New Scam?

I just had a phone call that claimed to be with Wells Fargo.  They gave me the name of someone and said that this person had put me down as a reference.  After making the caller repeat the information several times to be sure I had it right, I told her that I DID NOT KNOW A PERSON BY THAT NAME.  Has anyone else had this kind of phone call?  Is this maybe a new kind of scam?  The caller didn't ask for any personal information, just said that they would make a note of the fact that I didn't know the person.

I keep reading about all kinds of scams, but haven't heard about this one.
