  John Wesley Stow was born in Jefferson county, Mo., October 17, 1844.  On July 9th, 1863, he was married to Elizabeth Smith, daughter of Asa G. Smith of Stone county, Mo.  To this union five children were born, four sons and one daughter, four of these are still living.  During the civil war he enlisted as a private in Company "L" of the 2nd Missouri Regiment Artillery.  From this service he was honorably discharged on June 15th, 1865.  In 1872 he was elected Justice of the Peace of Jackson Township, Dallas Co., Mo.  In Oct. 1878 he came to Howard, Kansas.  On March 5th, 1879 he was married to Miss Maggie Dolan, of Elk county Kansas.  To this union three sons were born, of whom one survives.  He engaged in cabinet and carpenter work in Howard, and also served as Justice of the Peace and Notary Public for about eight years.  In 1885 he became one of the charter members of the Howard Presbyterian church, in the membership of which he continued until the end.  The last five years of his life were those of a confimed invalid.  He passed away in the Christian faith Feb. 21, 1911.  The funeral services were held at the family home, Wednesday, Feb. 22nd, at 3 p.m., under the auspicies of the E. M. Stanton Post, No. 23, G.A.F., of which he was a member, conducted by J. E. Deggendorf, pastor of the Presbyterian church.  The interment was in Grace Lawn Cemetery with full military honors.
