Math relays.....West Elk continues dominance!!!!

Did anyone notice the results of the math contest out at the old building of indoctrination?  There  were a bunch of kids doing arithmetic.  The parking lot was full of all these out of county buses from other school of indoctrination.  They were all here to arithmetic together.  The results were quite enjoyable unless that is if you had a long school bus ride back to home.

This is not part of a nationally mandated federally funded no math left behind school subject.  This is an after hours above and beyond the demands of the regular classroom activity that area schools do for the pure cerebral stimulus.

Congratulations to all the super achievers that conquered yet another contest.  How many years of being undefeated in a event does it take to be noticed?  I know for a challenge next time we should take all the tests left handed(opposite hand for you pc police).  That will make it a much leveler playing field.

We are delighted to hear of the successes of the Math students. It is also nice to be able to host these events and show pride in sharing the WE facilities.  The entire district should be proud of these students' achievements, plus appreciative of the sponsors who spend their "off hours" coordinating and encouraging.  These activities build confidence and pride among the students and also help prepare them for competing in all phases of their educational futures.  Great Job, West Elk!!!!!

Kind of ironic, as I was following the thread on home schooling one of the first things that popped into my mind was that very few parents were capable,qualified or knwowlegable enough to home school their kids in Math and the Sciences.  On that subject I also noted that not one person that was advocating home schooling and that was putting down the "Government Controlled" or "Public" schooling attended the Howard School system. My memories of my 12 years in the Howard school system are really great, warm memories of super teachers, good friends and lots of comaradery. Howard had absolutely super teachers,  1st grade, Crystal Finley and Hazel Moore, 2nd, Margaret Gragg, 3rd Agnes Miller, 4th, Louise Clubine and Emaline Leonard, 5th Winifred Van Buskirk, 6th, Veda Staley, High School, English Lillian Erickson and Helen Vinette, Math and Sciemces, Richard Schmidt and Louis Fuerstch, the list goes on and on all were good teachers and all took a personal interest in each and every student. My education in the Howard schools and the confidence the teachers, family and friends gave me, enabled me to go on and finish my College Degree, get some hours towards my Masters and above all they gave me the confidence that I could accomplish anything I wanted to work hard enough to do so.
Howard was agreat place to go to school, live and growup in. I have stayed in touch with many of my teachers over the years and also I have stayed in touch with many of my classmates and schoolmates, that have remained life long friends.
I think kids that are homeschooled miss out on the friends, the interaction with other students and the teaching from good teachers that care.

I'm happy that you have such fond childhood memories.  I really am.  But if you want a "progressive" community, town, county, then you (and talking to a lot of the people in this county that don't care too much for outsiders) are going to have to live with people coming in from other areas with ideas foreign from your own, especially those that come from larger cities whose ideas are usually vastly different.........like Steve.

Congrats to those" well indoctrinated" math students. Some icky socialist math teacher and some super impressionable kids must have done a great job. Some may put it down, but I for one will raise my class of milk in a toast to a job very well done.
