Just got back from Howard a few minutes ago. When I was down there I noticed there were several guys on top of the court house reroofing the building. I wish I had taken my camera with me. It would have been a good picture, or two or three. If anybody gets a chance, I would love them to post a picture on here of the event, as it is part of Elk County's history.
Same kind as was already there?
There was red tile on the roof before, and it looked to me like the new shingles were made of brick-red colored metal, but styled similar to the old tile. Can't say for sure, though.
As far as I can tell, the construction company is putting back the same kind of roof tile that was on there. It appeared to me that they took all the tiles off, put down tar paper or something like that, then put the brick tile back. The courthouse is on the historical list or at least I think it is. I have driven by a couple of times, but I never had my camera either. I will try to see what is going on Monday and if I can, I will try to take some pictures. They are doing all of this repair to try and keep the roof from leaking. This has been an ongoing problem for probably the last 10 years. I hope what they are doing will eliminate the leaking, so the courthouse can be preserved as long as possible.
I was taking pictures of the shorn trees, and have this one of the courthouse - this is on Randolph, so it's the south side.
I think they have the tile laid out getting ready to start laying it.
I had business at the courthouse this morning so while I was there I took these pictures. The courthouse east was taken from in front of the sheriff's office, over it's roof.
Good job, Mother. I didn't see very many people on the roof. Do you think it was too windy today?
They were there when we got there, but by the time we took care of business and got back outside, most of them were down. It wasn't windy when we were there.
Very good pictures. Thank you Wilma.
The company involved is the Mid-Continental Restoration of Fort Scott, Kansas, but no one was working until Monday.

Those are very good pictures, Waldo. So detailed and clear. I wonder from whence you took them.
It would be nice if come next Spring, landscaping was added. Benches and tables for the staff and community. Bushes flowers and a few small trees.
Wilma,
I took them from the north side on Washington Street using a telephoto lens for the roof. Later I discovered there might have been some better takes on the south side but did not have my camera with me at the time.
I should have asked Neva about the cost. I am wondering if the Kansas State Historical Society is picking up the entire cost. I kind of doubt it, which means some of it is probably being paid with the loan from the Longton Bank.
This is a cut and paste from a South Central Kansas Economic Development District web site and does not say much. The info is from September 2010.
*Elk County Heritage Trust Fund Award for Courthouse Repairs – SHPO has approved change in project scope due to the considerably high project bids. Commission had recommended rebidding project even though SHPO indicated we could negotiate with the low bidder. This is being reconsidered in light of the recent storms and the anticipated unavailability of roofing contractors.
Here is another item that does not say much:
-Elk County Rural Water District #2 – Construction is underway, Draw of construction funds complete. KDOC has scheduled their on-site monitoring for October 21st. Final draw down of funds and close-out anticipated for January/February 2011 pending completion of construction.
And a third item:

A KSHS web site says that KSHS Heritage Trust Fund preservation grants for buildings on the National Register of Historic Places cannot exceed $90,000 and must be matched by the grant recipient.
So far, I have not found any specifics on the project.
