Roma Jean Turner

Nancy E. DeWitt was born in Monroe County, Kentucky, August 31, 1855.  Her family moved to Illinois when she was nine years old.  She came with her parents to Kansas in 1871, settling on a farm near Howard.  She was married in 1875 to Joseph H. Turner.  They made their home in and near Howard ,and there their three sons were born.
    In 1893, the family moved to Moline, Kansas and has ever since been identified with the life of the town.
    Mrs. Turner was the daughter of Henry DeWitt, an early days preacher of the Christian Church, and to the end of her life was a devoted worker for Christianity keeping the faith and supporting this cause and most loyally.  So long as heal and strength permitted, she was nearly always in attendance at the services of the church and all its activities.  Mrs. Turner was particularly interested in foreign missions and had a wide acquaintance with those active in this field.  She was a life member of the C.W. B.M.
    Also, she was a charter member of the Howard Rebekah Lodge, transferring her membership to the Moline lodge when she became a resident here, and remaining a member so long as she lived.
    Joseph H. Turner, her husband, died in the year 1900, and she remained a widow for more than thirty years, living for several years just past with her son, John.  She died at Moline, Kansas on March 18, 1934, leaving to mourn her loss three sons, George H. and John W. of Moline and Herbert E. of Howard, five grandchildren, one great grandchild and many dear friends.
    Funeral services were held at the Christian church Tuesday afternoon conducted by Rev. Signey Hawkins, the pastor, assisted by Mrs. Belle Reid Yates of Grenola, and interment was made in the Moline Cemetery.
    Relatives of Mrs Turner from a distance attending the funeral were:  Mrs M. A. Lynch of St. Paul, Kansas and her two daughters, Mrs Ed Bauer and Mrs Clara Every of Parsons, Kansas;  also Mr Bauer; a niece Mrs C. B. James and husband of Hillsdale, Oklahoma; and a nephew, F. L. DeWitt and wife of Pond Creek, Oklahoma.
