Sonny Lee has once again won State Champ in the high jump with a jump of 6 ft. 10 in.  He has qualified for the 400m and the 200m with state records.  This kid is one heck of an athlete.

Thanks, Gina.  I was wondering how WE was doing.

From the Wichita Eagle website:

West Elk's Sonny Lee sets 2A record in 400 prelims @ 9 hours and 41 minutes ago by Joanna

West Elk senior Sonny Lee won the high jump, with a jump of  6 feet, 8 inches on Friday at the state track meet at Cessna Stadium. He then went out and won his heat of the 400 meters in 48.01 seconds, a Class 2A record time.

Lee still has the 200 meter prelims today. If he qualifies, he'll have a chance to match his 2008 state track meet, when he won golds in the high jump, 400 and 200.

As a team, right now West Elk is 7th:

Has anyone heard how Sonny did in his running finals today?  Please post if you know.  Thanks.

Sonny was a student of mine, way back when...I have always been so proud of him.  He's a great combination of athleticism and smarts. :-)

Janet Harrington

Hurrah for our own Sonny Lee.  We should all be proud of him.  I know I am.

Sonny came in 2nd in the 200 and 1st in the 400.

In the 400, he also set a new meet record, breaking one that had stood for 17 years.

Overall, I think West Elk boys were 5th in the state.

Sydney Hines, also from West Elk, placed 7th in her event. (I don't remember what it was).

Nice showing all the way around!

Congratulations to Sonny on his stellar performance.  Five golds and one silver over two years is quite an accomplishment.  Missing that 6th gold by just .03 seconds must be frustrating, but was still a race to be proud of.  In checking overall results in the Wichita Eagle this morning, it looks like his 47.94 was the fastest 400m. time run in all of the classes yesterday.

My apologies to Gina for missing her thread re. the state meet and starting a new one.  Also thanks to whomever combined them.

Rudy Taylor

Fantastic honor for West Elk and Sonny Lee.

We covered the event and there's a good post on taylornewsorg.

It truly is "a wonderful life."
