal to store food? Please enlighten me on how that works. I'm a natural skeptic when I hear that kind of thing. It would be all over the newspapers. The tabloids would love it."They" gonna take it from food banks and church pantries too? Sorry, no sale on that idea. Why would the Gov't want my food?

We are all so arrogant to believe we are free and then we are to intellegent to believe we are ignorantly trained to believe we can trust our governments.
Steve, you never said declared wartime. When the enemy ships come up the Delaware and their planes fly overhead dropping bombs, I'll worry about it then. I grew up with "duck and cover," bomb shelters, Joe Mc Carthy and all the rest. Yawn.... I'm old and jaded now, let the next generation handle it. It's an awfully big stretch to go from collecting weapons after a tornado, which I personally disapproved of, and taking everyone's stored food away. Not only all that the dept of Ag i the event of a disease outbreak, will go and erradicate the entire farm where that disease breaks out as well as a 5 mile radius of the outbreak. So if you have a neighbor whos cow was found with anthrax, and you have a 10000 cow operation within 5 miles your operation will be eradicated as well. Called scorched earth concept.

Now that's what I'm talking about over at
http://www.cascity.com/howard/forum/index.php?topic=11780.new;topicseen#new
In this presentation the lollipops are dollars from our tax dollars.
What I'm talking about are our tax dollars giving lollipops in the form of summer day camp, etc.
This for the kids and that for the kids. The kids are being used as a tool or they could even be considered as
a weapon to shut people up. Simply say, "What you don't like doing for children. Another lollipop coming your way at the Longton Free Fair a water slipper slide. But how much are they going to charge the children to use it after our tax dollars paid for it's rental?
But anyhow,Then the perpetrators get imbeded and you lose all control to them. This type of organization is spreading rapidly across Kansas and the US.
Do we need organizations running our School Boards, our Police Departments, our Sheriff Departments, our City Councils, our County Government? All while keeping their membership secret? It's not all volunteers/followers running amoke doing what ever they want, is that what you think? Not a one of those people on the committies is going to drive to Wichita to pick up or return that water slipper slide, no oh no they can't do that. So one of our forum dissenters has volunteered to do it for them, for the kids. I am not at liberty to disclose who that dissenter is at this time. But I will give him an atta boy.
No one cares if the organization does for the kids but when they infiltrate the government or use their positions and/or organization to influence government and do it in secret through volunteers/ followers something is terribly wrong. It's time for the general public to wake up.
This ALERT is an excellent post, thank you for posting it.
This is one of the NUMBER ONE REASONS why i refuse to take a grant or a government loan to grow my business! I got chewed out a year or two ago cause i said i wouldn't take a grant that was shown to me by someone because of the strings attached!
Time to wake up people! NOTHING IN THIS WORLD IS FREE! and if you try and get something for nothing, it most likely will cost you everything that is dear to you!
Now that is so sad.You think everything and everybody has some other intent? An ulterior motive? Why, oh why, do you assume that? I just spent the entire morning taking day camp kids through the firehouse and teaching them fire safety.
I charged nothing ,was paid nothing and sent the kids home with free Aetna fire hats, pencils, sticker badges and fire safety oriented activity books. They got to try on bunker gear and air masks, drag a hose around, sit in the driver's seat of an engine and sit in tiller seat of the new ladder truck. What was the benefit to me, pray tell? How were those kids "used?" It cost them nothing to come see me. What Lollipops? No free lunch? Please explain? No tax dollars came to me. Now I'm sad and depressed. :P :'(

Why? Just look at whats happening in the world. This government is stealing our country piece by piece. Selling it tothe highest bidder.
I don't see why you can't see whats happening. Hell there was a video posted about agenda 21. It spells it out quite plainly. Years ago, clinton sold off our heritage to the world. he declared our national parks and symbols as world property. Piece by piece the dems have dismantled this great republic. The republicans haven't done as much cause they are not taken over completely by progressive/communist types yet. IF that does happen then we are totally and absolutely screwed.
I'm sorry but your having fun with the kids is one of those lollipops that ross keeps talking about. Its a feel good moment that trys to say all is well and distract us from what is really happening.
Not against lollypop moments but i also do not let it distract me from the truth either. I have no clue why anyone would think the government is benevolent. THe wisest words ever uttered was the scariest words you will ever hear are We are the Government and we're here to help you!

What does a firehouse tour for young kids have to do with "fearing" Gov't? These aren't Hitler's youth camps!
I don't want kids that young exposed to that kind of thing. That's for grownups to deal with. Kids should be able to be kids, without watching over their shoulders all the time. I can separate what's good and fun for kids without turning off my adult awareness of the world around me. What a benevolent Gov't has to do with a local kid's day camp....huh? "destract me from the truth?" That's a weird statement. What has any of this got to do with anything?
Should you or Mr/Ross be standing at the side of that water slide and saying to the parents,"You know every time your child slides down this, you're being used as a Gov't pawn? Whoa! not in from of my child you woukdn't...Ya might end up with a knot on your head!
You say you can't understand why I don't see what's happening.I most certainly do, I just don't lay it out publically. I'm not going to let any of that pollute the kid's fun and summer learning either.

You don't get it. The fireman hats weren't jus free hats they were and are cheap advertisement. They are paid for possibly grants or at minimum from premiume charged by the insurance comppanies. No freebies. They are also tax write offs. No freebies.
But what about the things you don't see and don't know about.
I am so frightened that I am going out and lift all the peony leaves and see if there are any government agents hiding under them.
OMG, NO, Wilma!!!!!!!!!! At least take the aluminum baseball bat, the can of mace and a tazer with you...No such thing as being too careful, you know... ;D
QuoteI am so frightened that I am going out and lift all the peony leaves and see if there are any government agents hiding under them.
now now now, Wilma.
1. It's too hot for the agents to spy on an elderly lady...but, you know...you may fit the PROFILE of an unorthodox terroist! :'(
2. While you're frantically searching the peony leaves, check your electrical box.....it may have been shut off due to no one was home, and they thought you would appreciate the lower electrice bill. Or, in fact it was malfunctioned.
3. While you start up your AC (because they shut it off), you blow the condenser, and have to call the Electric company.
4. They replace your part, charge you an arm and a leg and they were under the peony leaves all the time.
Solution: Decide which is more inportant....peonies, or AC
<<<sighs......as serious as this might be in the future, I had to play it out...
ready
Ross, my fire company has a fire safety budget that we use to pay for educational supplies and fun stuff like the hats. No grants, fund drives and fund raising activities. I just did finish writing the fall fund drive that goes out about Sept.15. Tax write offs? For whom?. We're a 501(c) 3 as it is. I guess I don't know what you mean by "free" either. If my fire company comes to your house and puts out your fire, you don't get a bill from us. Your fire insurance is between you and them. The fact that we exist and with the equipment we have means our residents get a break on their fire insurance because of our good ISO rating. Cheap advertizing? What does that mean anyway? Why would we need to advertize? Who you get depends on where you live. What are you going to do...call some other fire company? Actually that's pretty funny. Wanna see your taxes go up? We close and go all paid.
LOL...Ready, you're a hoot!!!!!
You know, I know that Big Brother (and no, Ross, not the TV show...Stay with me here) has the ability to monitor us in a myriad of ways, all of which I find repugnant and intrusive. However, that having been said...Are any of us going to quit living our normal life? NO. Are any of us going to start sweeping our houses for "bugs"? Other than Patriot, Ross, Red and Steve, I sincerely doubt there's any of us who are that interesting to Big Brother. We all live out the little details of our lives in comparitive safety and solitude. If y'all are really all that neurotic about this, then don't buy smart phones, don't have TV top cable boxes and don't, for God's sake (and the sake of the rest of us!), DON'T UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES take advantage of any of the other modern conveniences that make our mundane lives just a little easier, happier or more comfortable. Retreat to your survivalist caves, loaded with at least 18 months of MREs, bottled water and cynide tablets (you know, just for in the event you're taken captive and can't manage to escape by the hair of your chinny-chin-chin).
Why can't we be both:
1. This side on the cautious and prepare within reason. 1 year, not 3. Like canning, stocking up on supplies.
2. Life Life to it's fullest.
Unfortunately, most take things that are real to the extreme.
There is a fine line between cautious and paranoia.
But, "I am only a Doctor, Jim....not a Psychologist!" <<<<<<<<in my best Bones voice.

I agree, Ready. Your point is well stated, clear and mature. Now...I wonder how the fringe element is going to refute this bit of mature advice?
Thank you Cat, but I do have to interject:
My Uncle did work with the IBM's in California back in the 60's. Steve is not that far off in the technology side.
And, with the 'possible let's see what the American people are actually doing' and I use that term without proof,
the technology is available.
Just like booze, the computers are. It all depends on how it is used/abused.

I agree. There are way too many avenues that exist for the Gov't to gain access to you and your information. Heck...With the gps capability of the smart phones, you can track where your kiddos are...OK...I'm trying to find a downside to that one...But, the fact remains that you do need to be aware of what means exist for you to be monitored. However, if you're living a normal life and aren't doing anything worth monitoring, what do you have to fear? My life is dull in the extreme...And I defy any Big Bro to try to monitor me while I'm in my classroom...LOL...Go for it!!!!! I'd love to see the reaction on their part to all of the mundane aspects of my life!!!!!!!!!!!!!! lol

Yet, they could (or the Administrators could) and if you so much as make a mistake or be so mundane that you aren't effective in the classroom, there goes your job or perhaps the funding that comes with it!
Catch-22
Nah, this isn't a debate. There are indeed two sides to this...The one more nefarious and the one where you just have to shake your head and get on with life. I guess I'm like you in that respect...I can flip-flop with the best of them. I am the variety who believes that all we can do is our best, regardless, so just get on with it and do so.
Actually, it's been fun to talk to you, Ready... ;D...No debate about it!! lol
Actually, Ready, I'm already monitored by all of the teachers I work with, my principal and my parents. That's just the nature of teaching...It comes with the territory. And if I screw up, it's my butt that's in the sling. Yes, I could lose my job. But, I'll be blunt...I expect to be held to that high standard. I'm more than capable of not only meeting that standard but exceeding it and do so on a daily basis. The performance of my students each year speaks for itself.
Men who stare at goats. Or is it goats who stare at Steve?
A couple of days ago, someone posted that I made no sense and was perhaps drinking.
My response to the California trial basis for the Smart Meters was this:
Comapnies via Salemen will try to sell you something...and will prey on people's open trust of everyone. Ergo Kansans. We are proud to be who we are, despite a few 'bad apples' that make the news.
Or as some called us, "Dumb Hicks"
If the Smart Meters will do what they are purposed to do: to save money, then okay. But not at my expense of being monitored and controlled by a company on the West/East Coast.
I dont need Micro-managing!
And, if you check out the reasoning behind it, you may never find it. Companies say they are in our best interest...I don't always think so.
QuoteMen who stare at goats. Or is it goats who stare at Steve?
Ummm...wrong topic? :o
I had an opportunity offered to me to have one of the remotely controlled thermostats installed and I flatly refused it. No one, and I mean NO ONE, is going to tell me when I can and can't run my AC. My bills are always paid in full and I have the right to a cool home in 111 degree heat! The only "best interest" they are serving might be the ability of the larger grid areas to have rolling blackouts so that the generating stations don't get overloaded. The only places I know of, where that would be absolutely necessary, are where the mega-cities are...Where I live, there shouldn't be a need for rolling blackouts.
It's not a matter of pranoia
it is a matter of awareness.
Just like the people having their credit card information stolen by theives
while you are typing in you information for a transaction.
And that applies to debit cards as well.
If you are unaware then you are an easy mark.
just like the schemes of having thousands of dollars needing transfered from over seas to your account for free.
If you are aware you are safe. Not paranoid.
True....but there would be a cost break to install for the 'more the merrier' syndrome.
Heck, mine will stop with a good lightening storm if I don't shut it off before it hits.
I would think the Electric companies would fix the stupid lines that are 50 years old and twitch at the first raindrop before selling us a Grid package!
If you aren't familiar with this ready, the military did a study with goats and mind control.
So you swipe the Dillons card and they know everything you bought and send you coupons for those items to get you back in the store. Simply smart marketing. Same with I-Tunes and on and on. No government control. Only monitoring your buying habits.

That exists today with the Smart Phones and 'checking for prices" that will send info. It happens with 'cookies' and surfing habits. That's why when I sign up for something just to get one thing...even though it's under a safe, and different email addy, I get all sorts of spam to that address.
It is a marketing issue, and I resent my identity being one of those statistics.
Sorry about the remark about the goats, I thought you were dissin' Steve.

I would think the Electric companies would fix the stupid lines that are 50 years old and twitch at the first raindrop before selling us a Grid package!
Then you would complain about a rate increase. Read the latest article in the Eagle about proposed work on the grid. You're lucky to have the service you have , and the rates. Ask Diane what her cost per KWH is .
You can limit the info you provide, hell I give them Ross's phone number,(just kidding). Just be aware what they use it for and mess with them in return. They don't know if it's accurate.
No I wouldn't complain about an increase in the kw. I would adjust my usage, and not be so pampered to have it at 78 all day in 100+ weather, which btw is the first time in my life I can say that I can.
Make me pay more for adequate services, and I will adjust as to my needs.
Tell me that I am exceeding the normal limits, and I will tell you to ......sorry David, can't write it, however if you wish to pay my electric bill, then I will do as I see comfortable! ;D
Dagn it, is MrsC2u rubbing off? :P
ready and cool
LOL ;D ;D ;D
One thing they will be doing, and the substation for Enel will help do, is create loops so they can reroute power around damaged lines so no long duration outages. You are certainly an exception for knowing it takes money to upgrade and not complaining .
Thank you Jefe. I consider myself a very conservative user of electricty (notice I specified)
It's not about the kw charge...it's about the other surcharges that are tacked onto. in otherwords, I just check my last bill:
Should have been $38 but it was $59 due to the other stuff!

Thank you. That being said, at what cost of other things?
Give two and recieve 4 and then take away 3 doesn't set well in my books.
No facts, just suposition to a saleman.
ready and cautious,.....and sleepy
Give two, get four, take away three has been the way it has been for some time now. I am shocked at how much EVERYTHING is going up...Not just electricity. I have been forced to become rather creative when it comes to keeping my household afloat anymore!
Quotekeeping my household afloat anymore
Buy a houseboat and you're all set!!! ;D
Lights out for me, to conserve energy!

Ah, yes. She has been monitored - by some very picky parents and is remembered and well-loved by former students.
She holds herself to a high standard, and has expected the same from her students. As a result, they live up to her expectations. Don't know about her current students, but in the past she's had some doozies. :D
I never, ever had doozies, Debbie...All of my children were fabulous, interesting, possibly somewhat involved but always loved individuals...And I thank God every day that I am allowed to be part of guiding them to their destinies. My years in Elk County were years that I count as being some of the best of my life...And meeting you your hubby and Jamie ranked right at the top! :D

The feeling is mutual, you know! ;)
