WEST ELK EVENS SEASON RECORD WITH VICTORY AT CHASE COUNTY

COTTONWOOD FALLS - Trailing by a touchdown after one quarter of play, the West Elk High School football team responsded and rolled on to a 36-8 victory over Chase County in a Lyon County League contest Friday night.
  The Patriots have now won three of their last four games to move back to the .500mark at 303 overall.  West Elk - which opens Class 2-1A-District 6 action Friday at hme against Sedan - actually moved into sole possession of second place in the LCL standings at 2-1 after Lyndon suffered a 34-6 loss to Olpe.
  "Chase County had the momentum after that touchdown, and it was their homecoming." said West Elk football coach Chris Haag.  "Our defense really responded.  We had a strong passing attack, and the oine did a good job of protecting.  I think we're playing some of our best football right now.  We just have to continue to rise to the occasion."
  Chase County jumped ahead in the opening quarter as quarterback Ross Eidman tossed a 30-yard touchdown pass to Jason Robison.  Brian Palermo ran in the two-point conversion to give the Bulldogs an 8-0 lead.
  West Elk trailed by that same margin after one quarter but finally kicked things into gear.  With the help of a strong defenseive effort, the Patriots got things going offensively as well, starting with a 32-yard TD pass from quarterback C. J. Madison to Brett Koop, who also ran in the conversion to tie the score at 8-8.
  Moments later, Madison gave the Patriots the lead on a two-yard run, and he later tossed his second TD pass of the night - thes time to Blair Lowe from 31 yards out.  Colby Linder added the conversion run for a 22-8 West Elk lead at the intermission.
  WEHS put the game away inthe second half.  Linder ran into the end zone from five yards out, followed by a conversion run from Koop, and Lowe had a 54-yard scamper for six in the fourth quarter for the final tally.
  West Elk finished the contest with a balanced offenseive attach that resulted in 398 total yards - 213 through the air and 185 on the ground.  Madison completed 14- of 23 passes, with Koop leading all receivers with six catches for 107 yards.
