Max Mayo Vaughan, age 92, of Cedar Vale, Kansas, passed away Wednesday, February 20,2010 at the Pleasant Valley Manor in Sedan, Kansas.  He was born May 8, 1917 in rural Chautauqua County, Kansas to Willie H. and Jewel (Appleby) Vaughan.  He was educated in Pleasant Hill schoolhouse and Grenola High School.  He graduated from Cedar Vale High School in 1937 and attended one year at Cowley County Community College in Arkansas City, Kansas.

He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps from 1942 to 1946 during World War II as a radar technician.  He married Dorothy Shrope on March 19, 1959 in Tijuana, Mexico. 

He is survived by his wife, Dorothy Vaughan of the home in Cedar Vale, Kansas; one stepdaughter, Dorothy Hall of Cedar Vale, Kansas; two brothers, Victor and his wife Virginia of Wichita, Kansas and Willie V. Jr. and his wife Elizabeth of Winfield, Kansas; 5 step-grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, and 3 great-great grandchildren; 17 nieces and nephews, 24+ great nieces and nephews, and 16+ great-great nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one infant brother, Vance Leon; a half-brother, Haldean; brothers Wayne and Jay; a sister, Jean Pack; and one stepson, James Shrope.

Family and friends may call from 12:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. on Sunday, February 14, 2010 at David W. Barnes Funeral Home in Sedan, Kansas with family greeting friends from 2:00 to 3:00 p.m.  Funeral services will be held Monday, February 15, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. at the Grenola United Methodist Church with Chaplain Larry Womacks officiating.  Burial will follow at Greenlawn Cemetery in Grenola, Kansas. 

The family has suggested memorials to the Grenola United Methodist Church, Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice; or the church of the donor's choice and may be left in care of David W. Barnes Funeral Home, 209 N. Douglas, Sedan, KS 67361.
