Basketball is over. What do we do now?
Help me root for the Flyers! The Blackhawks won last night but it could have gone either way.
OK. What are they?
Good looking young men, mostly with no front teeth, who whack little flat rubber disks all over the ice rink with long sticks and spend a good bit of the time beating up on each other. ;D ;D ;D The Philadelphia Flyers hockey team is playing the Chicago Blackhawks for the national Championship and the Stanley Cup. Several more games yet to go. It's a really big deal here.
Excuse me----------------Basketball over? I'm sorry, but I think there is a final series to go through, although it is a mere formality that the Lakers have to put up with before they give the trophy to them.
Larryj
The Lakers play basketball?
uh,oh....rough waters ahead. ;D ;D ;D
Wilma, I am trying extremely hard not to say something that is insulting, degradating, mean or otherwise spiteful because of our family relationship, although by marriage. My momma allus said, "if you can't say something nice, then say what you really think." At least, I think that is what she said. Anyway, I am sure you will watch the Lakers even if you don't care for them, because you will want to harass me if they lose. I know how you are.
Larryj
Oh, the Lakers. That bunch of big, tall men that were on the floor while the Suns were playing basketball. One of them got quite good at three pointers, didn't he. Do you think he will get to play again?
Sure, I will be watching. What else is there to watch. Besides if the Lakers can beat the Suns, they can beat anyone.
QuoteBesides if the Lakers can beat the Suns, they can beat anyone.
Celtics aren't just anyone, though. :)
Aha, a Boston fan, perhaps?
Aaawwwww nooooooo! Mom70x7-------------another relative against my beloved Lakers. I feel so betrayed!
Larryj
P.S. Mom70x7-----check out an article I found today while cleaning out a box of old papers. It should bring back memories. I am posting it in the good old days.
Larryj
Tsk, tsk. Not against the Lakers, just for the Celtics. ;)
??? ??? ??? My momma allus sed, "youse either fer or agin" or something like that. (That ought to drive my spellchecker nuts.)
Larryj
The Celtics have my vote--at least one KU alum (Paul Pierce) and an OSU alum (Tony Allen). I admire the talent of the Lakers, but just can't stomach Kobe Bryant, no matter how good he is. I do like the tall player on the Lakers (I think from France??).
Awwwww nnoooooo! Not you too. Well, I will just accept that because of the recent kindness shown. And, Pao is from Spain.
Larryj
Quoteyouse either fer or agin
Well, then, put me down as "fer" the Celtics.
And the Lakers - who cares! ;D ;D ;D
OK, Larry, when the Suns aren't playing I can be for anyone I want to be for, so I will help you cheer the Lakers on. After all, they have to be good. They beat the Suns.
Thank you, Wilma, I knew your heart was in the right place.
Larryj
Tonight's the night. ARE YOU READY?
Diane, how are the ice skaters doing?
Two to one, Black Hawks. The Flyers squeaked out an overtime win last night. Next game here tomorrow night.
Game's not over, but it sure is looking like a Laker night. :'(
:D :D :D
Wilma, ice skaters? Really?? HaHaHa!
IS THAT IT? IS THAT ALL THEY GOT? WERE THEY THERE? ::)
Ho Hum...............Oh well, one down, three to go. Get out the brooms or is it too early. ;)
Larryj
Now don't go getting prepared for a SWEEP!!!!!! There is hope for the Celtics (but not if they play ike they did last night.........). Alas, the Lakers looked awfully good.......
When two mis-matched players meet, doesn't the superior player usually "spot you one"?
:D :D :D :D :D
(Now, you've got to understand, I'm not normally a basketball fan - I prefer football and baseball. The Celtics, though, are one of my favorite basketball teams; I have several.)
Well, you know what they say------------------"all's fair in love and war" not so in basketball. Besides, I am still getting over the stupid decision by the Baseball Commissioner not to reverse the ump's bad call in that game yesterday.
Larryj
I am, too. I would like to see it again. It was really close. I am not so sure that the pitcher had his foot down when the runner touched the base, BUT-----------, the umpire says he was wrong and that should be good enough for anyone, including the commissioner.
When do the skaters play again?
The skaters go at it again tonight. In philly.
I was going to watch the game, then found that it is showing on a channel that I don't get. I will catch the score later.
Okay. I have read these postings and have to put in who I am rooting for. I am all over those Celtics. Paul Pierce is one of my boys from KU. I have watched him play and just can't take my eyes off the Celtics for the win. I hope I'm not wrong.
It is 9:15 here and the Lakers are behind. 4th quarter just started. What are the rest of you doing? Philadelphia is also behind.
Chicago wins. Series 3-2.
Boston wins. Series 1-1. Boston had to win one to keep the series interesting.
QuoteIt is 9:15 here and the Lakers are behind. 4th quarter just started. What are the rest of you doing?
The game is over, Celtics won, and I'm contented.
:D :D :D
I think the Flyers forgot to show up....very bad game. Now back to Chicago, but I think it's over.
And the Stanley Cup goes to-----------Chicago. I think it was a good game. It went to overtime.
Back to the good game tomorrow night. Can the Lakers do it again or will the Celtics make a comeback?
The Celtics survived and are making this an interesting playoff championship! That's the way it should be this time of year--the two best teams fighting it out! Sunday night's game will be very interesting as the competition is now tied.
I did get to see a piece of the last Flyers game. It took overtime to do it, but Chicago well earned the Stanley Cup.
What about those Celtics? Huh? Huh? Huh?
yup! ;)
Big Night in LA tonight!!!!! Keep up the momentum, Celtics!!!!
This will be the night. Onward, Lakers!
Ok, I'll be for the Lakers in the first half and the Celtics ( even thought they pronounce it wrong. ;D) in the second half. Is that moderate enough?
Thursday night will tell it all for the NBA..........................
Mother, I can't believe that you are rooting for the Lakers. With my own Paul Pierce playing for the Celtics. A little KU boy. No, no, no. Not the Lakers. Celtics all the way.
That was just to help Larry. He couldn't do it all on his own, but what really helped was when Diane threw in with us.
Ladies, your support is certainly appreciated. I have been restraining----------------------no, biting my tongue-------------no, trying to be nice, until the last game is played. You have to remember as my wife and I discussed last night-------the money.
Staples Center has 18000+ seats. The average cheap seat goes for about $100. The premium seats goes for a whole lot more. Just the ticket sales alone could top $3 million. Then there are the concessions. How many of these people are going to buy something, say, at about an average of $20 to $30 a visit? Television pays a ton of money to broadcast these games. AND, then there's the ads. While not as expensive as the Super Bowl ads, they are still pretty expensive.
So, it behooves the owners of both teams to drag this out to the entire seven games. And, I am fairly sure that some of those star players who can and do score 20 or 30 points each game, all of a sudden can't make a shot. Do you think the owners/shareholders might be telling the coaches how to play or not play the game? Do I sound a little disgruntled? Nah, but you have to look at the facts. Still, watching is still a great time.
Larryj
For sure, Lakers it is! Rah! :D
You know, Larry, I have always thought the owners wanted all 7 games played. It makes one wonder, just like you said, when good players can't seem to make any shots and play like the Celtics played Tuesday. They were really bad and seemed to be just going all over the place like they couldn't control themselves. I didn't watch the entire game, just the second half, but I have seen high school boys play better then the Celtics did Tuesday night. LOL
It was a pathetic game from the beginning to the end...............
This was in my paper today and I thought I might add it here. It is written by Frank Girardot, senior metro editor of the San Gabriel Valley Newsgroup, and I thought, kinda funny.
Titled: THE EMILY POST GUIDE TO WATCHING THE NBA FINALS
If you are getting together tonight with friends, relatives or barroom acquaintances to revel in Game 7 of the NBA Finals, heed the warnings of etiquette maven, Emily Post.
It became clear to me after a couple of games of the Laker-Celtics series that a review of Post's musings was in order.
The first sign of the decline of good manners appeared to me during Game 3.
I was charged with picking up 18 pizzas for the crew working election night. Waiting patiently for my order, I noticed the joint was filled to capacity with some of the scariest characters I've seen outside of handcuffs in the back seat of the local police car.
Fashion advice guys: Just because you've got a shaved head and tattoos on your neck doesn't mean you're qualified to wear an official NBA jersey.
The point was driven home again Tuesday night at El Torito in West Covina during Game 6. If the gangsters weren't there -- the wannabes were.
Fashion advice girls: If you're over 30 and still wearing short-shorts, at least have the common decency to lose some weight. The rest of you are making a life-changing mistake with the stupid tattoos. Enough already.
Mrs. Post probably never dreamed of these modern-day dilemmas.
Then again, it was 1922 when Post wrote the now-famous "Etiquette." The book, then published by Funk and Wagnalls, covered a variety of topics -- even if tattoos and knock-off jerseys weren't included.
"Etiquette" had notable chapters including "On the Street and in Public;" "At Public Gatherings;" "The House Party;" and "Games and Sports."
Much of this advice remains applicable today. For example, if you are sitting in the bar at El Torito with friends and have to pass between the TV and the table when Kobe is at the free throw line, Post offered this nugget;
"If you are obliged to cross in front of someone -- say 'Thank you' or 'Thank you very much' or 'I am very sorry,'" Post wrote. "Do not say 'Pardon me' or 'Beg pardon.' Beg pardon, which is an abbreviation, is one of the phrases never said in best society."
As for the inevitable mad dash to the pizza parlor's restroom during a commercial, Post urged gentlemen to always take a seat at the end of the table -- before the urge hits.
"There are no greater theater pests than those who come back after the curtain has gone up and temporarily snuff out the view of everyone behind as well as annoy those who are to stand up and let them by."
The thing about Game 7 -- be it basketball or baseball -- someone''s going to lose. Post also offered up advice to those degenerate boors who will insist on parlaying the Celtics +6 to the unders and buying too many squares in the $5 office pool.
"The good loser makes it an invariable rule never to play for stakes that it will be inconvenient to lose," Post wrote. "The neglect of this rule has been responsible for more bad losers than anything else."
In so many words Post goes on to say that a bad loser is as welcome as a BP exec at a crawdad boil on the Louisiana bayou.
Anyway, between now and that party tonight, you might want to check out ol' Emily's advice.
After all, "People who ridicule etiquette --- seem to forget the long slow progress of social intercourse in the upward climb of man," Post wrote. "(Conventions) are the rules of the game of life and must be followed if we would play the game."
Or watch it.

In a followup to an earlier post about the money, I heard today that the "nose bleed" seats for game seven are going for an average of $500 each and the premier luxury boxes are going for $50,000 each. Remember 18,000+ seats. Do the math and tell me that the owners and shareholders don't manipulate the series into a full seven games. Now, that said, this is the fourth seven-games series in the last 25 years. Go figure.
Larryj
Why, oh why, do they pick people like Christina Aguilera to sing the National Anthem? I mean, don't they do sound checks? Isn't there someone who listens and says "No, you have to sing it like its supposed to be sung." Why does the song have to be massacred like that? What a slap in the face! AND, you could tell by the way she was looking up at the center court screens that she was reading the words off the screen. Sheeesh.
Larryj
I'm glad I missed that one. I heard Martina McBride sing it once and she sang it true. Comes from Kansas, she does.
The last time I looked, the Lakers were behind. Is this the way it is going to end?
About one minute to play and the Celtics are throwing this game away. You didn't miss a thing by not hearing the National Athem being sung by Christina Aguilera . It was plumb awful.
Well, there it is. Lakers are champions once again, and I thank those of you who supported them. The Celtics played a good game, but it just turned out to be the Laker's night.
Larryj
SEE! I told you that if the Lakers could beat the Suns, they could beat anyone. Told you so.
How is the USA doing in the World Cup? I don't know enough about soccer to figure it out.
I do know some about golf and Tiger isn't doing so good.
I think the USA tied today's game in the World Cup Soccer match. I have no idea how that puts them in the standings...........
Congrats to the Lakers who stood their ground last night. They deserved to win. We're looking forward to next year's season with the OKC Thunder as they become a little older and a bit of a stronger team.
