No excitement for me but got a phone call from my ol Lt (Scar ) from Nam. He lives--or did--in Bloomsburg, Pa. Last he knew he had two feet of water in his house and knows it's deeper by now and not supposed to crest until some time tomorrow. A few houses in his area were swept plumb away. He said his house will probably be torn down because he's sure it won't be worth fixing---if it survives. The worst flood they have ever had.

Aw, I know right were he is.  I hope he's alright.
It's terrible, especially the rivers around Philly and west. Everything is so saturated that all the water runs right off and it didn't take much to bring everything up to and above flood stage again. The Susquehanna and anywhere around the Wilkes Barre areas is in real trouble. We've had another 5 inches in our rain gauge and they were much worse, maybe 11 or 12 on top of what we've had since Labor Day, which was already on top of a recent 10 inch total from Irene. Record breakers everywhere. A lot worse that "just a little rain."

They've started evacuating Port Deposit that sits below the big Conowingo dam in nearby Maryland, pulling in Delaware fire companies to help. They keep opening more and more gates and when that happens more water pours to little ancient Port Deposit that sits one street wide between the Susquehanna and a bluff that rises straight up behind the houses that cling to the side of the hill.
There are 53 gates and they may have to open 50 of them by tomorrow afternoon to keep the dam from being over topped. We were going to go take a look (40 min.) but they've wisely closed the road over the dam. That's where we can go watch so many eagles. This is the worst since Agnes in 1972. It's actually stopped raining here finally, but don't know if it will last.

They've cancelled the George Jones Concert that was to be on Saturday...Imagine that.

HELP!  I'm talking and I can't shut up!

I came...  I saw...  I had NO idea what was going on...

And we are still praying for rain.  It has finally cooled off, 90's in the daytime and 60's at night.  The wind has finally stopped and that has helped them to get a little bit of a hand on the fires.  Still have several subdivisions west of Conroe evacuted and lots of smoke and haze over Houston.  They finally got some air support to put fire retardant and dump water, there is a lot of forest there and we had to wait until the got the fire by Dallas under control before we could get planes and helicopters.

We may get some rain from Maria if it follows the path they are predicting.  That would be great but will probably get wind ahead of the rain.  I hope for everyone here and in the Northeast to stay safe.

I heard that on the news tonight. How sad for those people. And here we are crying for a little rain to fill ponds, lakes, rivers, etc. then the fires in Texas. Things are just crazy in this world now. Will pray that your "ol Lt" stays safe.

Hey Jar, same here from me, hope ol' Lt. comes out ok.  Gotta soft spot in my heart for the guys that served in the 60's.  I think we all died a little in that damn war.
CAUTION: if instrument is shaken sufficiently to cause arm to swing violently, damage may occur!

Thank y'all for your concern about my ol Lt.. Scar will be OK, he is a survivor . The man was wounded for every day of the week, as we like to tease him, (hence the nickname Scar ) so if them OL NVA couldn't do him in I doubt a little flooding will get the best of him.

Meanwhile, "back at the farm!"  Just thought I'd mention what happened out here last evening.  Apparently "an employee" of SDG&E made some kind of an "error" yesterday, in Arizona, on the San Diego Gas & Electric's power line, and the electricity went off, for SDG&E's 1.3 million customers in San Diego County, northern Baja, Orange County and into the border of other states, affecting 5 million people.  So, everything was shut down.  San Diego has probably 3 million people living in the city, and with all of the other areas, it's a lot of people.  What a mess.  Can you imagine the traffic, with no traffic signals?  We were happy to just be home.  Candles & flashlights and a radio with batteries got us through the evening.  Our daughter and son-in-law came on over to our house for the evening.  They live in a "gated" area and someone had to get what it took to open the gate manually, so they came here, we played cards, ate supper and we were all listening to the radio about what all was going on.  They went on home later in the evening.

Anyway, the electricity came back on in stages, ours came on around 2:30 a.m., Cathy & Harvey's came on around 4:00 a.m.  The SDG&E employees are to commended, plants were shut down everywhere, and now, enough are back up to supply all of us with electricity.  Flights are resuming at the airport in San Diego, etc., etc.  What a blessing!
Bonnie
