Thomas Eugene "Tom" Appleby, age 72, of Sedan, Kansas,  passed away Sunday morning, July 19, 2009 at the Sedan City Hospital in Sedan.

Tom was born May 9, 1937, at the family farm home near Cedar Vale, Kansas. He was the son of Earl Ross Appleby and Laura Belle (Mull) Appleby. He attended school in Cedar Vale and graduated with the senior class of 1955. Upon graduation, he attended Kansas State University, was a member of Farm House Fraternity and received his Bachelor's Degree in Agriculture in 1959.

After graduation he worked for a brief time as a 4-H agent before entering the service in the United States Army. Upon discharge from the Army, he again assumed his career as a County Agriculture Agent as well as pursuing his Master's Degree at Kansas State University, which he completed in 1967.

Tom and Mariellen Jones were married on September 3, 1966, in the Danforth Chapel on the Kansas State University campus. They established their first home at Garnett, Kansas and later moved to their present home outside of Sedan in 1975, where he was a successful cattle rancher until the present. He also worked as the KSU Farm Management Association Fieldman, during part of this period he was also the Vice President of Chisholm Trail State Bank in Sedan for several years. He was also an Extension Agent for Elk County for three years.

He was a member of the Wauneta United Methodist Church, the Kansas and National Livestock Associations, Howard Rotary Club, K-State Alumni Association, a season ticket holder for K-State Basketball for a number of years, and the KSU Extension Service.

Tom is survived by his wife, Mariellen Appleby of the home in Sedan, Kansas; one sister, Mary Louise (Appleby) Jardine and her husband Bob of Bartlesville, Oklahoma; two nephews, Mark Jardine and his wife, Elizabeth of Muskogee, Oklahoma and Scott Jardine and his wife Shauna of Calgary, Canada; five nieces and nephews and numerous cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Marion Lee Appleby.

Cremation has taken place and friends may sign the register book from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Tuesday through Friday, July 21 through July 24, 2009 at the David W. Barnes Funeral Home in Sedan.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 10:30 a.m., Monday, July 27, 2009 at the First United Methodist Church in Sedan with the Reverend Jerry Bever officiating. A private family inurnment will be held at a later date.

The family has suggested memorial contributions to the Chautauqua County 4-H, the Kansas 4-H Foundation, or the Wauneta United Methodist Church and these remembrances may be left in care of David W. Barnes Funeral Home, 209 N. Douglas, Sedan, Kansas 67361.
